Windows 11 and TPM 2.0 Explained (How to Enable TPM / PTT on your PC)

  • Windows 11 will require a Trusted Platform Module 2.0 (TPM 2.0) chip in order to install. In this video, I'll explain what TPM is, why it's necessary, and how you can enable it on your PC.
    --

    --
TPM is a way of storing and generating encryption keys in hardware, which is safer than using a software approach because it is harder for malicious software to access. To make their OS more secure, Microsoft has decided to require this functionality on all Windows 11 PCs.
You can tell whether your computer has TPM by opening the Run box and typing “tpm.msc”. If it says that the TPM is ready for use, and the specification version is listed as 2.0, then you’re good!
On the other hand, it might say that a compatible TPM cannot be found. But don’t worry - you might be able to enable TPM functionality on your system, and here’s how.
If your PC was built after the mid-2010s, there’s a good chance that it has TPM functionality, regardless of whether it has a dedicated chip. This is because many CPUs actually include TPM in their firmware! Intel’s trade name for this technique is “Platform Trust Technology”, or PTT, and they started including it with some of their 4th generation Haswell processors in 2013. Most AMD Ryzen chips also include so-called “fTPM” technology.
You can enable these technologies in your BIOS - and in the video, I'll show you how.

On most Asus boards TPM can be enabled like this:
Intel. Advanced>PCH HW configuration and go for PTT and enable firmware TPM.
AMD. Advanced>AMDFtpm>Device selection and enable Firmware TPM.
If applied press F10 and reboot.
To be certain recheck with that Windows tool or type in TPM.msc (which I am certain you only find in Win 10 Pro but I cannot confirm that)
If properly enabled all info can be found there!)

I would like to upgrade my desktop PC to Windows 11 from the current Windows 10. However, I realized that during the Windows 11 setup, it said that my PC doesn't meet the requirements because TPM 2.0 wasn't found. I then went to start>run and TPM couldn't be found. I went into my BIOs, and I couldn't find TPM that you explained in your video under Advanced. I looked everywhere for it. My desktop PC is a custom build gaming PC. Here is what I have:
    AM4 Socket - Motherboard: MSI B350 Tomahawk (MS-7A34) version 1.0
    CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3800X 8-Core Processor 4.25Ghz
GPU: NVidia GeForce RTX 3060 12GB
    Ram: 16GB DDR4
Honestly, I hope that I don't have to buy a new motherboard just to upgrade Windows. If so, I will probably pass on this until I have to. Will method 1 work for me if I buy that chip that I have to install on my motherboard?
Also, is it free to upgrade to Windows 11 from Windows 10?

I was able to enable the fTPM option on my AMD Ryzen processor in the BIOS. I feel like a lot of windows users won't have the technical knowledge or understanding to be able to make a change to their BIOS to enable the TPM feature. A lot of people will be disappointed thinking that they will have to make hardware upgrades to upgrade to the new OS. I know MS is concerned about safety but they should make more of an effort to explain the TPM requirement.

Well this just made it very clear in my head that i don't have a way to get the TPM thing working on my board. I think my motherboard supports the TPM-L R2 chip but unsure as the only ones that i can find say that the later revisions of the motherboard i have do not the one i have. So i probably don't and it is like in the video no longer sold either .... in part as ASUS seems to have dropped support for the one i have.

Thank you for your help. I think this tpm requirement is so dumb. I could see it being useful for laptops.. but in a desktop setting, the odds of someone stealing it off my desk at home are pretty slim.. and even if they did, it's a gaming machine. You wouldn't find anything useful on it anyway.
