While it's hard to get a direct comparison, Ocon is the best bet. He was broadly in line with Perez and now Gasly when they were teammates. He was maybe 0.20 off alonso over the time they were teammates, sometimes more sometimes less but on average 0.2. Max was 0.75 faster than Gasly, is 0.6 faster than Perez (on average). The only person that was close to him was Danny Ric in his prime, while Max was a very young rookie, basically a schoolboy racing against men. On their day in a championship contender, I don't doubt Lewis and Alonso could match Max, but as they get older, those days will come less and less. At the moment, it's like tennis when Federer and Nadal got too old to consistently keep up with Djokovic. He just won everything.

Tho I can only imagine what different sort of pressures may come from your dad being your boss and not being able to have real away time from his work, and being put next to former world champions and compared to them in recent years. He also had one of the best rookie seasons of all time statistically which always surprises me to remember! To be fair to ocon, people do say he's absolutely lovely off the track and away from the work dynamics, but beyond competitive in the car and very aggressive defensive around racing generally. Which I can kind of understand since he's one of very few on the grid who didn't come from decent wealth and family had to sacrifice enormously for him, so can only imagine the pressure to deliver and prove it worth it and pay his family back for their sacrifice. And losing his seat to lance and realising how fast it can all slip away. I can understand a bit of desperation in his behaviour to cling on. But it does make him rather unlikeable in how he treats acts with his teammates and never really ending a partnership without issues. Especially when he's had teammates that are well liked. But people do say he's one of the nicest guys to exist when he's away from the racing. Whereas lance is quite the contrast on that since he's shown very mature, respectful and collaborative relationships with teammates and its definitely helped his image that Fernando likes him a lot and Charles saying he's one of his best friends on the grid. Theyre a funny comparison since thehre so opposite in a lot of ways. People are put off lance because of his immense priviledge, but like he's a great teammate that gets on well with everyone. 25s to Sainz in 57 laps. Remove 7-8s for the time Sainz lost in traffic and fighing others and killing his tires, thats about 3 tenths per lap. Then again, Max could probably go 2-3 tenths faster.

Yuki was 1 to 2 seconds behind Kmag for the same amount of laps proving no superior pace to the Haas until AFTER the swap was ordered on lap 50 where he finally got into Kmag's DRS. Because Yuki ignored orders, Max caught up to this group and this resulted in Max ironically giving Kmag a tow and DRS to catch up to Zhou.. which basically turned the group in a Zhou DRS-train for the remaining three laps. Had Yuki let Ricc pass sooner, he would've had better tyrelife to overtake Magnussen (who wouldn't have had the DRS advantage from being close to Zhou yet) - and could've potentially picked up Zhou once Max lapped him. Here's the kicker: Ricc's engineer thought Zhou was p10. So the swap was mandated on the belief that Ricc could pass Kmag and Zhou (both on old Hards) for a points finish.. But he messed up, because Zhou was p11.
