    Eight years and 64K miles for my 2016 Golf R manual. It's had an APR Stage 2 tune since 2017 (tune, downpipe, intercooler, turbo inlet, CAI, stage 3 clutch) and everything's working fine. Just put a new set of Bridgestone Potenzas on it. I don't track it or autocross - just enjoy daily driving a very powerful car.

    Whistling Sound- Try some tape over seam lines on the mirrors . I did this on my GLI and it was the seam on top. I then used some clear sealant on that area and whistling problem fixed.
    Clunking during DSG shifts- Try this... When car is warm and up to temperatures. Shut car off... Press start button once with foot off brake to power up accessories without motor running, push gas peddle to floor (All the way) Hold there for 30 seconds ... start car. drive away using paddle shifters. Drive and shift for awhile in a manner you wish the car to recognize . ie If you want your best shift from 2nd to 3rd to be at 4,000 RPM , then do that . Car will learn your habits.
    Again , this works in my GLI. But I find after driving awhile in Auto mode I have to do it again if I want perfect shifts in manual shift mode

    The whistle sound is common, louder when you driving between walls as the sound reflects. The door rubbers just needs to be wiped clean with soap, wipe every week to keep it from squeaks

    I have a 2018 mk7.5 Special Edition with 74000klm/45000ml on it. I've had zero issues with the Golf R in 5 years of ownership, i;ve not experienced the clunking DSG problems discussed here other than i don't use manual mode for daily driving ,cold morning starts/drive i never go about 2000rpm in auto until engine /gearbox oil is up to temperature and DSG gear changes are smooth.In the 5 years i've replaced stop/start switch , front brake rotors/pads and tyres all round.the car is serviced at VW dealership every year.There is nothing on the market that appeals to me at this stage for an upgrade.

    • @JVette01
      @JVette01  9 месяцев назад +1

      That’s great to hear! The clunk only happens in manual mode. In normal auto, it’s smooth

    • @randallbezuidenhout1505
      @randallbezuidenhout1505 9 месяцев назад

      @@JVette01 I figured out it would be in manual mode. The DSG is a pretty smart gearbox, once we take control especially on light throttle there is confusion in it system in loading the next gear change it’s not as refined as Porsche manual mode. You have great car , tops mate! . I tried to get an allocation for a 20th Anniversary Golf R sadly only 50 came to Australia as an online purchase only and sold out in 30mins.👍

    From several years of MK6R and Mk7R ownership, I recall VW updating the OEM dsg firmware to address ‘clunks’ and weird glitches. They’ll probably do the same here. Some European tuners even update to the latest oem firmware as part of their tuning process. Maybe vw already has issued an update and the dealer will install that for you. Worst case, when the tcu tune becomes available for your car, it should get rid of these issues. Definitely keep the car for the long term, i still regret parting with my 11.7s stage 2 Mk7R 😢

    I've noticed the clunking on the gearbox on my MK8 GTI dsg as well. However, mine happens when going from 1st > 2nd with light throttle. Strange but like you said it's probably just the nature of a DSG given they're such complex gearboxes

      I get the clunk on mine during 2nd > 3rd shift in manual mode with a heavy foot. I don’t know if it’s a rough shift between clutches or what, but it feels like the trans is going to drop out of the car

      DSG is the most clunky, rough shifting, shit transmission I’ve ever had in my life. I decided to buy my first automatic DSG golf r and ended up getting rid of it and getting back into a manual. DSG has held me off from the RS3 that’s how much I hate the transmission. Wish they put the 8speed auto in the Audi S5 instead of that useless 7speed DSG. Now THAT was a beautiful smooth shifting non clunky automatic that also sounded fantastic in between gear shifts.

    The 2nd to 3rd gear clunking issue was also common among the mk7.5 gen DSG. I remember I had the exact same issue in manual mode the car shifted very hard from 2nd to 3rd when engine was under moderate to high load. A lot of people I knew who had the same car also had this problem. Only one guy I knew told me he kept complaining about the issue and VW replaced his DSG and the issue was gone after the replacement. I think it’s just how this wet clutch DSG works, not necessarily an issue. 🤷‍♂️

    My wireless android auto disconnects usually near airports and hospitals, and a certain spot on the 10fwy just after passing the 110 going east bound. The trick that works for me is keeping the phone connected with a wire so that it'll switch to it once it disconnects off wireless, if I don't do that then android auto will completely fail to connect wirelessly until I shut the car off or Android auto sorts itself out again. Had that happen to me on a 2022 Tiguan as well.

RS3 is an awesome car, and as I mentioned before, if it came out a year earlier, I would have gotten that over our S3. I have always wanted a 5 cylinder Audi. If they are still making them, I will replace the S3 with an RS3 in another year or so. I usually keep cars for 3 to 4 years regardless of the miles on it.

    The front collision and pther warning lights are a common issue on many mk8 GTI's and R's and the solution is a new steering wheel - crazy, I know. My friend had that happen on his mk8 GTI all the time and it's very annoying and not safe for the sensors not to work. Go complain to your dealership and record it/take pictures - they'll just have to replace your steering wheel and done. After they replaces it for my friend - no more warning lights.

    great review as always! Same DSG problems on my mk8 gti as well. Whenever upshift from 2nd to 3rd in manual mode, with light to medium throttle around 3k rpm, it will clunk! not all the time, but It's getting very predictable now after having the car for 1 year. sometimes I just put a bit more throttle, bring the rpm up to 5k and it will help a lil bit but I can still feel the clunk. People saying it happens when the trans is cold is not exactly true. when the car is warm up, it still happens. I think it might be the computer is tripping. Like the computer might think you need short shift from 2nd to 3rd and it wasn't ready for you to bring the rpm high, then to shift, that's when the clunk will happen. Not sure if I'm making sense, but that's my thoughts.
    1 more thing I want to add is the infotainment system trips wayyy too hard in cold weather! I'm from Toronto, and it gets cold afff in winter. Whenever I do a cold start in the morning or leaving work at night, the infotainment will either black out, or triggers parking sensor saying functions is not available. I have to manually restart the infotainment sometimes 1 time or couple times for it to function normal again. it gets really annoying that I have to do it everyday cuz winter is long here.
    Overall I still love my GTI, it's a fantastic car, lots of things can be done to it, fun and a lil bit luxuries too. you get a lot of car for the price!

      The clunk is annoying in manual mode. It takes the fun out of getting on it hard in second gear for me. I pretty much have to take it above 5K or to 5.5K and beyond to avoid it. I was unable to hear the creek you were referring to when turning and going through dips, etc.
    I also did not notice any sort of squeaky belt or anything coming from the engine at idle. Sounded perfecting fine to me.
    Also, most any newer cars interior will resonate or make whistle noises when you roll down both windows while driving at speed. You also didn't exhibit the 3rd gear clunk. It would seem odd that the DSG's exhibit some of the things you mentioned since I thought it was supposed to be a good and reliable transmission capable of handling a lot of power. I haven't heard of this either but I drive manuals. The paint on the front looked a little rough for only 10k though. Especially if you don't drive with a lot of debris coming up in front of you and you're careful. I would think with the thumb down on your still it would assume you weren't interested in keep it and wouldn't call it the perfect daily driver?

    • @JVette01
      @JVette01  9 месяцев назад +2

      1. You can hear the creak if you listen carefully. The squeaky idle is very audible.
      2. False, my old Mustang and M2 do not do that when you roll both windows down.
      3. Yes, I revved too high in the gear which is why it didnt exibit the clunk. It does it all the time under moderate throttle around 3k rpm shifts. It most likely wont affect the reliability of the trans, it's just a characteristic that both of my DSG's had.
      4. There are only a few actual rock chips, a lot of it was dirt. The car was very dirty as it rained a few days prior.
      5. The thumbnail begs the question if the issues would be considered a thumbs down. It's for the audience to decide. However, for me, I don't think the minor issues takes away from how much I enjoy this car.

    Yea I think you have to get those "smoker" window inserts to have the windows down driving these cars. My MK7 is the same way. Also my mk7.5 with 27k miles has weird DSG quirks too. Mainly downshifting from 4th-1st. I will feel the car shift and hear a slight click. It's pretty subtle but I kinda wish it was smoother. Also when I decelerate, like coming to a red light, hitting the gas again when the light turns green sometimes it shifts hard. I took it to VW and they said it was fine. I was told sometimes the DSG is about to downshift and when you hit the gas and when it does that it tries to correct it in the moment which can result in a harsh shift. I'm not sure if you've experienced that yet. Curious!

    Am considering a Golf R. Have had several VWs in the past and more than anything love the handling/ride characteristics. I did a test drive of a '24 Golf R with a manual which is what I thought I would want. However, I wasn't really blown away by the transmission. Felt more like a joy stick. The last time I owned a manual it was probably late 90s and it felt more "connected". Maybe I would get used to it but I don't know. What led you to DSG vs manual? I do worry a bit about longevity with DSG.

      DSG all the way. So much faster, better launches, and hold up better with tunes than stock manual clutches

    • @JacesOwnWorld
      @JacesOwnWorld 9 месяцев назад +2

      I’m the original owner of a 2017 MK7 GTI 6spd manual owner. It currently has 170k miles on the car.
      I would 100% go DSG. The 6spd manual can be made to feel very good, with some mods, but the way VW clutch designed the clutch operating system, is junk. I’m especially referring to the integrated TOB/slave. Its operation sits inside the transmission bell housing, and they fail/leak often. Once it leaks, it contaminates the clutch plates and disks, and will destroy your clutch quickly. Also, the OEM clutch is hella weak, which is sacrilege from VW, as they 100% know that people mod these cars. So for them to make the OEM clutch so weak, that it cannot hold a simple Stage 1 tune, is dumb, while so many other manufacturers make their OEM clutches so much stronger. So once you tune the car, you have to now go out and buy aftermarket clutch kits, which so many of them, including Southbend, have very little R&D put into them, which makes them fail often and not last very long. And these aftermarket kits aren’t cheap, and shops charge a lot to install them.
      DSG will be a lot more reliable while being faster. Get the DSG.
      FYI, I’ve been through 4 aftermarket clutch kits in my GTI. Probably a good $7k in total. I had a shop install one of them. The other three I did myself

The EU, in the interest of being green (of course), wanted to reduce the use of oil by cars and requires 10000 mile oil changes. So the European car manufacturers developed oils that meet 10k durability. Perhaps doing an early first oil change would be prudent. I have a Touareg diesel with 120000 miles and a Golf with 100000 miles which have had 10k oil changes and no problems.

      @@JVette01 Good stuff, in some cars they seem to just blow warm air :/

    Why is there a thumbs down in the thumbnail then? It doesn't match the content. I hate clickbait.

    I drive BMW F20 116i since 2014 and there are no market alternative that is rwd hatchback considering my 193 cm height. I hate BMW for their new design choices and FWD. I like Golf, but its price raised too much during latest 10 years. Its seating isn't comfortly enough for my height. Why didn't they improved F20 instead of making kia/Hyundai style pig FWD shit, I hate it😢

    If your concerned about rock chips... Just PPF it. It's something you really should do anyway.

      Not interested in PPF

      Exactly! If you plan on keeping the car for several years then PPF is worth it. Otherwise, it usually isn’t. It does not increase or decrease the resale value of the car either.

    My 2023 VW Golf R AE is about to turn 5,000 miles. Love mine too. Only quarks I don’t like are:
    1. The hood is slightly off so I need to have the dealership see if it can be adjusted. Worried about them touching my car though.
    2. Car won’t launch right if the dsg trans isn’t brought up to proper temp. I’m in Michigan and until the dsg hits 130 degrees it just won’t launch right. No biggie but I was scared the first time it happened 😂

      Interesting. I never had any issues with launching until I tuned it

      Given how the wet clutches in the DSG work, it’s not surprising it needs to warm up for optimal performance. Plus Michigan is cold much of the year. In Vegas the car is warmed up even at a cold start. I think people under value the benefit of a warm engine before a hard launch. I’d never buy a used R because I’d guarantee there are too many people who put that engine under stress before it’s warm and ready.

    Welcome to German tech 2023….. Ive owned German cars all my life ( MB, BMW, VW, Porsche) , I’ve seen the progressive decline in quality and too much tech over load. Most reliable car ever 1991 BMW 325i so simple a caveman could repair it, nothing ever broke on it , daily driver on my 80 mile commute , Miami to Ft. Lauderdale for 3 plus years .. 2nd most reliable ‘98 328i E36 ( still own it with 113k miles) . Least reliable MB C320, 2020 BMW 5 Series .. everything broke in that car including transmission ., plastics got gooey in Fl heAt. Hoses last only 2 years max , coolant expansion bottles- kept one in te trunk just in case. In contrast , my daughters Mazda CX5 …. Not one issue in 3 years …

      The little bugs don’t bother me. As long as the car is reliable and drives good, idc if 1 out of every 50 times, the sensors go off or something

      But im still drawn into Golf R , or Audi S3,RS3… But Acura Integra Type S could be more trouble free in the long run .
