Fun Fact: The Wolfman battled a bear in one scene but unfortunately the bear ran away during filming. What few scenes were filmed were put into the theatrical trailer.
That bear found and ate a few keys of Columbian bam bam and ran amok terrorizing the country side, giving us the true story of Cocaine Bear. Which inspired me a fat hairy beastly man to follow in its footsteps and start doing cocaine and going camping! Funny how the world works. Anyone have a dollar bill i can borrow? Let's open up a restaurant! I just gotta find my pants first... damn gremlins. Set me up another one! I gotta have a pick me up if I'm gonna find these pants!
I always laughed at the first transformation. Talbot strips down to his t-shirt but the wolf-man is seen wearing a neatly tucked in dress shirt. The demonic beast man stopped to change clothes before beginning his rampage!
Billy West from Futurama said he based his portrayal of Nixon on the fact that he always thought whenever he saw Nixon talked that he was about to turn into a werewolf at any minute.
He actually already did review a werewolf movie called An American Werewolf in Paris, but that was years ago, so I can understand if you didn't catch that one.
As the Doc alluded to in this review, Curt Siodmak had intended for this movie to be more of a psychological thriller where we never get a definitive answer on whether or not Larry is really a werewolf. Universal executives felt audiences would feel cheated if they never actually saw the werewolf.
@5:39..Claude Rains was actually 17 years older than Lon Chaney Jr. Rain was born in 1889, while Chaney Jr. was born in 1906. As for the accents, back in those days actors never tried to do proper accents. Thus Cary Grant always played American characters with an inexplicable British accent, while British characters in Universal's Horror films had North American accents. (In the case of Larry Talbot, it at least could be explained by the fact that he'd been educated in the U.S. and had lived there for over half his life.)
Is the favorite movie of mine. Lon Chaney Jr was great as Larry / The Wolfman. I was surprised that the famous Wolfman face transformation was not here but in the Abbott & Costello film.
So glad you’re doing Universal reviews. I grew up in the 90’s when I feel these monsters kind of had a resurgence. The first Monster-Vision on AMC I remember watching was a marathon of Universal monster movies and I fell in love.. I remember checking out the Crestwood House monster series (the black and orange ones) books from my library trying to get as much info as I could.
I'm just stopping by to say how much I love these Universal Monster movie reviews. They're just a good time, and I can tell you have a lot of passion for these iconic horror films. I love it.
I thought Doctor Wolfula was too ashamed of his extended family to review their films. Some of his cousins are weird for sure. Anyways, I really enjoyed the review of this classic.
At the risk of being a pr@*k, to the evil doctor, I have to issue one correction. When referring to Werewolf of London, he said that it's considered the first werewolf film ever made. It isn't. The first one on record, is 1913's, The Werewolf. Which was also a Universal Studios production. Sadly, there are no known prints left of it.
From what I’ve also read, not only did Hull not want to sit through Pierce’s extensive makeup process, he also pointed out that parts of the Werewolf of London script required some characters to recognize Glendon when in his werewolf form and so Pierce had to scale back the makeup.
I would make the case that Fritz Lang had the first cinematic universe: Dr Mabuse the Gambler, M, and Testament of Dr Mabuse take place in the same continuity.
I wonder if Hollywood will ever be able to duplicate Universal monster Trend. Each attempt has failed. At least we have one success with the legendary Hammer Studios.
Rains looks much more than 6 years Chaney's senior to me, honestly. I never gave the accents much thought. The movie is one of my favorite, probably packing the most emotional punches of any Universal horror. He became something close to an "anti hero" later on.
The Wolf Man is THE Wolf Man movie. The definitive werewolf movie remains an American Werewolf in London though I think the two are about equal. Hey, at least it's not "four legs bad, two legs good" but Moreau about that later.
1970's to early 1980's (I'm not saying "late 1900's" !) Creature Double Feature flashback to Saturdays from 1 to 4pm on my local UHF channel WLVI 56. ty for this brother. (a wolf/human lab created hybrid movie reviewer can still be called brother right?)
The Wolfman is one of the BEST! I love it SO MUCH! Lon Chaney Jr was amazing as the Wolfman! And even till this day, he's still the best Wolfman! The same way Bela Lugosi IS Dracula! Lon Chaney Jr IS the Wolfman! Speaking of these monsters. In this movie, we have Lon Chaney as the Wolfman, we have Bela Lugosi who played Dracula AND we have Claude Rains who played the Invisible Man! We have the Wolfman, Dracula and the Invisible Man in this one movie!!! AWESOME!! I guess you can say, the first monster movie crossover before The Wolfman Meets Frankenstein. Hehehe. The makeup of the Wolfman is still amazing and the stop-motion of Chaney's transformation is brilliant! That CGI shit has NOTHING on stop-motion! Old school BABY! Evelyn Ankers as the old gypsy woman is memorable as hell! When I think of an old gypsy woman, she comes to my mind EVERY time! And how could you forget "Even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night may become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms and Autumn moon is bright." One of the best quotes to a film! I'll never forget those words! What else can I say what that hasn't already been said about this film? It's a masterpiece! Pure gold! If you haven't seen it...WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!? SEE IT!!!
In college, in an advanced Acting course. I played Lenny from Of Mice and Men too...I...did not do the role justice. To quote Tropic Thunder, I went Full R-word. It was not a good performance.
The wolf man basically invented the lore and the character for modern audiences. Everything they have done afterwards with the character and the concept builds on this film.
I don't think you really understand male/female courtship relationships of the time this movie was made. There's nothing creepy or wrong there for the mores of the time. EVERYTHING must be judged by their historical parameters, not by today's stupid ones.
Lon Chaney Jr is probably the only actor who portrayed Dracula, Wolfman, Frankenstein's monster, and the Mummy.
Actress? He was a Mulvaney?
I would say Christopher Lee but I don’t think he was ever a wolfman
Not probably. He is
A Mulvaney, well done sir,
I'm no expert on this but who else could've done all 4?
Fun Fact: The Wolfman battled a bear in one scene but unfortunately the bear ran away during filming. What few scenes were filmed were put into the theatrical trailer.
I guess we got to see that fight in the movie Prey.
It was also cut because it was thought that it would make Larry look too unsympathetic.
The Wolfman vs Cocaine Bear.
@@davidhouston6475😂
"Even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night may become a Wolfula when the Wolfula bane blooms and AHH-TOBER moon is bright."
Maria Ouspenskaya delivering the lines about what happens to a person bit by a werewolf, is the most believable dialogue in any fantasy horror film.
The Chaney father-son duo helped pave the way for horror as we know it today, raise a glass for these OGs 🍺
I always laughed at the first transformation. Talbot strips down to his t-shirt but the wolf-man is seen wearing a neatly tucked in dress shirt. The demonic beast man stopped to change clothes before beginning his rampage!
And I bet his hair was perfect
Nice! One of the best Universal Horror Movies and the birth of an icon :D
Billy West from Futurama said he based his portrayal of Nixon on the fact that he always thought whenever he saw Nixon talked that he was about to turn into a werewolf at any minute.
Nixon looked like a dog already, so it's not a far stretch...
It’s about time you covered a werewolf movie! Good job!

The soundtrack is so great, especially considering the earlier Universal horror films like Dracula had little score besides some classical music.
Is the favorite movie of mine. Lon Chaney Jr was great as Larry / The Wolfman. I was surprised that the famous Wolfman face transformation was not here but in the Abbott & Costello film.
Man I love it when Doc puts extra effort into the aesthetic for a special video. It's so freaking good
HELL YEAH !!! Thanks, Doc. One of my favorite werewolf movies. You got me howling with delight 🐺 🦇
Never get tired of the Universal Horror monsters & films. Keepin the classics alive Doc!
The one monster I thought might be real when I was a kid...
I know many people didn't like it but I actually enjoyed the Wolfman that had Sir Anthony Hopkins in it.
I really liked that movie! Very well done.
Underrated
Not as good as this one tho
Same. Went to see it in theater with my dad when I was still a kid, didn't understand why he didn't like it that much.
@@kainkong274unfortunately. One thing I love about the remake is the setting. Being set in 1800s Victorian England makes it more gothic.
Love to see the Doc covering my favorite horror movies of all time
Agreed with you about this one: I really like The Wolf Man, and not just "for the time." It's a fun movie with great atmosphere and a tortured soul.
So glad you’re doing Universal reviews. I grew up in the 90’s when I feel these monsters kind of had a resurgence. Will you be doing "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein" this month?? One of my all time favorite films!
This movie always gets me emotional 😭 it's basically a modern form of a Greek Tragedy. Reminds me of my life
Cut your hair freak 😱.
Larry “using his Pimp cane to keep bitches (hopefully not flagged for that 🙄) in line after fighting a wolf” had me rolling,
Doc!

Creighton Chaney or Creighton Duke?
Chaney is the definitive werewolf.
JUNE-IVERSAL IS BACK BABY WOOOOOOOO
Would love to see the doctors reaction to the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre game
Hey doc will there be a review of the blob one day both the 1958 original and the 1988 remake .?
From what I’ve also read, not only did Hull not want to sit through Pierce’s extensive makeup process, he also pointed out that parts of the Werewolf of London script required some characters to recognize Glendon when in his werewolf form and so Pierce had to scale back the makeup.
Thanks so much Doc for covering the essential monster movies 💀
I would make the case that Fritz Lang had the first cinematic universe: Dr Mabuse the Gambler, M, and Testament of Dr Mabuse take place in the same continuity.
Always happy when Dr. Wolfula uploads. Happy Saturday everyone.
Just got done doing housework when i saw the docula uploaded, lets goooo
Classic Lon Chaney Jr film!
This has been a favorite movie of mine since I was a kid and im only 43.
I wonder if Hollywood will ever be able to duplicate Universal monster Trend. Each attempt has failed. At least we have one success with the legendary Hammer Studios.
Doc, excellent review! Looking forward to you reviewing the classics!
One of the best intros I’ve seen in a video!
I'm guessing the gypsies didn't know Bela was a werewolf. Makes you wonder what his story was.
The 1935 film wasn’t the first werewolf film, as a now lost film from the 1920s was actually the first.
Rains looks much more than 6 years Chaney's senior to me, honestly. I never gave the accents much thought. The movie is one of my favorite, probably packing the most emotional punches of any Universal horror. He became something close to an "anti hero" later on.
I need to start watching these old movies; they look so much friggin better than anything released today.
Thank you for this. It truly set the bar. “Your suffering is at an end…”
Loveeee June-iversal horror month! Hyped!
When are you gonna make another Lego custom build? I love that video please
A Wolfman reviewing a Wolfman movie, meta commentary to the next level.
It makes me wonder what the Wolf Man would've looked like if Werewolf of London had used the original concept design.
Lon Chaney Jr is fantastic as Larry Talbitch/The Wolf man. 😀👍🐺🌚
Dude now i wanna see a phantom of the opera review. Keep up the good work!
like with Chaney and Rains there was a 6 year age gap between Lugosi and Maria Ouspenskaya who are meant to be playing a parent and child as well
I’d love to see you review Werewolf of London. In 2025 the movie will be 90 years old
"Go back and Love him!" By the way Nice way to close out the review with a Jackass the Movie Reference
Hopefully the mummy or the invisable man is next.
I love your work man! Seriously, you make some of the best content on this platform.
I love this movie it's my favorite werewolf movie
I love your reviews. Have you thought about reviewing Hitchcock’s films?
The Wolf Man is THE Wolf Man movie.
The definitive werewolf movie remains an American Werewolf in London though I think the two are about equal.
Hey, at least it's not "four legs bad, two legs good" but Moreau about that later.
My favourite Universal monster movie!
The Jackass reference at 16:43 had me howling. (Pun intended)
I like the exaggerated acting in the old movies. I get caught up in it ☺️
Does anyone know the background music doc be using?
You really should review more monster films.
Bro, you had me with the intro!
Love the Wolfman. Didn't know jack squat about the movie apparently. Great vid. And "reverse Madonna" lmao I got that joke!
I WAS LON CHANEYS LOVER! I think of that line from Jackass everytime I hear the name.
OK am I the only person who thinks that gypsy guy looks almost identical to the late Great Vincent Price ?
The Mythical Wolf Man of Lon Chaney Jr.
Greetings doc!
Sponsor of the year
Haha, I love the Jackass 1 reference lol . I often quote that and get the weirdest look
What is the name of the piano background music?
I love the tribute to the classics.
Good movie. I have it on DVD.
Commenting for the algorithm, another great review!🤘🤘
Alriiiight here we go!
1970's to early 1980's (I'm not saying "late 1900's" !) Creature Double Feature flashback to Saturdays from 1 to 4pm on my local UHF channel WLVI 56. ty for this brother. (a wolf/human
lab created hybrid movie reviewer can still be called brother right?)
Moral of the story… Always keep your Pimp hand strong lol
Awesome background
The Wolfman 1941 is very underrated.
Will we ever get a Scooby doo mystery incorporated review?
HELL YEAH !!! AWWWOOOOOO !!!!!
What a fantastic movie. Especially for the wolf feet
I ALREADY CANT WAIT
15:54 Old as they are the Universal Monsters still had a better cinematic universe than the DCEU or MCU.
The Wolfman is one of the BEST! I love it SO MUCH! Lon Chaney Jr was amazing as the Wolfman! And even till this day, he's still the best Wolfman! The same way Bela Lugosi IS Dracula! Did you graduate? Your grammar is horrible. Must have been a community college 😅.
actually Claude rains is older than lon chany jr rains was born in 1889 and chaney was 1906
Can’t wait for the next one doc keep it up 🌕🐺❤
The wolf man basically invented the lore and the character for modern audiences. Everything they have done afterwards with the character and the concept builds on this film.
Great review doc
Man made monster was the feature movie on Svengoolie last night funny enough
Wolf feet for sure!

Man I had a crush on Evelyn Ankers growing up!
two dewclaws -- er, thumbs -- up for "Hell, it's not even...with 'Werewolf' and 'London' in the title."
(2:49-2:53)
Excellent.
Nice review doc
