Fun Frankenstein Fact: The Japanese Tokusatsu film "Frankenstein Conquers the World" was so popular in Germany that in German dubs of other prolific kaiju films, they actually changed the stories so that many of the monsters Godzilla fights against were creations of Dr. Frankenstein, and if you Google "German Godzilla Posters" you'll see a bunch of Godzilla posters with the name Frankenstein plastered front and center.
False. They only changed the name. Nothing more. It be awesome if the German dubs did include Frankenstein. But the facts are they only changed the names of the movie

I would imagine as this is one of the first sound horror films that they needed to have this friendly warning. There have been stories of people being so frightened they would run out of the theater or pass out in the seats.
Yeah, I've only been here a month, and even I've noticed the climb. It's great to see, I know a few others I wanna see the same thing happen too, they deserve it.
I love Frankenstein!! This is one of the movies that is responsible for me being the horror junkie that I am. Awesome video as usual, Sir. You're the man, Doc!! Take care and be safe during these crazy days!! ✌️
It seriously blows me away this film is nearly 100 years old in 10 years and we still regard it as the most iconic Frankenstein film of all time. That's saying a lot!
Excellent presentation! One minor quibble; Frankenstein wasn't a doctor. He never graduated so was referred to in the film as Herr Frankenstein, and as Baron Frankenstein in the sequel. Some trivia: Karloff suggested to Jack Pierce to give the Monster the heavy eyelids after an early makeup test made the Monster look to alert. Karloff injured his back carrying Colin Clive up to the windmill again and again. This treatment by Whale was a motivating factor for Karloff to be among the founders of the Screen Actor's Guild.
Interestingly Milton Subotsky and Max Rosenberg submitted a script to Hammer Films based heavily on the script for Universal's Frankenstein. When Universal threatened to sue, Hammer effectively paid the two to buy their script and kill it. The two then used the money to found Hammer's biggest rival in British horror films: Amicus.
My money's on _Wolf-man_ '41. Gotta round out the most iconic trio before moving onto the B-list. Even then, I'm guessing the Mummy could lose the first slot to everybody's friend the Gill-man.
Frankenstein 1931...a film that means so much to me. As not only the first black and white movie I ever saw to completion it was also the first ever movie I said to myself right after it ended (I wanna watch that again) it’s a movie that puts a smile on my face every time I watch it.
One thing I always find fascinating is the movie and the book basically have opposite fates for the monster (who I do refer to as Frankenstein because he sees Victor as his father making him a Frankenstein). I mean, he dies in both but think about it. In the movie he climbs and dies in fire, and in the book he falls and dies in ice. Yet every sequel or movie taking place after this have him in a block of ice mirroring the book's fate.
I had heard somewhere that the scene where Frankenstein killed the little girl, he sat by the water and wept. That part of the scene was not used, I guess because that would have made the Frankenstein monster sympathetic; which was not the goal.
Interesting about the young Maria death was one cut I watched on science fiction theater back in the day had the monster slowly approaching her and then cutting away which in context, like the good Doctor said, appears much worse overall than the original cut of the film.
Dr. Wholfula!!!! Thank you so much for inspiring me to make my own Horror Movie/Bass Guitar Channel. I have been watching your vids ever since you had around 30,000 subs. Thank you man :)……..P.s. Awesome Vid!!!!
I love that your doing these Universal reviews Doc! Will you be doing The Creature From The Black Lagoon as well? Seems fitting as he was the last of the classic universal monsters
Although Ygor isn't a natural born hunchback, since he suffered a failed hanging, that certainly gave him a crooked spine. Kind of looks like a hunchback to me, but I guess it depends upon one's definition of hunchback. I'm sorry, I'm too invested in old horror movies. But it's a great review! Didn't even notice after watching the film all these years that they credited Mary Shelley like that.
Really good review. I enjoyed your "Dracula" review, too, and it was interesting that your response to it was basically the same as my dad's, despite the age difference. I'll have to find out what he thought of "Frankenstein". 😀
Couldn't agree more. The symbolism and moral lessons in the story make it resonate in a way the other Universal Monster films do not. Frankenstein is the dopest.
Another great review! Also of interest, when Frankenstein was first released, Shelley’s husband was often credited as its author, and Shelley was never paid when the book became a play. There’s also a good biography on original director and screenwriter Robert Florey that goes into some detail on Lugosi’s involvement in the project (at least from Florey’s perspective). It’s pretty rare (or at least it used to be, I only ever found it at one library) but it has information you won’t find anywhere else and that a lot of researchers seem to be unaware of. I can’t wait for your next review!
It really is utterly dripping with style. The closest adaptation is Kenneth Branagh's film with Robert DeNiro, and even that movie condenses the story significantly and can't help but actually add the 'Bride of Frankenstein' the monster wants, at the end of the movie.
"GRRUUUUUUUUNNHGGGGGG AAARRRRRRGHHHHWSAME ROOOOCTTARRR RWOOOOLFULAAAAAAAA!!! GRAAAAAAHHT!!!" Frankenstein's monster in reaction to knowing Doctor Fucking Wolfula is reviewing his first film!
Agreed. Bride is a better movie, but Karloff definitely looks creepier in the first film. Which I suppose makes sense, considering how differently the monster is presented and developed in the two respective films.
Well one reason for that is that in the 1931 film Karloff wasn't getting all that much to eat and he was somewhat near starvation when James Whale first cast him as the Monster in 1931 and he had something of an emaciated face which showed in 1931, By the time of The Bride of Frankenstein in 1935 he was a main star at Universal and was getting three square meals a day by this time.
B&tch, this whole film's sacrilegious! It's 50/50... more classic lines, Doc! Btw, thank for letting the adorable...I mean, grotesque Ghoulash take care of those sh&tty unboxings. I love those vids! And yes, they may be free, but they are pretty sh&tty. hehe
One thing that was interesting to me was the Karloff was pretty old, 40+ when he made the film and became a star, and always wondered what it might have been if he’d been younger, at the very least he’d probably have been in better health with what he put up with in Frankenstein.
I absolutely LOVE this movie and Bride of Frankenstein...but the spinoffs and sequels that came after barely measured up or just got...too ridiculous. Aside from that, as much as this movie rocks; nothing can compare to the original novel....which goes without saying for most film adaptations. For one thing; the creature was described as much taller and more horrific looking with several body stitches, yellow eyes, long (and messy) black hair and straight black lips (as Mary Shelley describes)
This is another fine history lesson and review. Thanks, Doctor Wolfula. And, "It's sort of like how parents of the average Reddit user must feel." Classic Wolfy!
Funny you should say he's getting frisky. That moment always makes me think of a drunken sailor planning to make the moves on her. And on the subject of plot holes. It's no abnormal brain as Frankenstein could have explained and everyone just assumed things. But the Mayor splits the townsfolk into three torch carrying pitchforked mob. And tell them to search everywhere for the "Fiend" But the movie never shows that anyone knows who their looking for. Bad time to be looking for an inn.
Fun fact: In the original release of the film, when character Henry Frankenstein says "Now I know what it feels like to be God!", the sensors superimposed a sound clip of lightening so the audience could not hear the line. It was only much later in the 20th century that a version of the film was released that didn't feature the lightenign sound clip.
9:39 Censored for sacrilege? Why does this keep coming up in movies and such? Whether it's sex trafficking or drug use or whatever. Depicting something doesn't mean the film supports it. Quite the opposite can be the case, such as here. The book's title is "the Modern Prometheus." That one shouldn't play God is THE POINT OF THE STORY! By "Henry" saying that line, it's showing the other characters and the audience how far gone he is. We're not meant to be rooting for him, especially when we see exactly what his magnum opus is and how he treats it. His arrogant pride and subsequent lack of love for his creation shows how *unlike* God he is.

Plus at the end scenes up on the mountains , because of HD nowadays I think The backdrop is SO noticably a huge Canvas / Curtain at times beyond behind the sets too. I'd suggest exploring other Universal Monster films. Most are a blast.
I like how the film opens with Edward Van Sloan giving a "friendly warning" to the audience. It feels so formal.
I would imagine as this is one of the first sound horror films that they needed to have this friendly warning. There have been stories of people being so frightened they would run out of the theater or pass out in the seats.
James Whale was, as Mark Gatiss once put it, the first horror auteur.

There are only two Frankenstein movies in which the Monster is found frozen in ice - "Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman" and "The Evil of Frankenstein".
In the Bride of Frankenstein it turns out that the monster fell into a pit full of water at the bottom of the windmill. No ice involved.
In the book he kills himself out of guilt for all the evil things he's done after realising he's become the monster everyone sees him as.
