    Great video. Being 5’7” I was leaning towards LC GS last year but decided to go with standard 2017 GS Ralley and I’ve been able to manage it just fine in the minimum suspension setting. If I’m riding with a passenger I just put the low seat on and good to go. Wish I had waited a year and bought the 1250 GS, sounds like I best avoid a test ride otherwise I’ll be too tempted to make the upgrade!

I had been looking at GSAs for a long time - and added the GSA this past March. It is a great bike. Both are obviously capable of long distance riding but are completely different bikes. I would never take the RGL camping, and the wife has no interest in riding on the back of the GSA. I’m lucky to have and enjoy both 👍

      @@ridemfast7625 She has not. She knows and likes the comfort of that big HD seat and backrest. The GSA even in the low suspension model, is pretty tall for her to get up on (bad knee), and it doesn’t give the illusion of passenger security without the arm rests and butt speakers - she feels locked in with them. I tell her, ‘you realize that those things don’t make you secure on the bike’, but in her mind, they do.

  • @inthesPhila

    I enjoy many of your RUclipss, thanks. Couple unmentioned differences with GS. The GSA windscreen is larger, easy to switch to any windscreen. The GSA has those plexiglass tank top wind deflectors. The GSA has a higher total weight limit. One video noted that a few screws near the rear wheel are longer on a GSA, maybe some part is thicker. Supposedly the GSA rear shock is longer and sits the bike higher.

    • @christopherfreeman3095
      @christopherfreeman3095 Год назад

      The GSA is taller with standard suspension than the GS. A “HP” option is available for the GS to make it as tall as the GSA. Low for the GSA is only 0.5-0.8” lower than the Standard GS, but the Low GS is another 1.5” lower still. Then on top of all that you can make further adjustments with the different seats and seat settings. Rather confusing all together.

    When I get around having the chance to buy one not a question in my mind I'll definitely go for the R1250 GS definitely avoid anything low suspension or low chassis being 6.2". Get two of these 1.5 gallon stackable gas cans one on each side to have equal range. I just love the look of the slicker smoother body around that gas tank area. That is what caught my eye in the first place in the GS. So I shall personally stick to that I believe.

Keep in mind that I owned R100GS so riding a tall bike was not something new. I got the 1250GS HP with sport suspension which is same shock as GSA, about 1” more travel than standard.

      People, don't do decisions like that based on RUclips videos. If somebody doesn't like lowered version, it might still be best option for your measurements. These bikes are way too expensive to bee chosen lightly. Do your research and try different options to know what is right for you. You might find normal version is great on 95% situations, but those 5% are completely undoable and you need to go lowered route. You can also play with low saddle. Still lowered bike with normal saddle might suite your butt better.
      Liked the info about width of the bike, GSA not being wider. It's a no brainer when you see it.

  • @TheMonkini

    Thanks Shawn for sharing your knowledge and always in such a joyful way. As many I am in the conundrum of GSA lowered or not. From the spec sheet the lowered GSA would have the same suspension travel as the GS. So don't understand why the suspension would feel harder. But as you pointed moving the suspension down moves the wheels up in the parallelogram which shortens wheel base. GSA already 1cm shorter wheel base than the GS. Been trying to find out wheelbase of the lowered GSA with no success. From your dealer info, would you share this? As we know shorter wheel base means form flickable (sports bike like) and longer increases stability (cruisers). BMW maybe has shortened the wheel base on the GSA to compensate for a bike that looks bigger. So wonder how they though about the low chasi GSA option keeping with its design principles. Feelings are better guidance than calculations on a spread sheet, but knowing helps reconcile the heart to the mind. Thanks!!

    I'd be so upside down right now if I tried to trade in my Eluder, but you are really making me want an R1250GSA! I'm gonna have to do some number crunching to see if I can afford to pay for two bikes at once! Lol! Peace and love.

      I can't afford it, but I priced out a R1250GSA Style Exclusive with all the bells and whistles and all Black Bags and hardware. A fine looking machine! And I would have no heartburn paying what they're wanting for it... If I didn't already have to pay for a new bike.

    I march this year i decided to sell my 3 bikes r1200rt 05. Tuono 04. Z1000sx 2015. Then put money in and by a new bmw. I was twixed between s1000xr and a gs. But at 54 i reasoned that the gs with boxer motor was a bit too "old man" for me and as it needed to do everything i thought the s1000xr has the sports bike element. So i found a display bike at chester motorrad. Fully loaded. £2500 under the config price so i nailed it. Well after 3500 miles i had had enough it was too top heavy. Pegs are in the way when feet down no bottom end pull vibey it stalled fully loaded on an incline more than once so bad once i had to ask daughter to get off and walk so i could pull away. Well enough was enough i decided to give the gs range a closer look. I organised a test ride day at rotherham motorrad south yorkshire. I planned a gsa gsa low chassis and sto gs i road the gsa rallye home to check it would go down my narrow ramp. It did and straight awy i was hooked so much so i didnt bother test riding the other 2 the gs felt thinner and smaller than xr and i like a beefy bike not a fan of thin bikes. I specced the gsa with everything except the billet packs and 719 nonesense shes rallye model te gold wheels going for 600mile service today £100 so thats ok my trade in price was so good i only lost £400 on my xr due to the low price i paid initially. And i agree with you the gsa gives you so much more as standard. And the looks are so madmax. Is that your own gsa

    Hey Shawn, thanks for the vids, love watching yours, very informative. I am contemplating upgrading finally from my 08GSA to a new 19 or 20. Would you say the new ones ride plusher, better, stronger than my 08 and any chance the top case might transfer with a lock change, or is that not an option?

    So, I'm 5'7 and 30" inseam and would need the lowered version, but you said it will ride like a HD sportster with stock suspension. That's like riding a brick. So are you saying BMW hasn't taken all this in consideration? Now I'm second guessing ordering my GSA with the low suspension if it's going to ride like a brick!

    Thanks Shawn, erring towards the GSA this time, currently riding a standard 2015 Triple Black, I’m 5’9” tall with a 29” inside leg. Standard GS is fine for me on low setting but I think I’ll need at least a low seat with the GSA. I’ve ridden a standard 1250 and loved it but I think I need to test ride the GSA before I make my choice. Biggest question is whether I go for the Rallye or the Exclusive, I love olives. Merry Xmas by the way...

    You liked the regular suspension rather than the low on the HP. I have a 29 inch inseam and the balls of my feet are on the ground. I'dl like very much to purchase an HP, but I'm curious, what is your inseam? You do not seem to have any problems with the regular suspension. My concern is just getting on and off the bike. I have a 2016 GSA with low suspension and a low seat and have no problems with that set up, but would like more suspension travel.

    Another nice video Shawn and very informative.
    At this time I am searching about GSA but my main issue is my height and weight. 5'4" and 140 lbs. I rode a Ducati Multistrada and my issue during stop because is too high and i got tired overtime. I guess the low suspension will be suitable.
    How do you compare maintenance cost of BMW compare to Harley? Let me know pls.

  • @bayouboy8644

    Shawn, I really want the GSA, but i am inseam challenged at 30" i'm 5'9 but have been riding for 45 years on dirt and street, and am very capable . But I know they have a high seat. It will be ridden 99.8% street, I'am only really concern getting on and off, not so much riding it, and coming to a stop, I know I'll be on the balls of my feet. Not sure how tall you are, so want to get your thoughts.

    I love the beast look of the GSA . Does it lack power because of the extra Gasolin weight and deposit chassis? Would u buy the GSA? in summer the wider tank doesnt let ur legs refresh right?

    • @ShawnSmoak
      @ShawnSmoak  6 лет назад +2

      Lol, I think you could tow a camper behind one of these and not notice a power loss..! No, you don’t notice any power differences between the GS and GSA... I would buy one tomorrow if something happened to this one. As I mentioned in the video, the protection of the larger tank does make for a warmer ride in extreme heat situations, but you can easily scoop-in cooling air with you legs...
      Thanks for watching!

    great video,... one question: (i'm sorry if you mentioned this) what is your height and inseam? I'm 5'9" with 30 inseam and i'm worried that I won't be able to balance it at stop lights unless i get the low suspension. Thoughts? I'm seriously considering the 1250 RS over the GSA since it's lower than GSA and the RS is better suited to my tarmac, "non-offroading", needs..
