These are some magnets you could use: amzn.to/2EKNjXm
Here is a good three piece set of tools: amzn.to/2EKNxha
And here are some sponges: amzn.to/2qetvS9
I connected deeply with this guy at second 25 when he did that lean to help himself get up from a squat
Thank you for the comment and connecting deeply with me. The older I get, the further away the ground seams. My knee still hurts from making my Giant Gee Haw Whimmy Diddle.
I was like “magnets”? And then I’m like “god this guy is a genius!”
Thanks. I love Wile E. Coyote moments.
@Farina Marcini Yup, Algae magnets, although they really only work on a recent, soft algae coatings. The hardened stuff requires a more aggressive technique, like a razor blade, done carefully.
worked great on my mazda 3 i also sewed a piece of thread to the pouch to making retrieving it out of the housing a lot easier.
Thanks for the comment. I am glad it worked for you. The piece of thread idea is great. My sister has a mazda 3 stick shift that is so fun to drive.
You're a genius!
Thanks a lot for your tip. Just did the headlights of my nice Saab convertible and what a difference! Thanks again!
Thank you for taking the time to say thanks. I am glad I could help.
Charlie, I'm impressed. I just don't have a shop to work from but if I did, your way would be my way! Thanks again!!
Don't let the lack of a shop stop you. This is a job you could do in the driveway. Thank you for the comment and good luck.
I logged into RUclips just to drop this comment, shat my pants because I spent 300 bucks on some headlights. Ended up with one of them covered in condensation that left a nasty film and was already having nightmares about hearing it up in the oven, especially because I think if it already has that nastiness inside and you bake it you’ll accidentally cook the grime in forever. Unfortunately my lights have about a 3mm passing between the backing and the actual inside of the lens itself but I’ll do what one comment said and just sew the magnet into a microfiber cloth. Pray for me lol about to go to the hardware store for the stuff. I’ll drop an update comment after I take out my headlight and clean it, thank you for this I had this idea myself but never saw it in practice. Ur a life saver I thought I threw 300$ in the trash!!!
Thank you so much for your comment. I am looking forward to see how it turns out for you.
I'm guilty, I like these instructional videos to be swift and to the point. I like your narrative tone, it's very Zen like and calm. The idea of using magnets inside and out is very cool for those who have not heard about that method before. We have been using this trick to clean our large fish tank glass and it works great! The only thing I would suggest is doing a time compression effect when performing repetitive tasks like sewing, sanding, nailing and drilling. The increase in frame rate is visually entertaining while still being instructional.
Thank you for the comment. I have been thinking of making a short version of this video. My mom even said, if she is looking for an instructional video, she will not watch one that is over five minutes long.
Great idea and I'm really jealous of your relatively huge opening in the back of the headlight.
Thank you for the comment. The opening in back is big, but still the reflector inside still can get in the way. Good luck cleaning your headlights.
I'm jealous that you can remove your headlight just removing a couple of nuts.. I have to unmount half of the car to remove mine
Thank you!! My ktm superduke 1290 had this hazy look inside the headlight which annoyed me. And the way the headlight is shaped i couldn’t poke anything up the top portion. This idea worked perfectly! Pulled a magnet out of the bottom of a trouble light. Sewed it inside a small bit of micro fibre cloth. Threw it inside the headlight moved it around with another magnet just wrapped in micro fibre. 100% better.
Then for the finishing perfection I sprayed some vuplex plastic cleaner on the magnet that goes inside and rubbed it around until it was perfectly clear.
Thanks for sharing!
You are welcome. I am glad my video helped you keep your beautiful bike looking its best. Thank you for the comment.
Thanks bro! Very helpful video
dont listen to the ppl saying you need to edit your vids shorter. Its better this way because ppl want to learn how someone does the entire process. If you do edit then ur gonna get way more ppl asking questions in the comments. Theyre gonna be clueless.
sir how to clean inside the headligth..
Very clever idea. I will try this out after sourcing some decent magnets.
Thank you for the comment. Your local hardware or arts and crafts store should have some. Good luck.
This method looks way better than heating up the headlight in a oven and trying to pry it open. Thank you so much!
The videos of putting the headlights in the oven is all I could find, before I came up with this idea. And I did not want to buy a new oven, if I caught my headlight on fire. I am glad you like it. Thank you for the comment.
Hi! Have you used this IPA on material which goes inside?
Brilliant! You my friend is a genius
Thank you.
Nice work Charles!
Thank you.
I'm going to try it in my 2012 SRX Cadillac. Thank you 👍
Please let me know how it turns out.
That's a great idea! Going to test it asap!.
Thank you. Good luck.
@11:11 that oof was my favorite part
I like to include the oofs in my videos. Too much trouble to start over and a video that is too polished doesn't seam real. Thank you for enjoying the oof. I just watched it about five times.
Thanks for video sir. Very informative.. Good job..!
Thank you for the comment.
Amazing! Thank you so much!
Thank you for the commentl
Thank you for the comment.
Thank you Charles
Thank you for the thank you. I hope you get great results cleaning your headlights.
Fantastic video mate, good job
Thank you.
used to have this exact same car. actually was my first car. These things come alive once you put some wrx struts on them
Thanks for the comment. Good to know about the struts. It does ride a bit squishy with the original old springs and struts.
great job!!!
Thank you.
einstein: I need to clean my car lamp inside
Charles: hold my beer 🍻
Thank you so much for the wonderful comment. I usually compare myself to Wile E. Coyote Super Genius, because most of my "good Ideas" turn out like his.
YES. Nice one!
Thank you.
Really good idea man
Thank you.
Great video.
Thank you.
great idea! better than backing the freaking headlight to open it and clean the inside !
Thank you for the comment. I saw some of the headlight "baking" videos . I just had this thought of how much could go wrong, like melting your headlights or catching them on fire. And what would food cooked later in that oven taste like?
Hello,
what's the name of flexible cable tong ? have you any URLs to buy it ?
thanks
Flexible Claw Pick Up Tool there are a bunch on Amazon. Here is one:
www.amazon.com/Flexible-Claw-Automotive-Mechanic-Generic/dp/B000RB7AGY/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1497487804&sr=8-4&keywords=flexible+grabbing+tool
Great idea
Thank you.
Hope it works for my tail light as well
Do you think the grabber tool used in the video would fit the slot for a 9005 high beam, which I assume is narrower? My car has projector low beams, so I dont think i could stick it through there. Thanks!
The cool thing about those grabber tools, is that the grabber thing collapses into the tool, when it retracts. They are only about 3/8" diameter, when retracted, so it should have no problem fitting. Thank you for the question.
@@CHARLESCRANFORD That's good to hear, thank you! I look forward to cleaning out my lights.
You can leave a long tail of thread from where you sew your inside fabric then you can retrieve the inside swab.
What kind of cleaners did you guys use ? I have some dried moisture residue i need to remove
With my headlights, I found that denatured alcohol worked well. Thank you for the question.
Hi,
do you have the link where can I buy the magnets?thanks
I got mine from the local hardware store. Just look for rare earth magnets.
You could leave the thread long enough without cutting so that you can pull the cleaning sponge from the inside in case it falls off, this way you may not need to remove the headlight from the car 😃
Awesome video ! 👏
Thank you for the comment. The main reason I took the headlight out, was that it was almost impossible to film what I was doing and it make any sense. That and I wanted to polish the outside of the light, while it was out of the car. The bad thing about my car headlights is there is a reflector thing in the middle, that is metal, and the magnet would get caught on it all the time. This made using the grabber thing necessary.
CHARLES CRANFORD awesome
Thanks for the response
Hey man!!!! Do you know if this would work on a seventh gen Maxima???
I am not sure, but if you can fit the cloth-magnet thru the bulb hole, it should work. Good luck.
Will those scourer part cuts for through the hole of the lens
Sew a shoestring to the inside pouch and leave enough of the string hanging out of the lamp hole for just in case you drop the pouch and cannot reach it with the grabber 👍
Great idea. Thank you for your comment.
Nice sandals Moses 🙌
I got those sandals in 2002 and they have been everywhere. They are about to tall apart. If you don't own a pair of Chacos, you don't know what you are missing. Thank you for noticing and commenting on some of my favorite shoes.
@@CHARLESCRANFORD ay its all about comfort man! Id wear mine to work if I could get away with it. Exactly you can't throw them out until they literally fall of your feet😂😂😂😂
Great video
Thank you for the comment.
Charles - you should patent this! :)
Thanks for the comment. It probably already is patented, I have seen bigger sponges, with the magnets inside, to clean fish tanks. That is what gave me the idea.
Can you recommend some cleaners. Can you use a touch of rubbing compound for stubborn stains
You could try. I recommend trying in an area that wouldn't matter if it got messed up, like the side. That way, if it did damage the surface, at least it wouldn't be where it matters. It would be a disaster if you scratched the middle of the headlight to a point that you would have to replace it.
Helpful
Thank you.
This was originally shown on the CATAHA Y.tube site.
I got the idea, right away and it is brilliant. But I didn't get what the sponge/scrubber is for. It doesn't fit inside the opening. What did i miss?
I was trying to show that you could make it with different materials. The t-shirt material works best, but if you had something stubborn, on the inside of your headlight, you could make the sponge magnet to scrub more aggressively. Thank you for the question. Sorry for the confusion.
Does the lens cover not just unclip? I need to do inside my Mazda headlights, they're scratched up bad for some reason
Most of the ones I have seen look like they would , but the two halves are glued together. You can find videos of showing how to heat them in an oven to release the "glue" and get the halves apart. I thought this way was safer, quicker, and easier. Thank you for the question and good luck with your headlights.
No....you need to put the headlight in the oven to get the glue loose and pry it apart
@@CHARLESCRANFORD correct
This is genius.
Thank you. I hope it works well for you.
How about the reflector side, how do u clean it?
The same way. Take out the bulb, drop your magnet cloth in, move it around , and take it out. Thank you for the question.
Where can you buy the supplies?
I used an old t-shirt for the fabric. The magnets I got from the local hardware store.
I bought magnets on amazon (just search strong magnet and a bunch come up) and i already have a grabber thing
Good video. Would be much better edited down to 3 or 4 minutes of "meat".
Thanks for the comment and advice. I try to edit my videos shorter, but I am always worried about leaving something out.
I think you misunderstood me. You edit AFTER making the video, you make the call what stays and what goes. Do they really need to see me tiny-scissor cut a tee shirt, twice? With decent video editing SW, your can record hours of material, then whittle it down as YOU see fit.
I was thinking the same thing. The information is great but almost the entire build process is gruelingly long. It could be sped to x5 speed with brief stops at each finished "part". Thanks.
Liquid Crypto
That’s true I had to skip through like half the video
Liquid Crypto
You kinda sound like a dick.
A small piece of open cell foam cut to fit inside the vent tube will keep dust out of the housing while still allowing the vent to fulfill its purpose.
Thanks for the comment. That is a great idea.
How do you take your headlights out like that, though?
My headlights came off with just three screws, but all cars will be different. Good luck.
hold lens cover down then let rages touch to clean if come loose just touch mag together easy
sorry good job
@@winstonledford5438 Thank you for the comment.
The headlight you start cleaning at @9:43 is somewhat different than what was there at the beginning of the video.
Thank you for your comment. It is the same headlight, I had cleaned it before shooting this video, otherwise I would not have been able to video thru the haze that had built up over the last year of it being outside. The car is a 1998, so at the time of the video, the light was 19 years old. You can see some photos of the headlight, before cleaning, inside and out, at the Instructable I made here: www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Clean-the-Inside-of-a-Headlight/ Thanks again for your comment.
This is really clever
Thank you.
I'm using this way since 2 year 👍 but it makes a little scraches
You might try using thicker cloth or magnets that are not as strong. Thanks for the comment.
@@CHARLESCRANFORD i use soft microfiber cloth but sometimes there is a little of dust inside the headlight that make a little scraches
I just came from Flyryde's vid and he said this exact thing. He advocates against touching the inside of the lens with anything because even the smallest scratches will show with the lights on.. but I'm being stubborn and want to find a solution.
Would be good to see it on an actual hazy headlight
I had already polished the outside, which was the really hazy part. Cleaning the inside is mainly just wiping out years of dust mixed with condensation. Thank you for the comment.
Will it work on Infiniti g37
I am not sure. I do not have an Infinity G37. If you can take out the bulb and access the inside of the headlight, it should. Good luck.
Do you think it's possible to take some polish on and polish them on the inside? 🤔
It might be possible, but I would test it on a small area first, to make sure it will be okay.
@@CHARLESCRANFORD just tried to wash inside with the magnets worked good thx :)
@@broderen6234 Thank you for the comment.
good idea👍🏻
Thank you.
its like cleaning a fish tank xD
That is exactly where I got the idea. Thank you for the comment.
What cleaner did you use?Alcohol ?
Yes. It was 99% Isopropyl alcohol. I tested a corner of the light housing to make sure it would be safe. Thank you for the question.
Are these headlight lenses glass or plastic? Im guessing if they are plastic this would scratch them? Great idea otherwise, though!
Thank you for the question. They are plastic. You want to make sure the fabric or sponge you use is soft enough to not scratch the plastic. The material I used was from an old cotton t-shirt, and it worked perfectly.
Try using a bottle sponge next time, might be a lot faster ?
Good video but i rather open up the lense using hairdryer than sewing cloth for magnets
Thank you for the comment. All the stuff I saw, said that you had to put them in the oven. If it only takes the heat of a hair dryer, it might not be that bad.
Fucking amazing love this easy trick
Thank you for the expletive amazing complement.
Those shoes though. I’m just teasing.
I read the comment and then had to watch the video to see which shoes. I have a bunch of odd shoes. Chacos are great and they leave cool tan lines. Thanks for the teasing comment.
Those lips tho ;)
@John Brier In some of my videos......I am not even wearing shoes.
@John Brier American/Australian Not so much about getting sick, more about loosing toes. The occasional barefoot walk in the snow feels nice, but you would not want to indulge too much. Thank you for the comment.
You may have just saved me $400 with this.
I am glad. It is crazy how expensive replacement headlights are.
those clips dont come off the lights??
Good question....Yes they do, but the clear plastic and the black plastic are glued together. I have seen videos where people put their headlight in the oven and "bake" it for a while to loosen the glue enough to pull the two pieces apart. I was worried that I would damage my headlights or make my wife mad at me for baking my headlights in the oven. I thought this method was a better solution and I could have done it by leaving the headlight assembly in the car and just taking out the bulb to gain access to the inside of the headlight assembly. Thank you for this question.
WHAT DID YOU PUT ON THE CLOTH? RUBBING ALCOHOL?
I was able to clean the dust out with just the dry cloth. If you use anything, make sure you test it on the outside of the headlight first. Thanks for the comment/question.
Do not put alcohol or windex on plastic!!!
I tried a dry cloth, no effect, then dipped it in warm water with a very small amount of dish soap and it worked much better. I left the bulb out overnight to speed up drying.
01whitelightning Didn’t see your comment wish I did :| I happened to use that. How did you manage to clean up the haze it left?
Mine has the left over haze. Hopefully the heat of the lights will just make it evaporate . I did go over with water it went away but it slowly come back (a bit)
Well... that was not the approach I was expecting.
Yea I thought that there had to be a better way than baking your headlights in the oven and taking them apart. Thank you for your comment and I hope this helps you get your headlights clean.
This approach is mostly fine if the headlamp units are cheap and you don't care if they get streaky or totally screwed up. If your car is one of those that has headlight units costing in the neighborhood of $1000 or so, you definitely don't want to do this. Avoid using any contact on the inside of the lens if at all possible. The inside is coated with material that you will destroy if you apply pressure to it with your fingers, an old t-shirt, or anything but the most delicate touch with a clean wet super soft microfiber. Never never never no not ever use alcohol on the inside of the plastic lens. It will destroy the coating and you can kiss your expensive lens goodbye, or learn to love foggy ugly lights. Experts recommend using nothing stronger than dish soap, which should be rinsed out with distilled water and carefully dried with clean compressed air. If the liquid only approach fails, the next level of aggression is extremely careful use of very fine grain microfiber wet down with distilled water. Minimize any pressure and don't overdo the rubbing. Rinse with distilled water and again, dry it with CLEAN compressed air. Best approach: just pay the money to someone who actually knows how to do it safely, or spend the megabucks on nice new ones. ;-)
I agree. If my headlights were new and foggy I would have been much more careful with them. They are 24 years old and new ones would cost about $100 a piece. I had cleaned the outside, and was able to see the dirt on the inside. I looked up ways to clean the inside, but most of the solutions I saw were to take the headlights apart using heat to melt the glue, holding the two halves together. I thought that the magnet method would be worth a shot, and it did work on my headlights. If I try it again, I will try the microfiber material. If I had a car that had headlights worth $1000 a piece, I would take it to a professional. Thank you for your comment.
@@CHARLESCRANFORD even some pretty ordinary vehicles have headlamps that can't even be replaced with used ones for less than 800 bucks each and they won't pass the safety inspection if they aren't clear. If one really must take them apart, scary as it seems, I think about 13 or 14 minutes in a 200 F oven might be the best route. At least consider mixing that approach with some sincere heartfelt prayers lol.
@@kennethstanton5407 I don't even want to think about what baking a headlight in an oven smells like. That was the main reason that I didn't try that method. I don't think it would have made the wife happy.
@@kennethstanton5407 Not all headlights are sealed with butyl rubber. If you attempt to bake one that is not, you will destroy the light.
Hi,
What is the name of alcohol??
What should i buy alcohol??
Is methanol okay??
You want to test what ever you use, on a small section of your headlight, before using it all over. You mainly want something that will dry quickly without leaving a residue. I used denatured alcohol before, but I have had good luck with isopropyl alcohol in a high percentage like 90 or higher. Thank you for the comment, and good luck.
Yeah but you would think he has some proper scissors in the house!
I do, but the ones I used were already on me. Thank you for the comment.
A lot of work........but very clever nonetheless. :)
Thanks for the comment. I know it seams a bit much, but it makes a big difference if your headlights are dirty and grungy on the inside.
Tried to a toothbrush but not long enough.
Have you tried the magnets and cloth yet?
CHARLES CRANFORD yes i have but the plastic on the headlights doesn't allow my magnets to stick together.
@@Bk1_sk Try stronger magnets and thinner cloth.
Why does nobody offer this service? So many ppl would pay for it.
Great question. Some carwash or car detailing companies will offer an outside headlight refresh which is usually all a car needs. When your car gets old or is in a humid/dusty environment would be when you would need to clean the inside. Thank you for your question.
this will severely scratch the inside of your lens. You should never touch the inside with anything abrasive. looks okay from 20 feet away and when the suns out but at night bet you can see alot of damage
You want to use something soft and non abrasive like tshirt material or a microfiber cloth. If you are concerned about scratches, you should test it in a corner before cleaning the entire inside.
bro idk but for me u look like Adam Sadler
I will take that as a compliment. Thank you.
Ohwordbet
Thank you for the comment.
Just remove the fucking glass apart and do it
You would think so, but the "glass" (actually plastic) part is glued to the back. You can heat this glue up and try and take them apart, but you run the risk of damaging your headlight. There are youtube videos of people doing this with heat guns and ovens. I did not want to risk melting, cracking, or otherwise damaging my headlights. Thanks for the comment.
we need to start a Colony just for subaru owners; freaks of the universe~
I think it is called Asheville NC. Thanks for the comment.
sir how to clean inside the headligth
becouse i foot alcohol and clean with rug
i d use some alcohol
Alcohol works great. Thank you for the comment.
Jlh have you seen the way home depot you smoke weed with purple flowers for shoes you smoke yay or nay
Not sure what your comment is asking.....but here goes I have been to Home Depot, I do not smoke weed (but to each his own) and although I have some weird shoes, I have never worn purple flowers for shoes. I hope this answers your questions.
Nooooo !!! Just don’t do this EVER !!! 🤦♀️
Too slow, its boring, I'm falling asleep
Thank you for the feedback. I have been thinking of making a shorter version. I wanted this video to be for someone that wanted all the details.
That was amazing I felt like it was watching the bob ross of mechanics 🧰
Thank you. I do sometimes make "Happy little mistakes" when working on my cars, but it is not painting landscapes, and I am usually not happy or soft spoken afterwards. My hair is naturally curly and is long now. I should make a new short version of this video. Thank you for the comment.
