I know the video is 4 years too late. But, I'll be canceling cable TV soon and wanted to make a video that shows a perspective for some people that may have cable or satellite and simply forgot about the transition.

This video, although 8 years old, was EXTREMELY helpful, I've got an old CRT Television that I've had for quite some time, I used to use it to watch cable television but ever since we cancelled it I've never had the time to use it, or never had the care more like it, once I put away my old SNES and ATARI 2600 I never used it for anything, but after seeing this video I can finally start using it again as I've tracked down a shiny set of snap on rabbit ears like you've got (it has the mounting point for them) and I can still buy a converter box from some box stores, and I can finally enjoy watching the tube again!
Make sure you don’t leave it on by accident or else your gonna fokin die
my town has cheap cable xd
Time to say goodbye to analog TV for the last time tomorrow at 11:59 pm.

Sweet, I have a 1986 Mitsubishi TV at home and we’re finally cancelling Cox. Our family has had converter boxes before between 2009-2014. My family has flat screens now and they stream their shit, I still watch TV and VCR. This is the only video I’ve seen where I’ve seen a person hook up a converter box to a TV with antennas that are part of it, or attached to it, especially the kinds of TV’s from the 70’s. Usually I’m seeing TVs from the 90s and beyond being hooked up with a converter box. This is really useful because my TV also has rabbit ears built into them, it can also be unscrewed I think. My TV has the pitchforks and the coaxial, so this is perfect. Though instead of the knobs, its buttons with a glowing number channel screen above them.
This was great. Not a lot of tutorials on this subject matter. Not sure why so many people disliked this tutorial. I just got a portable RCA tv from 1976 that only has screw terminals as inputs and now I know a little bit more about the lingo so I can start searching on how to input with twin leads. You got my like and sub.
I think it’s great too because I have a Mitsubishi from ‘86 that has the rabbit ears screwed on and includes the pitchforks, and the coaxial inputs.
I always had a sweet spot for seeing an image through a CRT Television set. Although flatscreen HDTVS don't have an obnoxious ringing and usually have professionally put together guides, there was always something about a bulky CRT with those vibrant colors that triggered my nostalgia.
+Kindle I'm with you. I'm the same with VHS. I don't know what it is but man just seeing those scan lines and then it tracking into place and everything lol. I don't know. Maybe I'm crazy.
@@irancontraband4650 Indeed. And don't forget about the grainy picture with flashes of white specs and lower video quality. It is strangely satisfying.
@@irancontraband4650 Ooh and how it takes time to warm-up after turning it on.
Excellent video. I'm having enough trouble getting good reception on a digital TV set in my bedroom. I'm having to route things through an Xbox and a signal booster to get anything I actually want to watch.
My mum and dad chucked out our old CRT TV but I'd have use for it now for retro gaming.
That TV is so cool looking! I love the wood grain! Now I can use my old TV just like anybody else can! The new TV’s are made so cheap! These are made to last!
I still have one of my Trinitron
Thank you so much for this. I have an old tv with built in VHS that I wanted to use and I bought a converter box that doesn't mention using the co-axel cord, and I was clueless. Couldn't figure out how to get it to work! Thanks for helpin out an old lady with no technical skills!
What do you mean it doesn't mention using the co axel cord? Did not it not come with that cord or does it only use RCA cords?
Cynthia Jones You can either hook up the RCA yellow and white cables to the front inputs or the rf swirly screw in cable cord in the back. I recommend you use the front rca inputs if you wish to record programs. Also, you can still use the vcr part even without a converter box. Hope this will help.
Thank you so much! You explained everything so clearly and perfectly, that we resuscitated our old portable black and white TV. So awesome.
I am so happy I found this video. my boyfriend just bought me at flea market a table top RCA victor Tv I was sOOOOO happy cause he knows I love vintage items Ur video is exactly what I was looking for omgoodness thank u can't wait to buy this pieces I need
I have a samsung television from 1986 its similar to yours, I didnt know you needed a digital converter to pick up channels (I'm only 22) but thanks for the vid man, you learn something everyday.
I really miss that old model tv set even it brings back memories. Btw...thank you very much for your very exciting video presentation and for me I'll prefer this old tv model
I have question. I have 1982 samsung bt 316 it has single wire antenna and another antenna deal that shaped like circle. Ok The adapter i bought like you specified has the 2 mount spots where wires off antenna mount into it. If my antenna just has one wire I just hook the one in? the other antenna wire is down on the jack in back and has only like 1 inch slack. can that other wire remain there? please advise.
Also I have the adapter coaxial so I can attach it to the coaxial cord due to it being an older and portable tv. But my question is on the converter box do I place it in the antenna outlet on the furthest left or where it says tv input right next to it ? It's also a Bentley Tv & a Sony Mega Watchman. They both have the "Ext Ant" option for antenna as well.
Do you mind directing me towards the type of converter that you have for your antenna. I have a 1975 zenith chromacolor tv set. I just need the name or website that I can find that special type of converter for the antenna to the cable box thanks.
I got a question you may be able to help me out with. Or not, worth a try. I have Dish but I want one of these because I want to get some local channels Dish does not have. My Dish is not connected directly to the old TV though, it's this weird thing where it's coming from a receiver from another room. But anyway can a digital converter coexist with previously mentioned DIsh connection?
+Python Fatal you can use your dish dvr as a converter box
+rannz8 I get his question (got the same setup). He has no Dish DVR on that specific TV though, so using it as a converter box won't work. Fatal, you've got a UHF thing going. Yes, the digital converter box should be able to work regardless of the Dish hookup on the second TV because (I assume, and assume I am right) that your Dish is connected from the TV 1 receiver via coaxial cable. Simply connect the digital video converter to the second TV (with Dish already connected via cable) using those color coded RCA cables. That way it affects the second TV in no way and you just switch inputs.
I have a Visio high definition tv and the convertor box like you are using. How do I hook this up? Dish is locking out channel 11 or CBS and with Dish we can't watch that channel. My only choice is RCA cables and I have gotten a AV2HDMI adapter to go from RCA to HDMI to plug in with from the convertor box. Will this work on the high definition TV?
You can use the red and white RCA jacks directly on the back of the converter box and connect that directly to a stereo. If you mean about the coax then yes, it doesn't have built in MTS (stereo encoder) built into the converter so it's coax is mono only.
My TV is frozen. Do I need to replace the converter box?
Another thing worth mentioning is that if you have a stereo TV or VCR with RCA(red/white/yellow) inputs, you will only get sound output in stereo by hooking up the box with those cables. In that case you want to find the A/V input mode on your TV or VCR.
How to hook up converter box plus digital adapter, dvd and vcr units?
You mean hooking up a dvd recorder/player, and a VCR? Well, if you want to record the programming coming off your converter box, you can either use the RCA yellow, white, red plug hook ups on the back of the unit, or plug your converter box's coax/cable connection output to the input of the VCR or DVD recorder/player that you want to have hooked up in between the tv and the converter box.
Just bought a "Spirit of 76" TV at a garage sale yesterday. Going to use this information to use it!!
Wow the retro nostalga is real! Great vid.
UHF LOOP or a DTV antenna is fantastic for converter box.
Does anyone know how to hook the converter box up to a portable tv ? Since my portable tv has a built in antenna would I just connect the coaxial cord from the converter box to the tv then I'll be okay?
Are the instructions pretty much the same if you want to hook the converter up to a VCR, DVD recorder, etc.?
I just got a converter box today. I am going to route it to my sling box. Do I need to scan for over the air signals?
What a connection for converter box, vhs player
to tv . What’s the hook fir that? Thanks
That's really good NTSC picture on that old tv..... way better than the flat screens :-)
Outstanding how to video. thanks
Interesting that there are still technologies that bring CRT TVs back to life!
They are called freeview box in the uk
GREAT tutorial! Thank you!
I'm using a Craig DTV tuner with a Sony TV, but it's not working, still? What's up with that?
So you can't use the already on the TV connected antenna to the converter box to convert it to digital? I would've thought you could..... nvm rewatched video and can but need the little spade coaxial adapter
Not certain, the plaque for the DOB was never stamped. Neither was the internal one.
Can you recommend the most efficient, durable and long lasting digital to analog converter box brand available today? I've had a number of Chinese made ones that go bad in just weeks? Thanks!!
Excellent ! Very informative, thanks for the post.
I have an early 80s Quasar TV, this gave me the information I need to bring it back to life!
Can you tell what type this is? I tried to by found the other generic TV Antennas but didn't find this one.
Plese tell me how to connect LG Metro TV to mobilw phone .we purchased on 1997 it has not mouth loke our charger pin which is going inside mobile.it does not have HDMI...it has only AV,OUDIO,AV1 something like this.
please reasearch and solve my Problam.
Any adapter will work, though some work better than others. Digital Stream is one of the better ones. All you truly need is a UHF for most channels, and VHF antenna for the VHF ones. I believe a powered antenna will help, as long as it has both bands. "Digital antennas" are nothing but glorified UHF antennas, which doesn't always help. For example, here in Orlando, channel 2 WESH is actually VHF despite being digital.
Now I know, thank you my friend. Hey I love the older tv,antiques (:
What type of converter is that and where can I buy it? 😕
Tht is perfect that you collected between the old and new technology
You should be able to get an RF modulator for it, or if anything use a VCR to act as an RF modulator. I'm not in Britain, so I'm not familiar with VCR's there if they are the same as ours, but I'd assume they'd be able to modulate too.
i like your old tv question do you still get channels on your tv with your converter
Very true. I would have gone into that, but I didn't feel like pulling that all out, haha. But yes, you should go through the VCR if you have one, so you can use both, and tape the TV too.
would that depend what area your in or is it standard?
Helpful video for me thank you to get my converter box working for my old TV
I have a question, so I have an old Sony solid state portable TV but the only problem is that it doesn't have any inputs on it. It only has an input for an external antenna. Is this possible to connect to the converter box and if so how would I go about doing that? Thanks
You'll need an adapter for the external antenna jack to the "RF Out" of the modulator.
With a TV that has only one ANT-IN, would using a splitter so that I can have both this antenna box and a cable service connected, reduce the picture quality greatly?
Yes because that's not the way splitters are supposed to be used. You would be attenuating the antenna. You would be using the splitter as a combiner. What you need is an AB coaxial switch box.
What if it has a HDMI output on the back of the converter? can you just plug that into your smart tv (if you have one) and then just plug in the antenna? I'm trying to record shows when I am gone and I found a DVR that has a high resolution recording function.
This is beyond the scope of the intent of this video. If you have a smart TV, you don't need an adapter for over the air antenna. If it's for a DVR, just get a new one, you are way over complicating things.
Correct, most are UHF.
It was easier for me to not hookup my bowtie antenna for this, as I have a weird combo balun for it.. Then again, I may remake this video with it, as it's more practical.
What if you have an RCA Model AFR 057 S it's a radio/black and white tv is this concept available?
I LOVE YOUR TV MAN!. THESES TV ARE BETTER THEN DIGTAL TV's

Kindly tell.. If this will work with VHF TV as well
your videos are super useful
Thanks for the help man getting a Teac HDB850 HD Set Top Box
Can i hook up that antenna? Thanks for the help in replying!!!
Great Vid,
would any DTA work? Ive got one brand new that my parents cable company sent but they dont need because they have digital receiver. I want to hook up to a digital antenna but i have a TV from the 90s (newer than the one in your vid).
Thanks
Once again, a cap may have went. You would be best to replace them. It may work. But in all honesty, these things are so cheap now these days it's better to just get a replacement. Digital Stream are one of the better ones.
I have an old analog TV hooked up to a converter box what is the best way to get RUclips on my TV with other different apps
Roku
Thanks! Just purchased mine today.
thank you so much!
Great video. That's a nice Samsung set. I wouldn't call it "antique," but somewhat vintage.
Please does anyone know the name of the ingredients?
Can you get local channels without a converter box? I also just came across an old TV similar to this. It also has a UHF which i have no idea how to use lol
Unfortunately, no. Those days are over so you do need a converter box.
also use UHF modulator for Japanese and US TV sets, set VHF channel to U and tune UHF CHANNELS.
This telly is similar to my 1984 48cm Palsonic 488 model with electronic tuner. Only has Pal coax socket for input.I saw it has a Samsung tube and speaker, etc inside.Interesting.Thanks.
how many channels dose it get?
Thank you for this video. What's the loud noise scratchy I'm hearing? More of a loud humming sound.
Also, if you have a VCR connected to your old TV you want to connect the cable going out from the box to the back of your VCR instead of your TV. That way you can still use the VCR for watching pre-recorded tapes and can also use the DTV converter box to tune and record channels with the VCR.
I had that exact setup in my old bedroom once upon a time.
Hope this idea works for my 1953 Zenith tv, I reworded it because the original cord was bad and the screen lights up and there's that buzzing sound
If the TV is working properly, yes it will work. RF is RF, and in America, channel 3 is the same frequency it's always been. You'll just need the matching transformer. As for buzzing, you'll want to check caps on a set that old, and if it only happens with certain graphics on the screen, that's actually normal. Older sets with very sharp graphics do cause a buzz.
Where did u get that tv from
Where do you get that Ariel that clips on the tv?
I wonder if there is a way to modulate more than one channel to analog to get into the tv 🤔
Yes, there were some RF modulators that were multi RCA in, multi channel out.
i need the codes fo r my Ge remote for my do convented box
Thank you! You were a life saver!
hi..I have a problem hooking up my old TV on my converter @ my lake lot..how can I send you pics of my converter and TV?
Donna Blanchard jh
i like that tv do you know what year it's from
Oh cool. This looks so simple and easy. Hmmm. Creative stuff.😊👍.
I know it’s 2020 now but I’m hoping I can resurrect a 1977 Panasonic black and white. I’m guessing it’s 30 ohms. What is the type of transformer I would need?
Thanks for uploading. Now, 2 years after you made this, do you recommend that particular converter box or something else?
+James Walsh I still prefer this converter. I tried another one that was ultra cheap and it acted like it too, shutting off and turning itself on, etc.
+Brandon MacEachern Thanks for that info.
Hey sir what is the different & why they make 300 ohms & 75 ohms? Now I know why my toshiba tv I can't find the 75 ohm connector in the back or side of a tv.
300 ohms is the two screw terminals, and 75 ohms is the coaxial terminal. If your TV is from the 90's or above, you will have only 75 ohms to worry about.
Quick question. What kind of tv is that?
i have the same concerter box i have a question
Just hooked up my converter box and I cant get it off the program screen. I have read the book and I hate to say it but I DONT GET IT. Not sure why im not getting this but please help!
What is the converter make and model?
You change the channels in the digital TV box or in the TV? the TV must always be in the 3 channel?
LookingMercury3D Yes, the digital box changes the channels, and the TV must be on 3 or 4, depending what you set the box to, for an output channel.
Ok.. It is basic like a CATV box, i have not used it because my LCD TV have is own DTV decodifier inside, just plug in the antenna and ready
Then you don't need it at all, why ask this question then? lol If you have a DTV, anything regarding a DTV converter is moot.
Curiosity.. That's all
Brandon MacEachern Orlando, Florida
Do different areas have different Chanel's (like depending if you live near a big city) because since before the analogue shout down, 2009, we could never see any Chanel's on the tv with one of those antenas.
Every area will always have different channel lineups. It's broadcast, and depends which transmitters you are near.
Here in Kuala Lumpur we will shift to Terrestrial DTV in 2014 as the transition works wayy too slow. Btw how many channels you got via terrestrial DTV in your area?
Where did u buy that small antenna?
Awesome set
What model is your TV antenna?
I want one of these with a headphone output as well as the rca. Do any exist that have headphone outputs?
No, but you could get RCA to headphone adapters.
I know what to do, but I am not getting a picture just snow, its a 1987 Emerson ecr139
I also have my play station connected to it.
I have a 1950's tv in my room and it works nice with the digital box
Post a video of it
TimmyTheUnicorn Prove it,it is not possible there are no more analog signal broadcasting in the tv air wave.100% all digital now.
TimmyTheUnicorn If you have cable tv not another story.
Sorry though you said without a digital box.
He said he was using a digital box, he has nothing to prove, he's already using his converter as Timmy said in his post.
Thank you very helpful
i have old model tv. so not have color cord pin (yellow, white, red pin) in tv. how to connect tv to dvd player.
RF? You need an RF modulator.
what if i have a tube television? is there any specifics to be done other than what is shown?
Well in the video I was using a tube television, so just do as I do. If you have only 300 ohms inputs, I'd just go ahead and get a 75/300ohm matching transformer as shown in the video, you will need one of those.
ok thank u just got the thing working today and its friggin huge XD
***** I bet it's heavy too. I love older sets, they are work horses. I have tried upgrading, but LCD's just don't have the charm, or character, and they also haven't been the most reliable. I'll keep my old set until I can't get parts anymore. I replaced the flyback in this TV and that repair has held up for quite a few years without so much as a single problem.
nice and it is heavy its maybe 3ft wide and 2ft tall roughly and its METAL got so many vacuum tubes in it it was near impossible to turn on
Im trying to hook up converter box...need help..Where do I put the 3 cords from box to tv--red yellow and white
If your TV has the composite AV ports, they should be labeled input, just plug it into there and switch your TV to the correct inputs.. They are color coded, so yellow goes to yellow, red to red, and white to white. If your TV doesn't have these, then just use the coaxial connection like I used. If your TV only has yellow and white, just leave red disconnected.
Brandon MacEachern it has component 1--component 2- video 1-----program out
tku for your help:>)
Where did you buy the antenna
