On the night of February 17, 2017, a top female actor in Kerala was kidnapped and sexually assaulted by six hired criminals. Dileep, a superstar actor in Kerala, is alleged to have masterminded the night. The crime initiated in Kerala a Weinstein-scale movement that predated the global #MeToo movement.
In our 11-chapter saga, The News Minute looks at how one night pushed Kerala to the edge, almost to the cusp of a much needed change. Yet, the women did not get the coverage that their counterparts in the West got. Even in India, those outside Kerala knew little about the extent of the rot.
In this conversation, Dhanya Rajendran and Nidhi Suresh talk about what exactly happened, why the case did not get the coverage it deserved, and the process of reporting on this case.

I remember hearing about this when it happened. Our family used to watch classic malayalam movies which starred Dileep all the time like CID moosa, we've not put on any of his work ever since. What a disgusting act. More of this misogyny needs to be brought to light, it must be purged from our society. Malayalee actresses also deserve the spotlight no matter the skin colour or caste, it's weird that most of our "superstars" are men from privileged backgrounds. Incidents like this just highlight the need for hard and honest conversations about the state of our society.

I believe the kind of humor he peddles in his movies, the rapey kind, shows his character, you can say that it’s the script writer or director who makes these choices, but I refuse to believe that he doesn’t have a say . One of My relativeis is a police in Ernakulam he is also the one who handle this case and he has seen the sexual abuse video in which the abusers have mentioned why they are doing this but judgement came favourable to Dileep because there is no proof of eye witness that Dileep has done this. Court Judgement doesn't mean it should be true all the time and even Dileep ex wife knows about this.

No comments on Kavya Madhavan, for some reason I see her as a person with split personality. In one interview, she adored Manju Warier, and now I wonder what her motive was or is. One thing is clear, she is definitely a good actor, even in real life. I doubt her to be loyal towards Dileep.

@@tanvitripathi3997 Manju Warrier's old roles were really awesome. She was a cutie. After the divorce she came back and made a mark with many ventures. I was in school back then. That was a transition era in Malayalam. New concepts, stories, methods were getting adopted and I saw over the years how our small industry became the Malayalam industry everyone knows and talks about today.

A case that is pushed by the cops where in which most of the evidence was confirmed to be fabricated. The points like, actress was in drunk state when the cops came to take her when issue was reported at Lal's residence and was avoiding to do medical post such claims etc etc...Above all, believing an individual who has a criminal record when all the evidence that was claimed to be available was not available to produce in court... However the discussion had Misandry and blaming men.
Firstly majority of Keralite feel Dileep is the perpetrator of the crime. But as a journalist it is your task to report both side. However you only reported the lady’s side and quoted versions of stories narrated by her and friends. You should have met people supporting Dileep and asked for story. Also you went to a promotion event and try to speak to Dileep which didn’t materialise and now the allegation of misbehaviour from part of a male colleague. It also lacks the perspective of other side. You should acknowledge that there are ladies acting with him, who might not be finding it difficult, then where is that perspective?
Why “Feminichi”? These actresses started blatant Misandry and started generalising all male. This in a society will have ripple effect and men then had to call out this toxic feminists. Toxic masculinity and feminism are wrong. These new age crusaders of feminism are borderline arrogant and was hypocritical in their behaviour. Their actions is what made men stay away from female Co stars due to fear of their good name being tarnished if she is not happy for any reason. This perspective is lacking.

@@stephaitana3014 well K hema committee report infact very clearly states women even before entering malayalam movie industry are demanded for sexual favours for roles....it does not state only few men...they have worded in such a way that all women undergo that..isnt it not rampant then? Meaning all those men who work in movie industry are of the same nature ....
Is there a specific process by which we can identify men who commit abuse vs those who don't...can all women have that ability to differentiate..I don't think so.
It's better to teach young girls to be beware of all men irrespective of their intentions...instead of blindly trusting them.
