  • Week 3 and 4 were tough. I started to feel like I was drowning in work and the amount of characters and grammar to memorize felt so overwhelming. Luckily the environment is still super positive and the Teachers, Students and Staff are amazing! At the beginning, we tried to have "study groups" of friends who would study together, but everyone is at their own level and pace.
At this point, most of us have gotten into the habit of studying solo, or with maybe one or two other people at times, just to check things over with.
I had many times where I would work on stuff on my own, but surrounded by others such as in the special area of the library, cafe, or in the common areas of the residence halls. It's nice to be working with others around you, motivating you. Although I definitely had my fair share of staying up till 2 or 3am in my room or other locations just trying to finish everything the best I could.
My third and fourth week at Middlebury's 2 Month Summer Chinese Immersion Program as a Level 3 Student! This video is meant to document my experience as a Level 3 Chinese Student. This episode features less of studying, and more on the fun things we'd experience in this crazy Chinese Vermont. (Also note that my Chinese is not perfect, but I hope you'll see an improvement week after week as this series progresses!)
This episode concludes at the mid-point all language school party where we were allowed to speak English for the first time in 4 weeks! It was really a shock to the system, and I think some people found it difficult to switch back to Chinese at the end of the night. Once you leave the party, you're not allowed to speak English again until the conclusion of the program.
This program is a serious investment of time AND money, so I wanted to make this series to help those who are interested learn first-hand what the experience is all about.
Catch Episode 1 here: • My First Week At Middl...
This is actually my second time in the program and took place Summer 2019. The first time I went to Middlebury's Summer Chinese Immersion Program was the summer of 2015 when I was a Level 2 Student. The different levels are as follows from least to most advanced: Level 1, 2, 2.5, 3, 4. There is a large jump between each level, which is why a Level 2.5 exists.
I thoroughly enjoyed my experience both times, although this program is NOT for the faint of heart. You cannot communicate in any other language than the target language (Chinese) the entire time, and the 2 month course is equal to an entire academic year of experience at a University Language Program.
Any questions, please comment on the video below! I'd be happy to answer them as best as I can!
Episode 4 will be coming. Stay tuned!

Thanks so much for enjoying the video! It's hard to get good footage when you're so busy studying in a tough program like this. I did my best with the editing. :/
My mother tongue is English. How about you?

@@o_felipe_reis That's awesome, so many languages. I speak some Spanish and can understand more than I can speak, also know some Hindi and am currently learning to read Korean.
Did you do any immersion programs, or did you learn in school, or were self-taught?

Hey Ed, do you think its worth doing the Middlebury program or travelling to china for 7-8 week classes? What motivated you to do the Middlebury program instead?

I've done less intensive classes in China twice. One was a 3 month program and one was 6 months. The Middlebury Chinese immersion summer program was better than both of those. The reason I say that is because you are in a 24/7 Chinese environment. All of your activities, meals, your living environment, everything is all in Chinese. When I was actually in China, I found it difficult to actually befriend Chinese people and spent most of my time with other foreigners. If you care about learning the language as fast and efficiently as possible, go with the Middlebury summer program, if you want to experience China itself then go there. You get exposure but it's not as intense as Middlebury. And it is INTENSE. Middlebury is not for the feint of heart or those who aren't really committed to learning Chinese.

Do you also attend Middlebury College? or did you just participate in the summer intensive program?

I attended the summer program twice, I've never been a Middlebury undergad. Once while I was an undergrad at a different college and once right after graduating college.
