I have always found the friendship between Legolas and Gimli to be the most beautiful and heartwarming element of the entire story! While Frodo and Sam are more soulmates or brothers, of sorts, their relationships stems from one that was already established as kinsman and as neighbors. However, with Gimli and Legolas, their friendship is rooted in their courage to overcome great disparity between cultures and centuries of suspicion and resentment. For such deep devotion loyalty and love to grow and be sustained over a very so many long decades as they did is truly a remarkable and wondrous and beautiful thing. And it is a noble example for all of us to learn from.
I consider myself privileged to have seen them in theaters. They were (and still are) a unique cinematic event that expanded horizons and blew minds. It’ll be many an Age before we see their like again.
I have to admit, as someone who doesn't cry easily, I can barely keep it together at the end of ROTK. Just Frodos look back at the others as he gets on the boat says it all. He's smiling, but he's broken, he would never heal again. And Sam when he realises that Frodo is leaving. It's a good movie when it doesn't end as you want it. The main character never really recovers from what happened. And how the four hobbits sit in the Green Dragon, now completely out of place in such a happy and safe environment. The events that happened to each changed them.
Perhaps the only thing more touching and heartfelt to me, besides Gimli and Legolas' BFF status, was the Lady Galadriel being so kind to Gimli when others weren't. Great video as always-refreshingly wholesome soothing content.
This really hits home. On Thanksgiving, my group of friends lost one of our own to brain cancer. The works of Tolkien have been a part of our lives since we were old enough to read the stories and understand them. We now have to move on through life without the "Aragorn" of our group. I hope that anyone who reads this, really takes the time to cherish the people that they love and hold in high regard.
"And what would a Dwarf ask from an Elf?" "Nothing, Milady. For I have seen the beauty of the Lady of Golden Woods and will never again find any gem as beautiful as she" "Bold words from a Dwarf, yet compliment i shall take. Never again shall those among my kin call Dwarves Greedy. But I shant let a guest leave without a gift. So what would you ask?" "I would not ask anything. But since you demand me to pose, I shall ask thee for a single lock of golden hair" "And what would you do with this strand?" "Keep it safe as an heirloom of my house. I shall bring it home and craft a box of the finest jewels the Lonely Mountain can produce, to safely keep the strand for it is the greatest treasure among the sun" *and so Galadriel produced a knife and cut three strands of her hair and gave it to the dwarf*
I love these two quotes between the two friends. Tolkien loved this kind of parallelism, and it shows how solid and, well, comforting their friendship was by the time they got to Rohan. They were aware of their differences as members of two different races, but they recognize that their friendship overcomes that. . GIMLI: “You are a Wood-elf, anyway, though Elves of any kind are strange folk. Yet you comfort me. Where you go, I will go." . LEGOLAS: "But you are a dwarf, and dwarves are strange folk. I do not like this place, and I shall like it no more by the light of day. But you comfort me, Gimli, and I am glad to have you standing nigh with your stout legs and your hard axe."
Gimli and Legolas were always my all-time favourite characters since my father read me and my brother books in early 90ies. There was something amazing because they constantly switch firing shots at each other with risking life for each other. Thanks for that great story. Watching this I'm a bit sad that in current they we still dont have proper game featuring Middle-Earth where I could find all of those LOTR characters.
Thanks for this, Yoystan. Truly theirs is a friendship forged in battle. In fact, their bond is why I enjoyed the banter between Gimli and Legolas in the Jackson films. Millennia of distrust and animosity can’t be overcome overnight, so their kill count contest, drinking game and many other small scenes helped them find common ground. They have more in common than either would’ve admitted when they first met (honor, loyalty, skill as warriors, etc.). Which makes their last lines at The Black Gate all the more powerful, as I’m sure many can agree.
So glad you made this. The pol was interesting and telling. Loved the dynamics of the chemistry between Gimli and Legolas. To say nothing of Gimli's friendship and respect for the Lady Galadriel that would gain him the singular honor of being able to sail to Valinor with Legolas.
This is why I have a hard time deciding which race I like more between the Elves and the Dwarves cuz of how awesome Legolas and Gimlis friendship is! 👍👍and thank you for these great videos during these crazy times we're all living in! 👍they put smiles on my face, especially the music intros!
I am so sorry, my friend. My heart goes out to you in this sorrowful time. I am sure that your friendship, and the memory of your friend, will never fade away, and shall last strong beyond even these circles of the world.
I’m late but RIP to your friend and many more happy years to you telling others of your friendship with your late friend. They say we only truly die when the last person who knew us died and our name isn’t spoken anymore. So keep speaking their names :)
@@Cinerary it’s surely been a while but I still tear up from time to time. Thank you for the condolences. But we should be really praying for his family. They will never fully cure from this.
I always imagined Gimli reaching Valinor with Legolas and meeting his race's creator Aulë, his Mahal and learning more about the craft of Earthly elements.
This reminds me of a section from Sun Tzu: "The skillful tactician may be likened to the SHUAI-JAN. Now the SHUAI-JAN is a snake that is found in the Ch`ang mountains. Strike at its head, and you will be attacked by its tail; strike at its tail, and you will be attacked by its head; strike at its middle, and you will be attacked by head and tail both. Asked if an army can be made to imitate the SHUAI-JAN, I should answer, Yes. For the men of Wu and the men of Yueh are enemies; yet if they are crossing a river in the same boat and are caught by a storm, they will come to each other's assistance just as the left hand helps the right." Shared conflict and peril sometimes has a way of fostering cooperation between even those who are in opposition to each other along with the experience developed through these trying events. With this in common, even affection can develop over time.
In bootcamp, this is how our RDC's get recruits from different backgrounds and cultures to become one under a new military mindset. We're too busy being angry with our RDC, we don't have time to be angry with one another. On the contrary, the RDC often creates problems for us that we must solve together, even in spite.
I imagine them arriving in Valinor. Galadriel is there to greet them, and as Gimli steps ashore appears Aule, bursting with pride at meeting his courageous and noble child. Knowing what must be, Gimli looks back at Legolas, and runs back to embrace his friend a final time before Aule leads him to Mandos, but they will meet again at Dagor Dagorath and the re-making of Arda.
I've been quite depressed for many various reasons but your telling and understanding of this epic story is such a calming of my storm and I hope you know that you have my eternal respect not just for what your story telling has done for me but what I know it does for others
Thank you for your content. No one has made me more interested or taught me so much about Tolkien's universe than you. Stumbling upon your channel rekindled my desire to explore this universe from when I was first introduced in middle school. I am much older now and thankfully can better understand his works, and have been listening to them on Audible. From this point I would concur that Rob Ingles does a great job at narrating them. I hope you are doing well, wherever you are in Middle Earth.
I really would love to see the friendship between Turin and Beleg. Even more than Gimli and Legolas, that friendship between two people of different races, shapes ALL the events of the Age they belonged to.
It has been a long time, my old friend! I have noticed that you're incredible channel has produced many more great videos since my absence, and that you have even been nominated by the Tolkien Society for having the best online content for the wonderful world of Middle-Earth. Congrats on that great achievement!!! And even if you don't end up winning (even though you more than deserve too), just being nominated is noteworthy enough! I hope you are safe and well in these troubling times, and that, like the powerful friendship of Legolas and Gimil, you have great friends to keep you company!!! :)

I love all your videos but this is likely my favourite so far, superb job! I love both these characters and the friendship that is built between them is stronger than Mithril and its great to hear the story of their friendship during and after the war of the Ring expertly told. I bet many long ages of jokes, contests and exploring continued between the two great friends in Valinor.
lol i used legs and gim as character examples of Rivals for my AP lit kids :) primarily becausei wanted to show how rivals can also be companions.. because they had a conception that rivals were just the antag and protag..
This is a great video to appreciate legolas and gimli’s unlikely friendship. I like many characters above these two but I like how you painted both races and characters and showing them to overcome their differences to become one of the greatest friendships of the story.
i literally was a little emotional hearing their story from the books for the first time since i was a child. i share a simlar friendship with a few people from when i was younger and i still keep in touch with today and they always are there if i need support and vice versa. i think this is a story of true friendship and that true friends are always with even though might afare and that friends are true just are just as much family as our own kin. So to those who reads this as Sam Wise once said when the sun shines it will shine all the clearer, a quote which i think very relevant to our current time. thanks for reading i hope some of this was helpful I want to huge thanks ot the men of the west channel for making this video as it lightened my day after what and undoubtedly many over have been through in the roller coaster that has been nearly the past two years.
Thank you for making this. This video is a grand exemplar of need and awesomeness of friendship. Legolas and Gimli are proof that we can understand and even appreciate eachother.
Definitely, when one considers this friendship as well as the entirety of the fellowship and the efforts of the men of the west. It shows how people of different social, cultural, or ethnic backgrounds, when forced to band together can be great allies and can overcome differences and strife. This being said the Lord of the Rings can be considered to be a tale of not only war but a positive side of society wherein multiculturalism and the overall effort leads toward the establishment of better relations that were previously hardened in the past as well as a better social future. Thus, a modern story that can be well applied to contemporary societies.
Friendship is a positive and constructive thing there is. Competitions and powerlusts damage its innocent nature when the one loses the sight and its colour. Thank you Yoystan for valuable videos about Tolkien and his universe. P. S: You might consider it as a birthday present when surprized ;)
Oh, drat! I seem to have lost my ring?! Have any of you seen it, perchance? It's an unadorned gold ring. It's unexceptional, nevertheless, it's precious to me... yesss, prrrreciousss...
Just subbed. Love your channel. Man, after these years my love for Star Wars died and game of thrones failed. I always come back to middle earth. Both the movies and books are beyond anything. Middle-Earth will always be number 1, nothing has even come close
I keep finding myself coming back to this video.. I love your work and and your interpretations of Tolkien. If more people found meaning meaning in the written word as you and I and some others some others, then the world would be a merrier place. Please keep making videos like this. In this day in age I think it's it's more of what we need. And I hope and pray others come to see what I see in Tolkiens writings and your videos interpreting them. You sir are doing a service to mankind. I hope you keep doing this till your dying day.
I knew someone would remember Legolas and Gimli discussing the different layers of masonry in the walls of Mines Tirith, and how far the skills of the once mighty Numenoreans had declined into The Third Age.
I love these videos just in general but this video especially at this moment in time is very inspirational you did a great job!!! I'm new to all of this of course I've seen the movies but this is awesome I've seen this three times and it's just great really great 😊 👍💯💜
I feel like the friendship of Legolas and gimli ended the feud of elf and dwarf or at the very least had a hand in the two races ending their feud, and to all of you who miss your friends and families in this time of quarantine I feel like this is like the one of the crisises that happened in the legendarium that brought much despair but through hope they prevailed and that is what we must keep alive in order to get through this hard time! "Bold words from a Dwarf, yet compliment i shall take. Never again shall those among my kin call Dwarves Greedy. But I shant let a guest leave without a gift. So what would you ask?"
"I would not ask anything. But since you demand me to pose, I shall ask thee for a single lock of golden hair"
"And what would you do with this strand?"
"Keep it safe as an heirloom of my house. I shall bring it home and craft a box of the finest jewels the Lonely Mountain can produce, to safely keep the strand for it is the greatest treasure among the sun"
*and so Galadriel produced a knife and cut three strands of her hair and gave it to the dwarf*
"Legolas, two already."
"I'm on seventeen."
"I will not be outscored by a pointy eared elf."
Where you go, I will go."
.
Gimli and Legolas. That's a friendship every person needs.
This is why I have a hard time deciding which race I like more between the Elves and the Dwarves cuz of how awesome Legolas and Gimlis friendship is! 👍👍and thank you for these great videos during these crazy times we're all living in! 👍they put smiles on my face, especially the music intros!
The Elves are elitist, smug, pointy-eared, arrogant, pampered assbutts. What's not to love?
@@tomaszwota1465 In short: Vulcans ...😉
THAT STILL ONLY COUNTS AS ONE!!!!!
Well in Gimli's defense the massive animal should only count as one
I am still laughing tears ...
My best friend recently passed away and your videos are making me more cheerful. Thank you for the content.
I am so sorry, my friend. My heart goes out to you in this sorrowful time. I am sure that your friendship, and the memory of your friend, will never fade away, and shall last strong beyond even these circles of the world.
May your friend Rest In Peace in Valinor...
Could you imagine if Mr. Tolkien passed away on the battlefields of the Great War? And how devoid our lives would be without this masterpiece?
Most beautiful friendship ever. Something we can all learn from.
Ended very sadly though.
@@MountainFisher Well, that was the Curse that was the main theme of the Narn. Morgoth saw that everything Turin touched turned to ash.
The problem is Turin was a needy emo boi with a savior complex. Legolas and Gimli are more evenly balanced.
Well done, my friend! Great video choice! One of the greatest stories of friendship to be found in all of Tolkien's works!
Thank you, my friend! I really appreciate it!
Hey, my friend! It is good to hear from you again! Thank you so much man, I really appreciate that! I couldn't do it without you all :)
@@MenoftheWest You're welcome, anytime!!! :)
This was a great vid. I truly enjoy the friendship and bond between the dwarf and elf. I honestly just love it! Its so good to see people talk about it once more. Keep on doing what you are doing man.
Aww, Thanks Mellon for calling us friends!!! You are probably the only friend, I hear from during this hard time!!!!
Legolas and Gimli: An Odd Friendship, between to races that hated each other, brought their races together!
Thanks for this Sweet Friendship Video Mellon...Until Helm's Deep's Spotlight Video, Marion Baggins Out...Reading!!!
Well consider this channel as the West Door to Khazad-dûm. Speak friend and enter. So thankfully Yoysten opens the door so often by speaking it for us
@@BigBWolf90 That's a nice way to put it!!!
Timuviel, I’ll always consider you a friend and look forward to a new video and ur posts. Lol. You had me at ‘Marion Baggins out!’ So funny. Be well.🤣
@@gobigblue6782 Thanks, Mellon!!! I just want to more stuff, but alas I can not! 😥
The biggest and best subplot of the books. Goes to show how you find real, true friends and how strong that bond can be and how it can lead to new wisdom, experiance and finally common ground.
An all time favorite, and definitely a go-to during those first days of Covid-19
Gimli: What’s happenin’ out there?
Legolas: Shall I describe it to you? Or would you like me to find you a box?
Gimli: 😆
Thank you for this heart-touching video. This ought to teach us that beyond our differences, we all are humans and can live in harmony.
This is a light greater than the Silmarills in the dark times we may be in for some time.
Thank you for posting these great videos they are truly an awesome release from the crazy world we are living in so thank you so much for doing this for us i truly appreciate it
Such a beautiful and timely retelling. Thank you for this.
Oh I can relax, my quarenteen fix Men of the West has posted!
A strange yet wholesome bond indeed is the friendship of legolas and gimli
I would have loved that Tolkien had written about Legolas and Gimli's voyages...
Legolas(with smug expression): "Final count, 41."
Gimli: 41 oh. Not bad fer a pointy eared Elvish princeling. I myself happen to be sitting handsomely on 43.
Bryant Wolford legolas shoots dead orc “43” ;)
@Amelia High (STUDENT) *looks aghast* He was twitching!
@@darkness-of-serenity1088 he was twitching...because he's got MY AXE EMBEDDED IN HIS NERVOUS SYSTEM!!!
My all time favourite quote from the movies, 'Don't tell the elf!!' Thanks for a great video.

Great videos man of the west..
Gandalf:
"Here at last, on the shores of the sea, comes the end of our Fellowship".
"I will not say, do not weep, for not all tears are an evil."
From unlikely allies to fire forged friends. Let it never go unsaid that the bitterness of the past cannot give way to the greater need for understanding and companionship as exemplified by these two
If I could boil down my love for LOTR into a single example, it would be the friendship of Gimli and Legolas
I'm sorry that your away from the people you love. Sending you a big hug and Thank You for your awesome job. Everything will pass just keep hopeful 💙 Lots of love for everyone.
Thank you Faith :) right back at you, my friend! Thank you for the hopeful comment!
This video, that I know will make me happy weep, is much needed!!
“Tell me a bedtime story....”. Thank you for this.
lol i used legs and gim as character examples of Rivals for my AP lit kids :) primarily becausei wanted to show how rivals can also be companions.. because they had a conception that rivals were just the antag and protag..
So happy to see this video
I’m not crying. You’re crying
I AM crying my friend
Keep up the great work, I love this channel so much :)
This is a great video to appreciate legolas and gimli’s unlikely friendship. I like many characters above these two but I like how you painted both races and characters and showing them to overcome their differences to become one of the greatest friendships of the story.
a shared quest with danger can often bring the most untrusted foes together and spur a friendship!
"That still only counts as one!" -Gimli
This was such a nice video.
i literally was a little emotional hearing their story from the books for the first time since i was a child.
i share a simlar friendship with a few people from when i was younger and i still keep in touch with today and they always are there if i need support and vice versa.
i think this is a story of true friendship and that true friends are always with even though might afare and that friends are true just are just as much family as our own kin.
So to those who reads this as Sam Wise once said when the sun shines it will shine all the clearer, a quote which i think very relevant to our current time.
thanks for reading i hope some of this was helpful
I want to huge thanks ot the men of the west channel for making this video as it lightened my day after what and undoubtedly many over have been through in the roller coaster that has been nearly the past two years.
Thank you for making this. This video is a grand exemplar of need and awesomeness of friendship. Legolas and Gimli are proof that we can understand and even appreciate eachother.
Thank you for this. You may have saved a life.
I know we’ve had our differences too, but I hope our friendship grows even beyond theirs
I was just watching Fellowship too! Perfect timing!
Thank you very much for this video!!! I sought this video along with the other about Gimli for so long!!! Thank you very much!!!
This was incredible man, the ending brought me to tears. Definitely will be keeping up with your channel from now on.
My favorite bromance ever
The same Gimli that he called a Goblin mutant lmao
Gimli- "Legolas, 2 already !"
Legolas- "im on 17!"
Gimli- "WHAT ILL HAVE NO POINTY ELF OUTSCORING ME!!"
Great vid! Love the friendship and the context within the books!
"Yet all Men make might come to naught at last..."
I knew someone would remember Legolas and Gimli discussing the different layers of masonry in the walls of Mines Tirith, and how far the skills of the once mighty Numenoreans had declined into The Third Age.
Thank you so much for this video, and for your efforts to enrich our lives with the lore we love at this time!
I love these videos just in general but this video especially at this moment in time is very inspirational you did a great job!!! I'm new to all of this of course I've seen the movies but this is awesome I've seen this three times and it's just great really great 😊 👍💯💜
Read the books (or listen on audible) please.
Wonderful video
Thank you
Great video Eoystan! Brought back fond memories of the book and the films, and how much this friendship still means to me.
This is the first video of yours that I watched and I LOVED IT SO MUCH!!!!
Awesome video Yoystan, such an unlikely and unbreakable friendship is definitely inspiring during times like this. Keep up the great work!
Because from the wise words of Aragorn “There is always hope!” Namarie everyone and be safe!
Anyone who is moved by Tolkien's works, like this, could be a friend of mine. Thank you for these videos.
I follow few "LORE" oriented channels focused on different worlds.
Your videos ore probably the best, good narration man!
