- Anime and manga fans are increasing world wide! Tokyo is at the center of it all so in this episode, John Daub and Patrick W. Galbraith, author of the Otaku Encyclopedia and Moe Manifesto head to Nakano Broadway and Mandarake, a famous manga shop.
This place is otaku heaven!
Here we discuss:
★ Why is manga and anime becoming more popular?
★ Dragon Ball Z GOKU vs. SUPERMAN
★ Anime vs. Manga
Is the book better than the movie?
We also look at some of Mandarake's collectable toys and some of the oldest manga available at the shop.
Next, we go to Asagaya and WAO Corporation's studio where they are making a crowd-funded anime production called Chuya-den.
Chuya-den, directed by Yoshiyuki “Yoshiko” Kaneko who studied animation under Taku Furukawa, the Japanese Animation Guru!
Chuya-den is using a new crowd-funding model for creating original anime. Connecting fans and creators to make original ideas is the key to the success of budding ideas and many young anime creators start in outfits like Chuya-den. Patrick and John look at the process from character creation to digitalizing and coloring in a small indie studio.

I wonder if John realized that he was holding a yaoi manga. XDD
asdfblah lol
asdfblah 😂😂
やおい
Ya lol I came here cause of that🤣
I don't want to think about that! (lol)
Japanese Animators are geniuses and super talented. I always feel that Japan is number one for animation.
So true !!!
Well, Disney animation was the inspiration for anime, and since then the west has heavily transitioned to 3D animation, which still requires much of the composition and design knowledge anyways. Japan's got some garbage animation works aswell.
well at least anime and manga are much more interesting than other garbage like disney fish hooks
REPLY
Jyanne Skye you'll find that some shows in America sometimes will have a studio in Japan or Korea to animate certain style they can't get in the US
If you like pretty pictures then yes.
But if you like movement and more expressive emotions then no.
Let's head to Nakano Broadway in Tokyo for one of Japan's biggest manga shops -- MANDARAKE!! After some kung fu and debating who would win in a fight between #Goku and #Superman we travel to WAOWORLD Anime Studio for a behind the scenes look at a new anime series being made.
If you love Japanese subcultures, this is going to be quite a ride!

Just found this show during a late night insomnia fueled RUclips session, and I really like it!
NinjaNeroRain Awesome! Really glad to hear that and hope you come back after the next insomnia attack. I've got some fun episodes planned for the summer!! Thanks for watching! -John
Dude, you have my dream job. I love exploring new places and making videos about them. You go into great depth too. Keep it up!
Dude, YOU have my dream job, going to the conventions, seeing a lot of cosplay...
What I love about Anime and Manga is the awesome concepts of the styles and the stories inside the shows and movies
Yeah
I would love to go to Japan and see this in person. "Japan is #1!"
NYCR It is quite a sight to see! The toys at Mandarake ... It was amazing to see so many interesting things like this. Just looking was worth the trip to Nakano!
Great episode of anime, it required a lot of work for the final making! Thank you very much! Love your videos!
Thank you so much john, I always coming back to this channel every week or month to check if there's a new episode :)
and make sure you have enough time to rest, so the quality won't reduce :D
.
.
sorry for my bad eng.
shinichixxxx THANK YOU! I'm trying really hard to keep episodes coming every two weeks. YES!! I spent the last 3 nights editing video for another project and need some rest before I start the next video about Oiran and Geisha in Asakusa! Rock 'n roll!! Can't wait to get the next show online. -John
3:55 He miss to tell that: "we got old customer and new customer."
Love this channel so much. I don't even mind the wait between videos with quality like this. The enthusiasm this guy has is infectious and I can't wait for more.
Brian Perkins Thanks! The feedback helps motivate me to keep quality as high as I can and def. keeps me motivated! Really really appreciate hearing from you, More fun stuff coming soon! -John
This is the first watching a portion of anime making on RUclips. This is great! Thank you bringing us some awesome information!
Man I love this channel. You guys always do really high quality work!
VTnumb I am really really happy to hear it!! Guys? (It's just me :P -- WAO RYU has some other really nice shows like Kawaii Pateen too) I'm fortunate to have some great friends with unique experience who co-report and sometimes even hold the camera. Patrick was an awesome co-reporter for this! Can't do it all alone but most of it is just me, a camera, an iMac with some juice and an idea. There's a nice guy at WAO who's helping with comments I miss, translations and coming up with fantastic ideas to make the show more popular. I'll keep trying to make fun episodes. Always appreciate hearing from you VTnumb! -John
Another OUTSTANDING video, John! Broadway is probably my favorite place in all of Japan! So awesome of you to do an episode there.
My Life Japan Thanks Alan! Love your latest episode as well. You're putting in more work with the editing than I am, I think! Many don't know but Nakano Broadway is also one of the best places for video camera equipment!! -- someone told me that one. lol -John
Love your videos man! Great job keep it up!!
shane hopsana Thank you!! -John
The Mangas, the Toys, The Anime - what an amazing overload of bliss in this video!! So so so cool!
I really enjoyed this video....ok I love them all but this one was awesome.
Awesome vid. Can't wait for the next episode!
Emile Jacob Editing it right now :) -John
I'm going to say it in every video until it happens. Where's the kickstarter to get more episodes more often? The quality and content of this show more than deserves it.
joshua bethel That's always an option :) but I think if I make more than 2 a month, it becomes less special.
These aren't video blogs where I can just shoot and edit on the run. I love trying to go more in depth and find a story or unique angle. There's no shortcut. It takes time. I create every episode myself, often with a little help from very good friends so it's not just me talking all the time. There are so many other points of view which need to be heard.
But yes!! If I could make more content, that would be awesome!! Having a team to help rather than doing it yourself is how this show will survive long term. I can't thank you enough for the support by just watching each time Joshua and really appreciate the push!! -John
Well, regardless of what direction you decide to go with this show we all still love it and will continue to support you. (However I will still be rooting for more!) Other than just likes and subscribing is there a way to support the show? ei shirts, coffee mugs etc.
joshua bethel Thanks for asking! Not yet. I'll be thinking about this in June on how we can make more shows and/or share the ONLY in JAPAN vibe. I'm working on a book with a different take on visiting Japan :) really REALLY appreciate the interest and you've gotten me thinking on what more I can do! (Thank you for that too!) -John
Well I will definitely be keeping my ear to the ground for that update! Even if the shows are only monthly, making them longer would be awesome.
+ONLY in JAPAN did the movie happen?
Another amazing videos, thanks John!
doogle891 Thank you!! -John
"Well, then! Take this! One Piece!" ... pulls Oda's WANTED out of the shelf :D xD
fun video to watch john! appreciate the hard work into making these!
SteelBalla I appreciate you taking the time to not just watch but comment :) Thank you!! -John
It's our studio tour!! John Thank you very much!! -YOSHIKO(Kaneko-san)
CHUYA-DEN -To regain the missing sun- YES!! I really enjoyed the visit with Patrick. Thank you for giving us a chance to see your project up close and very VERY excited to see the progress on CHUYA-DEN!! Will keep checking it out. -John

Hello there. Your videos are amazing. Simply amazing!
TabiEats Thank you very much! I'm really glad to hear you're enjoying it. I'm having so much fun making these :) -John
Ok
@@thesonofdarkness936 Ok
I want to become a manga artist and this video just inspired me even more to pursue being one. Thank you.
You should never give up on the dream! Never before have the tools been there to do it! It's the story that really sucks people in. It how all my friends have become addicted by certain manga. -John
Interesting
That was so cool! I've always heard people call Mandarake by the name Mandrake, like those screaming plants in Harry Potter. I heard it so much I never paid attention to the actual spelling until now, but I'm just happy I know what it's proper name is really. That studio tour was awesome! I've always wanted to see in a working studio! Oh 2d hand drawings how I love you! The hard work and effort is so wonderful, if done right that is.
Eszra Right! It's easy to mistale the name MANDARAKE. I still don't know what it actually means ...
Glad you enjoyed the studio tour. They work really hard to make their vision come to life!! Loved seeing the process. Always great to hear from you Eszra! -John
I'm loving this vid John. Keep them coming! - David
David Dupree Thanks David! Really appreciate it :) -John
Kudos to the teams who bring out such amazing animes
Yeah
Thanks for another interesting video and the assortment of camera angles!
talesnine Keeping it fun :) I'd write diagonally but got to stay inside the box with these YT comments. Nice to hear from you! -John
Thank you so much for another great video!!
Tangy Orange Thank you!!! -John
Another winner John!! Your videos on manga happen to be my favorite haha! Can't wait to see more. Soo happy about the 2 videos a week!
nassirk Awesome! It's fun diving into so many different topics. One episode Wasabi, the next -- Manga & Anime! Then we switch to Oiran and Geisha! Gonna be hard to always produce food ones but I'll give my best. Thanks for the comment!! -john
awesome video i think i see this video before still love it every min of it
Jose Garcia Thank you! I am really glad you enjoyed it! -John
your videos are awesome I watch every signal one of them when I have time
I'm so excited for this anime to come out! I wanna watch it!
i always love watching your videos :)
Always love the videos! especially anything otaku haha
ThatOneSceneDude Thank you!! It was so much fun having many "academic" debates with Patrick about manga and anime while prepping for this episode. There is more to the "otaku" sub-culture than just this too so more to come! -John
3:41 When they went full weeaboo on a *manga shop* in *Japan*.
They went full cringe
one thing about i like anime or manga. is the artist or the people involved making a stories and how they draw.its amazing! they very talented. I respect every artist you makes them
Thanks for showing the yaoi at the end lol
Sunny Monroe I actually made a short video about yaoi but I think it deserves its own episode. It should be covered as well as other sub-categories of manga. It's a world with many ecosystems :) and it'll be fun exploring them all, even yaoi. -John
WAORYU ONLYinJAPAN yes! Please do!! 😍😄💕
WAORYU ONLYinJAPAN Yes !! i'm waiting for it ~
Great episode once again! Frequently buy at Mandarake but it's fun to see their actual shop. And you certainly get a different kind of appreciation for anime, when you realize how much time goes into it.
stfn112 Right!! I wanted to show how much effort goes into a 5 second scene. It's a lot!! What a privilege to see the studio and have that kind of access. Many companies don't like cameras and reporters showing what's behind the curtain. Mandarake was also awesome to let us film there. They really do have an amazing store at Nakano Broadway worth a visit in person sometime. Thanks for the comment stfn112! -John
Wow, thank you, John.
You never cease to amaze me
Ellsworth D. lol really? That's awesome to hear this episode had a good impact on you! Learned so much from Patrick and researching this episode. Really appreciate hearing from you and taking the time to watch what I'm making. Thank YOU!! -John
Love this video thanks for doing these ^.^
rockstar3374 You're welcome. I can't say THANK YOU enough for the support and for watching Rockstar3374! -John
*Great ep .. Thank you
RABAH HAMAD You are very very welcome and THANK YOU for watching! -John
We all respect who make anime and manga😊😊🙏
Being an illustrator who works digitally, it was kind of funny watching you guys color the main character.
As always, very good episode. I'm looking forward to the "Better than Geisha" episode.
JohnnyinCLE yea same ^_^
JohnnyinCLE Thank you!! I'll start editing the next one soon. It was quite an experience to be in a room where every direction you look, there's a oiran!! One of the highlights of my time in Japan. -John
Any Nana fans? That was such an interesting study on the music scene, and a real tear-jerker,
That why we need to appreciate all the animators
I always wanted to live in Japan and I love manga and anime!!! 😋😉
Ummkulthum Abdulkhabir weeaboo
in a good way
-xXRomanzGangGang
weeaboo
in an mixed feelings way
Ummkulthum Abdulkhabir I'm in Japan
Another great video John. I loved Patrick's reaction to the yaoi you held up, haha. The manga fight in the isle was hilarious, while the unsuspecting shop owner (?) was in the other isle.
Excited for next video!
YoursTrulyCT0 hahahahaha!! That's why I kept that scene in there. It was really my first time finding that kind of manga and asked Patrick a million questions about it. Tha=e shop owner Nabeshima-san from Madarake was absolutely awesome to do that scene. He was a good sport! Mandarake's staff has as big an creative imagination as the manga they sell!
Glad you liked it. -John
Much respect for those making anime
CHUYADEN kickstarter page has just one last day to go! It will be great if you can help the boys and girls out! CHUYADEN on kickstarter.com
ONLY in JAPAN have there ever been only in America?
Really Divine 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇
Thnaks now my family got a place to go in this summer Vacation love u alot😘😘😘😘😘💖💖💖❤❤❤❤💖❤
Subscribed😉😉😉😉😉😉😉😉 pls give more information about japan!!!!
so cool! i would love to get into this industry also
Japanese anime is far superior than west, more creative, more intriguing, diverse, and let go flow ! I am thankful that I saw Japanese anime more in my childhood than stagnant superhero. XDXD
totally agree, i was born in the wrong generation
I grew up watching anime on tv in the 80s and didn't even know it. Thundersub, Robotech, Starblazers....
There are some good stuff in the west like avatar and all those stuff but japan clearly has more quality shows and mangas
I would say I like both
I sure respect those animators! They deserve to be payed a little more than they do for their hard work :).
AMGLEO1 They do deserve more! They are so focused on their job and just having the chance in this industry that many of them would never give it up!! RESPECT to those animators!!!! It is so competitive that you HAVE TO put in the work to get to the top. These guys who keep it up will make it for sure ... rooting for them and supporting their work. Thanks for the comment!! -John
Haha awesome!!
Love your channel and we will visit Japan one day because of you! Actually we plan to do the honeymoon we never had over there :)
iom6666 WOWOW!! That's great to hear!! Japan is a fantastic place to honeymoon, especially at one of the onsen / hot spring resorts in the mountains. Very zen and romantic!! I don't know if the Shinjuku Capsule Hotel would be a good spot though. hahaha!! ... you're comment made my day and really appreciate it very much! -John
Really great video John - Nice work!
Happy GW!!! ^_-
Thomas
***** Nice to hear from you again! Thank you! Appreciate it :) Have a nice GW too!! -John
I always love anime that was my childhood till now and my favorite anime is DBZ, Naruto, Bleach, Attack On Titan, Seven Deadly Sins, Black Clover and One Punch Man 😁💯💯
Very very nice channel, 😃
It's only a matter of time before this becomes a TV series. The camera quality is amazing and this is an all around amazing show.
mexicanjester123 That would be awesome! We gotta dream big my friend!! Appreciate the support each episode :) means a lot to me. -John
Respect the anime creators ❤️❤️
😊😊😊😊 outstanding ✨
I refuse to believe this!!! Goku would totally kick some kryptonian ass.
Stan lee has said Goku wins. This guy is a lie
And found another 2 delusional dbz fans
@@parampreetsinghsudan8056 As much as I love Goku that's disinformation there, Stan Lee didn't create Superman. Superman is DC.
Agreed. Stupid people from USA who are not true fans do not realize that. Goku has become too trained to face him while tutored too heavily. Superman is very mighty but he too has flaws and was beaten before by Darkseid, Batman, Wonder Woman, and others. He and Goku are fun and I like both. Superman has great advantages with some of his might and his invincibility, but he cannot handle some things Goku has before. In a recent movie, Goku is swimming in lava with Broly during a fight.
And Goku can fight alone and only rely on team if the danger is far too great. He alone cannot always be the winner. He realized that during his battle in future against a foe named Zamasu, who totally messed him, Vegeta, and Trunks up. Even Superman would lose to Zamasu due to how dangerous he became. In the end, both are fun and I like them.
loved this
2nd time watching this! Love it!!!
Tangy Orange AWESOME!! Thank you for that Tangy!! -John
Best channel to gain knowledge on Japanese culture and what not.
Otaku Bitts Appreciate that! One of many YT channels :) kind words are encouraging to keep it going!! -John
WAORYU ONLYinJAPAN Haha no problem! Keep it up, I've been watching you guys for a long time now and every video gets better than the last!
I love your channel, very informative. I hope you can make a full video about how anime is produced.
First comment I loooove your channel!!!!!!
c3adswaqq First reply! -John
My.
Life.
Is.

+Martina Barata Lol ^^
This episode was so beautiful that I could cry!!!!!!
Sonia G. Tears of joy!! (I hope.) Glad you enjoyed it :) loved making it!! -John
indeed it looks like paradise to me
It seemed like the Supes vs Goku thing was thrown in to start a flame war. XD
Thanks for this video. This give me an idea where to go to go to buy Anime and Manga items; which I need to know when I visit Japan one day.
ありがかございました +WAORYU ONLYinJAPAN.
Yesss! Honestly, if I had to say which videos on RUclips were my favorite, THIS is what I'd say! I love this series! Keep it going. I am positive Japan will be one of the places I visit! So happy to see these videos coming along.
onlylikenerd Awesome! It'll be hard to outdo this episode. Patrick was a phenomenal guest and co-reporter for this one. Please do make the visit to Japan. It's an amazing place hat still amazes me after 17 years! -John
Those people are so talented! I wish they could win more than this
Pretty cool this is the place I wanted to go
"Goku's Crew"
So you mean The Go-Crew?
Seth Kaiba GOQ&A! Yeah!!
Patrick is a BOSS as always.
hey, I really enjoy your stuff! do they also have anime screenwriters in the studios??
okay, patrick's voice is so relaxing
anime producers have it hard in their jobs each scene takes hours and hours of attention and patience, I wonder how hentai animators keep their mentality in check during gross scenes (some hentai like euphoria are just fucked up)
You guys are grammar thank you very much for the video keep up your great work
Ahh I want to go check out this place one day! Must get myself some Death Note and Attack on the Titan :P
Man great video. Would you be able to do a holiday theme one? I would really like to know about golden week, New Years (when they visit the temple etc), valentine day and white day. Thanks for all your hard work in making these videos. I know there's a lot of background work that goes into making them.
I watched your video about make silly goal and i love it. Makes me wanna have a silly goal in my life too. Really enjoy everything you do in Japan.
novita theresia Woah! You found my small Ted X talk. That was fun! We have to keep things simple and fun, don't we? Life can get pretty complicated! Keep it real. THANK YOU Novita! -John
Dear John (just like a movie) lol... yes i found you :) totally agreed with you, make life simple and having fun of it is important. watching you really made my day happy. keep it going :)
WOOOW! I loved Japan, when if i could'nt see manga neither anime, because i love manga and anime later i want to see new manga or anime until future, right. Then i like much your channel and i suscribed you.
Jonathan Eduardo Loera Ramirez That's fantastic! Thank you for subscribing Jonathan! Yes -- there are so many new anime and manga to discover. It's a big world full of some amazing stories -- we gotta help each other out finding new series to ATTACK!! Thanks again! -John
did anyone else see the ereri doujinshis in the back at 11:20? lmao that place is heaven!
Shonen or shounen however u wanna spell it lol, is my favorite genre! To me shonen is where typically a boy starts of week and the grows and trains to be completely bad ass and essentially the best. And I freaking love that! Like my first anime Naruto. I love it!! I need to go there!! I like manga better than anime but I can watch anime free where manga I have to buy. Ik I can read online but it's just not the same lol...even though I do sometimes haha..I also have a decent manga collection but it hasn't grown in a while
Did i just happen to spot a yaoi manga towards the end O-O Loving it :) If i ever get the chance i'm buying all junjou romantica and sekaiichi hatsukoi volumes ;))
i love your videos and cant wait for more i used to wqtch the jvloggers but there boring but urs is the best and your cute :D
yoyo Thank you! Everyone has their own style, I guess. For me, I think the show has a good balance of entertainment, info and a historical and cultural overview of Japan. Sights and sounds. Vloggers have the advantage of being able to produce more shows more often, covering more things. It takes a long time to make each of the ONLY in JAPAN episodes so I REALLY REALLY APPRECIATE the kind feedback :) makes me day!! -John
11:35 CHOBITS! That's actually my favorite anime :)
Just discovered your channel. Great quality and interesting topics! Look forward to checking out more of your videos ^_^
Just by walking on Japan. You are the luckiest person in the world
I bet this shop sure have "Maison Ikkoku" anime and manga! It's quite popular in 1980s and I still love to watch it very much.
! If I got an opportunity, I will visit this "Mandarake!"
whooo!! Keep up the videos. I love japan!
WonderWings15 Thank you so much for watching each time!! Great to hear from you!! -John
I have a very coriuos question, could u look around and see the creaters of Little Witch Acadamia? ive been wondering who are the creators and when the next one is coming out :D u can find out of not, but thats fine if u dont want too!
And now i will appreciate every anime movie
You always have very good themes for your videos. Hey what camera do you use.
siva shashank GH4, SONY NX70 and GoPro3+ Black. Will be upgrading cameras again in summer :) GH4 produces a beautiful 4K image that down scales into HD even better but audio is a problem. Canon C100 markII or the SONY X70 is a possible solution for a run&gun production needed for what I do with the show.
Thanks for the question! Nice to hear from Siva! -John
3:00 THAT'S JIRAIYA'S YOOOOO XD
LOVED IT...........
They make Superman sound like a god robot. They said can't die, laugh or cry and also..... he never loses?? hahahaha. Do they know who Superman is?
