  • Japan is the king of SCHOOL LUNCHES and in this episode, I find the answer to why -- while eating a lot of Japanese school food.
    ★ Watch the latest episode on Japanese Prison Food:
    • What Japanese Prison F...
    School lunches in Japan are world famous for being super healthy and delicious. With extremely low childhood obesity rates, many have turned to Japan for solutions to feed their school aged kids in the cafeteria. But that's part of the answer. Japanese elementary school kids don't even eat in a cafeteria. They eat in the classroom ー with the teacher.
    It is not possible to eat inside a Japanese elementary school (if you're a tourist) but there is a place in Tokyo where you can try nearly everything. Japanese parents take their preschool kids here to try it as well as older people coming back for a taste of nostalgia.
    This magical place is called KYUSHOKU TOBAN (給食当番 ) and it's a place where you can not only try some of Japan's regional school foods from all over the country, you can also do it in an elementary school classroom! The 2nd floor is a near exact replication.
    If you've ever wanted to be an exchange student in Japan -- or return to 5th grade, here's your chance.
    Unique Japanese School Lunch MENU Items:
    ★ AGEPAN: Fried baked bun covered in sugar and kinako (or other toppings like cinnamon or cocoa)
    ★ SOFTMEN: A special noodle served only in schools. It comes wrapped in plastic and should be dipped in meat sauce or stew.
    ★ WHALE: This was served in schools a long time ago because whale was more available and much cheaper than beef, chicken or pork. Today, it's no longer served in school but you can try some at izakayas around Tokyo and here at this restaurant. Whale is rarely eaten these days since the price of other fish and meats is significantly cheaper.
    WHY ARE JAPANESE SCHOOL LUNCHES SO AMAZING?
    The program is highly regulated with calorie intake and nutritional value set for each scheduled meal.
    Ingredients are usually local and meals are prepared from scratch.
    There are no cafeterias in Japanese elementary schools. (They exist in high schools.)
    Kids eat their lunches in the classroom with the teacher. They learn about nutrition and food responsibility in a hands on setting.
    Milk is served with every meal.
    All students eat the same meal. If a student hates an item, they have to stay and finish it.
    Parents pay monthly for the school lunches, about $40 to $60 a month.
    The Japanese School Lunch program started in 1954. After World War 2, resources were scarce and the government tried to make sure every child had a balanced meal.
    Before World War 2, kids brought their own bento. The usual school food back then was the NORIBEN, rice, bonito fish flakes and roasted seaweed on a metal lunch box. Milk was a luxury item and there were few vegetables.
    Japanese to English Explaination:
    KYUSHOKU = School Lunch
    OISHI = Delicious
    KIRAI = hate (something)
    OKAWARI = a second helping / refill

    A few days after you posted this video, I showed it to a class of fourth graders in the United States, and they loved it, especially seeing the differences between here and schools in Japan.
    Keep those videos coming! They are wonderfully informative and provide an easy way to learn interesting things about Japanese culture.

      キャット G Similar to what happened here in the UK during the war. They made do with any form of energy that they could, I guess. My grandmother said having a choice was a luxury - even if you hated the options available, you still felt happy having a choice.
      Obviously, the cancellation of rationing once the country was back in a better position also contributed to increased caloric intake in the form of fats and sugars. I guess people wanted to take advantage of their increased freedom. My parents grew up in the 60s and 70s and are perfectly healthy yet their diets sounded pretty atrocious back then. Lots of heavy sounding meals and desserts. Carby food and no major health concerns about how much sugar things had in them. They just ate what they were given. But then I guess a lot of their diet was still largely home-made or minimally processed so perhaps that's a factor in their good health.

      Japanese moms have to do a lot of "free" school related stuff, which may include:
      - attending "School Parents Committee" 3-4 times a week
      - helping out with School Vegetable Garden
      - helping out with School kitchen
      - buying, picking up & dropping off school lunch ingredients
      - crunching numbers for school lunch budget
      - filing paperwork with local governments
      - negotiating with suppliers for better price
      - ...and paying 50% cost of school lunch program after doing all those works for free!
      source: actual account from a Swedish neighbor who's lived in Japan for 20+ years, and she resorted to "not understanding Japanese too well" to escape some of these "duties". (Her written/spoken Japanese is just as good as a native Japanese's)

      Harry Haryadi Saddly, most families just make their kids get school lunch. Making lunch is kind of time consuming considering most American school pile up homework and some kids also have chores to do. Later you just forget and go ahead with school food. (In my opinion, it isn't worth it.)

    In Australia we don't have 'School lunches' you bring your own food or you can visit the tack shop and grab basically anything. Australia is so diverse so we have many foods from different cultures. Such as curries and Samosa, meat pies and mash, homus and chicken wraps, spring rolls, noodles, sushi, burgers, stakes, ribs, wedges, fish and chips, popcorn stands anything really, even whole pizzas. I always order the school special though. It's a crispy bread roll stuffed with honey soy battered chicken, honey soy chicken chips and topped with honey soy chicken sauce. It sounds weird, but it tastes amazing!!

    my kids choices can be different daily but a few of them are , 4 chicken nuggets one cup vegetable one cup fruit and milk,or cheeseburger ,one cup vegetable one cup fruit and milk. my kids come home from school daily hungry. In America they dont feed them enough. 4 chicken nuggets for a 17 year old boy is not enough.

      they charge alot for giving the kids nothing . all the little portions are doing is causing kids to be tired at school all after noon then go home and eat a meal before dinner which cause the kids to gain weight.

    i lived in japan on a navy base where we had culture class. we went on a field trip to a japanese school. potato digging, playground activities, etc. the lunch however really stood out to me. it was so good. none of us could communicate except for the basics. best day ever though.

    Your explanations about Japanese school lunch is very correct and fair. Thank you for that. A few things I want to point out - the school lunch is served in most of the public primary schools and some middle schools. The unique fork/spoon is used not because some students can't use the chopsticks but it functions as one piece utensil. The aluminium lunch boxes were very popular before plastics. The whale meat dish was called Noway style and very popular.
    Since this restaurant seemed like to be focused on the old menus, like milk in glass bottle with the strawberry powder and the whale meat, you should not think that all of those are the Japanese school lunches nowadays. Some of the menus here are still served, but some are not anymore. (And the aluminum containers are definitely of old style. It's pure nostalgia.)

    OH NO IT'S PERMANENTLY CLOSED!!!! Ahhhhh I need to find another place to try a Japanese school lunch at a restaurant, any other ideas/places/recommendations? This was something I was looking forward to when i go to Japan for the first time, I hope there's alternatives! This was such a great video btw, thanks for making it!

      I think this kind of restaurant will be always around somewhere. "Gakkoizakaya 6 Nen 4 Kumi" is very similar one (maybe run by the same owner?). But be aware, these are "themed pub" for adults.
      You might look at "cafeOgu1" if you live near. It's a small cafe but the owner was serving school lunch for 10 years.

    in my school no one ever fucking eats at lunch bc all the "good food" is sold at first break. and by good food I mean food with an actual flavour other than grease.

    When I lived in japan, the school lunch was great at least for me because at my school they let you get as much as you wanted, also everyone in my school knew how to use chopsticks and we had games at recess based around chopsticks such as picking up as many rocks as you can using them

    School lunches are weird to me.
    Live in the Netherlands are kinds here have to bring their own lunch.
    of course made by the parents. Many children get to much sweets for lunch.
    Wish we had schoollunches.

      Wel balen dat schoollunches niet bestaan in Nederland. Kan me wel voorstellen dat de meerderheid niks of nauwelijks wat eet tussen de middag.

    • @ninjaspirit7
      @ninjaspirit7 7 лет назад +2

      Fank Daggot Dat ook, maar de meerderheid krijgt veels te ongezond eten mee.
      Denk aan alle broodjes met zoetigheid erop en dan ook nog snoep erbij. (85% van de schoolkinderen)
      Ook ontstaan er ruzies tussen de kinderen door deze ongelijkheid.
      Kinderen van tegenwoordig krijgen steeds meer hun zin en worden sneller te dik door dit soort dingen.
      (Ik lijkt wel een oud wijf dat overal over zeurt) xD

      ninjaspirit7 Het is deels wel waar. Ik zit zelf ook nog op een middelbare school, en vrijwel al het eten dat je kan kopen in de kantine zijn goedkope ongezonde broodjes uit de oven of magnetron. Voor de rest is het alleen maar frisdrank en snoep of chips. Je kan wel gezonde dingen kopen maar die worden nauwelijks verkocht omdat de meeste mensen niet eens weten dat je het kan kopen!
