  • DIY scratch repair on alloy wheel time. Here's the basic process I followed using easy to find products and items many DIY'ers and hobbyists already have on hand.
In today's world of quantity over quality, to maximize sold shop hours; more often we receive our wheels back from the tire shop with new scratches on them.
We can't just blame the tire shops even though lack of care and/or competence combined with pressuring technicians to turn out as many jobs as possible in a day is the main reason. Larger diameter wheels combined with lower & lower profile tires makes tire removal and mounting more difficult than ever, so it's naturally easier to scratch a wheel when rushed. However, with proper care and time, scratches during tire removal and installation shouldn't happen. It's why I now do all my own tire changes at home; there is only one person I can blame for wheel scratches now - myself!
Regardless the reasons for wheel scratches, if you find yourself with some nasty wheel rash on your once lovely alloy wheel, I hope this video will help you successfully repair it yourself while saving you some money and giving you that feeling of pride and accomplishment that most of us DIY'ers enjoy so much.

Hey John! I love all of your content. It’s very straight forward and entertaining. I’m a beginner heli flyer, and have a blade nano s3. I made the mistake of buying the rtf version. The controller it comes with is not computerized and it like a toy. I was wondering if it is possible to bind a non spectrum transmitter to the 2 in 1 esc and receiver. Also, could you make a video about your entire heli collection? That would be awesome as you have some really cool helis!

If you want to use a non-Spektrum computerized TX, you are looking into the world of Multi-Protocol TX systems or external RF modules (which include all the Spektrum DSM protocols). Fairly steep learning curve, but certainly doable. Best place to start your research is Multi-Module's website: www.multi-module.org/

@@Rchelicopterfun thank you John! I was looking in to the radio master tx16 hall, which you had recommended as the best value controller. I will follow your guide on how to bind an open tx radio to the as3x receiver on my heli. Thank you for responding, and making good content!

in our area it's hard to get anyone to do a decent job, i'm not even a perfectionist so if i can tell and shake my head then it's dodgy, so point is i end up doing so many fixes and projects by myself via you tube learning.Thank's John.

Bastards. I just had my tires changed by a mobile specialist this week. We photographed each wheel prior to fitment so we could compare after the job was done. Great policy, I reckon. Great video, John.

Thanks Peter. Yep, that's a very good idea. Lack of many services (I would love to have a top notch mobile tire service here) out in the middle of nowhere is the biggest sacrifice the wife & I made moving from the city to the mountains; but it was one of those bucket list passion things you so accurately described in your half price 911 video. 🙂

Great job. I am just surprised you didn't bring the damage to the garage's attention and insist they paid for the damage they caused to be repaired or gave you your new tyre for free. Maybe you did?

I’ve had the same experience at tire shops. Very sad. As a former business owner, I don’t understand how the training of employees can be so poor. Thanks for the video!

    • @Rchelicopterfun
      @Rchelicopterfun  11 месяцев назад +2

Agreed; unfortunately this is also an artifact of low profile tires and many if not most service centers these days (at least up here in Canada) putting increasingly high monthly targets on number of sold hours through the shop door. This of course negatively impacts quality of work. When sold hours become more important than comebacks/complaints, this is the result. The good old quantity over quality equation that seems to be invasive with many things these days.

Because they're paid barely above minimum wage and don't care. They probably know how to do it better by taking their time but they just don't care and throw the tools and equipment around. None of it is theirs.

The Pros are getting harder and harder to deal with, so you have to do everything yourself. We bought a used car and it did not have the key to take the lock nuts off, so we went to a garage who insisted we make an appointment and it would have cost about $300 to have it done. I went home and found a 12 point socket, hammered it on each lock nuts and remove them myself. My mom recently have the brakes done on her Venza. She wanted me to clean the interior and when I picked it up it had almost no brakes. I took it home and saw new lines on the front driver side caliper and no fluid in the master cylinder. I proceeded to inspect the brakes, found the rear parking cables had not been hooked up and the rear caliper pins were seized. I then proceeded to bleed the lines and massive amounts of air came out, but no leaks anywhere. It appears the "mechanic" that worked on the car only bled the one caliper with the new lines and sent her car home with only this one caliper working. It's so frustrating to have to learn how to do everything at times, but that is the sad state of affairs in the area of Ontario where I live. I started doing my own tire changes years ago when the tire shops either overtighten the lug nuts and they snap off or they don't torque them enough and the lugs nuts come loose and snap off the studs and ruin the rims. If that does not happens they leak. In any event it has been safer an less expensive in the long run doing it myself.
    Thanks for the videos.

Wow, that's scary stuff; I've unfortunately heard many similar stories. Glad you too can at least do your own work and fix such mistakes while taking the *time required* to do a proper job. Time is after all the underlying issue when techs are encouraged by most shops to beat book time. Some shops even let techs go if they don't beat book time or push enough sold hours through the door. Quantity over quality seems to be an invasive problem, not just in the automotive service sector either. ☹

The same thing happened to me with my mother's car and with my own cars that I decided to invest on a tire mounting machine and balancer I got from eBay. I no longer depend on any mechanic for brakes, tires, all fluids, wheel repair, tire repair, lights, belts, etc....But yeah painting is still my work in progress. It is an art.

Very interesting as usual! Are you satisfied with the Firestone tires , since you ordered same brand...? Is the first set also Indy 500 ?

@1983dmd - yep, when I saw that NASA Ingenuity Coaxial Tee, I had to get it 🙂
Been very pleased with the Firestone Firehawk Indy 500's (this will be the second set). Used to only run Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 on this car and I personally can't detect much difference between them and the Firehawk Indy 500's based on my driving environment & style. Maybe a little more steering communication with the PS2, but it's minor especially considering the Indy's are about half the price of the PS2s. I'm also anecdotally getting better tread life with the Indy's as the tread life number would seem to backup (340 on the Indy vs 220 on the PS2).

God I'm done with tire shops. 25 year old American Racing Wheels that were mint and then were destroyed by some kid at my local tire shop. For an added bonus they hammered on steel weights to the outside of the rims? I can't believe shops that just hand back your wheels like they did you some sort of favor and expect full pay for there shit work.

@@Align700nitro They're used to changing tires on cheap wheels that 95% of people don't care about. The 5% or less keep their vehicles meticulous, usually it's a sports car or a high end car. They aren't used to dealing with those kinds of vehicles and people. Just slap it on there and get em out the door as fast as possible is what they're used to. Throwing stuff around.

@Rusty Robinson, Unfortunately, I've experienced tire shop wheel damage from multiple places. I held my breath every time I went in for tires wondering "how bad this time" and what sort of complaint process would I be partaking in. It's a big reason why I started doing all my own tire work, I only have myself to blame now 🙃
