- BVFD was Paged for an Unknown Type Fire, While responding it was updated to a Fully Engulfed Structure Fire, unknown what type of Structure it was. Upon arrival BVFD found a large hay barn fully engulfed in fire. At that time we requested our neighboring dept. Southwest Volunteer Fire Dept. to Respond for Mutual Aid. Once established command, firefighters started setting up drop tank ops while command did his 360 of the Building. It was well known at the time of arrival that there was no saving hay, but we could try out best to save the barn until we got tractors on scene to remove the hay. We then deployed our Portable Water Monitor on a 2 1/2 line. We also requested another neighboring dept. Salem Volunteer Fire Dept. Mutual Aid for a Tanker Truck. Southwest Fire Arrived on Scene and pulled a 2 1/2 and 1 3/4 handline and we all proceeded to protect the structure until the hay was removed. When firefighters started to make a push into the building they were not on air due to light smoke conditions and natural material smoke not being hazardous for firefighter health. Firefighters masked up because the wind changed directions and made the heat of the fire start to rise quite a bit. We then masked up because of the heat conditions. Once we ran out of water and backed out, the wind shifted away and temperatures dropped once again so firefighters then masked down. About that time farmers arrived on scene with Tractors and started removing the hay from the barn while firemen cooled it down.
Once complete, all departments went back into service.
Firefighters were on scene for approx. 6 1/2 hrs. Using approx. 56,000 gallons of water.
Departments Responded with the following equipment and personnel:
BVFD - 1 Engine, 2 Tankers, 1 Brush Truck, and 9 Personnel
SWVFD - 1 Engine, 1 Utility, and 8 Personnel
SVFD - 1 Tanker, and 2 Personnel
Thanks to all Mutual Aid Depts for Your Response, and Help on Scene! It was greatly appreciated
