Thanks for all of the feedback. I will continue looking through it over the next few weeks.
One point I didn't mention during the video is that the audio/video version could be completely free. If I got a publisher involved there would be no way of doing that.

I've been doing some writing myself recently, so I can completely relate to looking back at your work, disliking what you've got, and trying to fix it. I've had to do some massive edits on my own work, and I can agree that it's a daunting task. I'm not sure I can give any advice, much less the best advice, but if you still truly love the story you've created, keep going with it. If it still makes you super excited, even ages after you started it, it's a great idea. All of us are here to support you though this bump in the road.
Also, I think it would be great if you read it as an audiobook, video or plain audiobook form. Writers have a greater understanding of the tone and meaning of their dialogue, and to be honest, I would enjoy a book read by you.
Either way, keep going with it, but only as much as you want! I'm excited to see what you do with this massive project!

As a writer, I've been excited to hear about this project for so long now. To hear about this though? I'm ecstatic! I can't wait to see what you've done and I'm glad you were able to pick yourself up after what must have been a super frustrating and discouraging realization. I am going to watch those videos the day they come up, honest. I'm excited and proud of your work so far. Can't wait to see what you've done and what you will do. Good luck Sir. Take care now. Toodles. 🙂🙂

I really like your idea of an audio format. As you said, it will be a lot more difficult to pick up on or be impacted by any mistakes or flow issues you have when we're not actually looking at the words. The time you've spent working on this will translate into really important experience when writing your next book! You will have learned so much that can be transferred to something better in the future. You could even take some aspects of this project such as the characters which you said you really like to put into something new that is structured better. Whatever you come out with im sure will be great as you clearly have the self awareness to know when something you put out is what you would like to see. I definitely don't think it's worth putting out a product that you aren't happy with. :)

I am a little bit disappointed that you’re seriously considering not writing a physical book. Like some of the commenters here, I too am trying to chase that difficult and elusive dream of becoming a published writer (in Spanish language) It’s natural for you to gravitate towards multimedia considering your highly successful RUclips channels but as the poem goes; Do not go gentle into that good night Stampy.
I purchased Neil Gaiman MasterClass on writing, he writes successful Young Adult novels so that may be pertinent for you but most importantly is discovering that writing in its essence is mostly re-writing, slimming and economizing your texts. I was so embarrassed reading my sloppy prose but after extricating offending sentences and even paragraphs things started looking better. I could begin to see the outline of the writer I would like to become.
Have you thought about bringing your characters and stories to comics? it seems to me, considering your love for short stories in video format, translating your beautiful world to comic form isn’t that much of a stretch. Whatever you decide we’re behind you Stamps. Your Minecraft universe has brought many laughter and joy in times when we needed it most. Thank you for that! Que tengas buen día Stampy.

I’d definitely listen to any audios of the book and watch the videos. Having the pdf as an option to read along with would probably be best too since reading was the first expectation when the project first began? But you should definitely continue writing and even move onto new projects to improve until you’re happy enough to publish a physical book!! :>

I think it would be great to expose your writing to us as a test audience. I've never written a novel, but in writing and playing D&D campaigns, I know that seeing the reaction really tells you what your players/readers find interesting and what they dislike. This opportunity would also be a great start to growing a community around your writing. I like the idea of videos reading through or delving into the novel. I can't wait to see what you do next!

I like the idea of doing the story as you sitting down reading it! I'm a new director and I started doing visual storytelling over just plain writing because of the same reason, I was unhappy with the overall quality. As I discovered, how you tell the story is equally important as the original idea. I'm super stoked to see this whenever you decide to release it!

And what you said later in the video about the top percentage of your viewers actually bothering to watch these book diaries, especially this long one, makes me feel proud. Godspeed with perfecting book 1, Stamps.
I’m a young teenager who’s planning to make a huge “manga” project, with a sister series, sometime this year or the next, and I feel like you: properly publishing it might be WAY too big of a hurdle for poor, broke me with just a laptop and an iPad.

In late 2017, I decided that I wanted to create a full-length video game. I spent 3 years planning out what I wanted to do with the story, realizing it wasn't that good, and redoing it, but I finally have achieved something great and decided to open the project up for other people to join, realizing how long it would take to do alone. All that's done so far is the script, character designs, world map, and a small portion of the soundtrack, but it's been a real journey. I'd love to read your book when it's published, and if I can give one piece of advise, it's not to rush it. Take your time, and let the story evolve with you. As for how you plan to release the book, just do whatever feels right to you. It's your creation, so you should be the person who decides what happens with it. I know some people don't like physical books, so releasing it online could be an option if you want accessability, but seeing how many people already know who you are, they might be excited to find out what you've been doing all this time anyways. I wish you the best of luck. Thank you for everything.

I would say not to be too hard on yourself. We all have to start somewhere and it probably won't be perfect. Get some fresh perspectives work on your skills and lastly follow what you think is best. Your the one with the idea and story no one else. Sorry if this sounds wordy or came out wrong but wishing you the best stampy.

  • @theflawed
    @theflawed 4 года назад +9

Personally, I love reading just physical books, and I really would want one from you! That said...
I mean, yeah, it wouldn't be easy. I've heard of writers who have had to redo books seven times before they got it right, and from what I know, that's kinda just part of writing a book. I've never published a book (I am young ;d), but if I did, I would want it to be physical (and even perfect, to be honest). But that's what *I* would want.
You said it was a passion project, right Stampy? To me, that means you should do it as you want. I would definitely listen to people's opinion, but in the end, do what you want to do. If your passion is to write it _and_ publish it, as perfect as you could make it, then I would suggest striving toward it because it would probably feel pretty good. But if you would be happy with taking your story and using it in some other way like a video, then do it (and you can always put the text of it elsewhere).
And hey, you can always polish it up in the future if you want to. You can make videos of it now and publish it in the future, or vise versa. It's your book!

  • @georgiataylor4316

I think you should do what you will enjoy doing the most. You only get one life so you should use it well by doing things and spending time with people that make you happy, such as writing stories with Alex. Even if the story isn’t in the format that we hoped for, I’m sure that everyone will love it none the less. Don’t knock yourself down about it because you’ve done more than most people could ever do and there is no reason to feel down about being creative. You’re going to make mistakes because everyone does, but they are only going to help you get the story that you wish for. As long as you like the story nothing else matters. After all the journey is often better than the destination. You should be proud of what you’ve written and I think everyone will love it. Lots of love from Australia 🇦🇺 Good luck❤️

This is such a great idea. No one realizes how much work goes into writing a book until they try. Pacing the narrative is so hard for new writers to nail, and I think translating it to a visual medium could solve that problem. It's harder to take your eyes off a video on a screen than words on a page.

While I am saddened by your disheartening on making the book a published project, I can understand your position. You're being very wise by taking a step back and looking beyond what it is. Wherever you take this project, I'll be excited. I just want to experience this epic tale your heart is so passionate for.
A podcast would be my best suggestion if you decide to take it in the direction of not publishing. While podcasts would cut out visuals, it will make the task of listening to your book easier for the audience. Rather than devoting time to watch a chapter, we can put it in our ears while we go about our day, increasing the chance of those willing to stick around. It also gives you the comfort of not being seen, so you can focus on your tone of voice and reading skills rather than how presentable you may look.

  • @SketchingwithRabbits
    @SketchingwithRabbits 4 года назад

As an animator and illustrator, I really enjoy the idea of videos for each chapters with rough illustrations to go with it! I think having the video format with illustrations and audio will allow your audience to become more immersed in the world because the characters and scenery will be set and will look as you imagined them. Each chapter could feel like a mini-movie and just adding small visuals would be really fun and exciting! Plus, having you read it will really bring all the characters to life. As the author, you know your story, characters and the world best, so you would be the best to illustrate that verbally and through the videos.
Of course, do whatever you feel works best for the book and for you. We support you and I look forward to seeing what you ultimately decide on!

I actually really love where you’re at and where you’re thinking of going. I applaud your dedication to your passion project and commitment to keeping it fun and enjoyable, but also your honest look at your abilities. That’s a maturity and self-assessment that not many people ever get to.
As far as what you should do, I love the “illustrated” or “interactive” or “multimedia manuscript” intent you’re thinking of doing. I think it marries your passion for writing and your love of videography well, and I think you have the resources to find the artist and musician you’re looking for!
Go forth and conquer. Can’t wait to see the videos!

  • @atlasweylandeden1091
    @atlasweylandeden1091 4 года назад

I’ve been working on a book for a long time now, and I understand the type of thing you’re going through. I’ve really enjoyed following your book diary, and, though I did miss your videos, I was glad to see you putting so much time into writing.
My main advice is that the book doesn’t need to be perfect, what’s important is that you love it. When you write something, it will never be quite perfect. But it gets to a point, after endlessly editing and revising it, when you think “Okay, it’s not perfect, but it’s the best it can be.” At the same time, I understand that if it’s something you’re going to share as a published work, it has to be at a point where you’re happy with it.
I like the idea of turning the book into a video series. I know that some stories are just better read out; the human voice can give words a magic they don’t have inside your head.
Mostly, I think it’s great that you enjoy writing (to me, that’s the point of doing it!) The reality is, if you keep writing, as well as reading books you enjoy, you’ll get better at writing. This book series may not need to be published; that could come later when you feel you can write a novel you’re proud of.
Anyway, thank you for taking it this far! From here, just see what would serve the story most, then go from there.
    Byyyyyeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! 🎂

This seems like a really cool idea, and I get where you’re coming from. All the authors I read seem so good, and then I see it’s their debut novel and I think, “Oh my gosh! How in the world can they write so well?!” And I know that they put a ton of effort into it, most of them say it takes them like 2/3 years to write a single book, and that’s with a huge company and lots of editors supporting them along the way. It’s really amazing to see how far you’ve come-I can barely finish a short story before getting bored and writing something else-and I think that this would be a good idea, especially since you’re doing most of this on your own. I also really like to listen to things while I do things (I listened to every podcast you did with Squid) and I know a lot of people who do, too. Plus, it could help with your acting skills along with your writing skills. Anyway, I’ll be sure to see whatever the finished product is! I’m sure it will turn out great, no matter what you decide! :D (I kinda went on a rant... didn’t I? Sorry!!)

Stampy, the thing you describe sounds like you want to do "soundscaping". Alongside that, it sounds like a similar thing to "visual radio", a genre that allows you to have only audio if you like, but it is enhanced by video if you so choose to consume it in that way.
When i think of soundscaping, i think of the twilight zone radio prigram. The sounds of wind, the tense music, the sounds of doors creaking, water splashing or a train clacking along.
If this is what you like, it's the theater of the mind. Even tho video is your wheelhouse, perhaps leaving the visuals to the readers imagination could be an option; like a dramatized audiobook of sorts.

I think the video format could be great, I would definitely be interested in watching them. With regards to the actual book, if you look at a lot of top authors they often end up writing five or six full length books before they get published and/or are happy with what they’ve written. You could also go back and re-write them once you have a few more novels under your belt as that is relatively common as well. Good luck with writing in the future.

As a person who wants to be a writer one day and an artist I'm honestly looking forward to this, and I kinda expected something like this to happen honestly, its always a wierd feeling to look back at your work over the months, I may not be a writer yet but all I can say is do what you feel is right, you can only do your best if you believe in it, I'd be happy to listen to you read it honestly, its true having the book physically would be amazing but its fine as long as we can enjoy the story, plus it would probably be better if it was read by the writer of it to express the feelings.

Honestly, do whatever your creativity leads you to. Your idea sounds lovely. I think you reading it out would give it a more personal touch as well, you would be guiding how we perceive your story. Though please do leave a PDF for us to download! I’d look forward to printing it out and re-reading it after hearing it.
🧡💛Anyways, full support whatever direction you choose Stampy💛🧡

As a person who writes and has an audio story format as well (i write scripted story podcasts), I say go for it! I love the idea of the story coming out in video format enhanced with sound effects, music, and illustrations. It will definitely bring in a different side of an audience as well. I say think about it for a while of course, because I definitely know the feeling of wanting a physical book in your hands that you created but is difficult to do. Maybe even one day when your skills have improved, you can make the story into a book once again for those readers who haven't stumbled upon your videos. You could have the best of both worlds, but I definitely think doing the videos could be a great way to get that story out there! The most important part in all of this is the story that you have created! That story needs to be seen and shared and you should take the best possible route to deliver the story you want! Will support you and the story however you release it in the end!

I honestly think you should tell your story in video form. It would be a unique and original story first shown in illustrated form. It's a great idea! 😊

I think the best option is the video idea and also self publish it through amazon so people that want a physical copy can still get one. If the quality isn't up to scratch then people can watch your videos on the books before buying them. So, you aren't charging people to read the book, you can even link PDF's for each chapter, but giving people the option to have a physical set with no worries about a publisher losing money is perfect.

I think it’s an amazing idea uploading chapters of your book up onto RUclips whilst you read it. To keep people who want to see a hard copy happy, you could half your screen and have half of you reading and the other half could be he page that you are on. That gives the viewer a chance to read a page and then just time skip to the next one if they want to read it themselves. Overall it’s an amazing idea and I can’t wait to see what the future beholds. Keep your head up and try your best x 💜

I love this idea, I can’t wait till the videos come out😁 by the way I like your sweater, and just to let you know, even though you think some of your writing isn’t very good, its better than you think. It’s the same concept of how as an artist, never thinking my work is good even though it is in the eye of other people.

I would enjoy the video format, I never really liked reading, but when you published your book I would try to read it (even if I have a hard time) because you wrote it, but if you read it yourself, that’s literally the best thing for me. I know others would want a book, I even want a book, but I would really love to hear you read it :)

As a somewhat beginning writer, I understand the mindset your having. Although I haven't decided to write books, I do write random stories on things and I understand the feeling of wanting to do it yourself and not really have someone else with you unless maybe for editing purposes. I believe that the video reading is a great idea! It will be a new experience and I think you would have fun doing it as well.
So I say go for it!

It sounds really cool and I would definitely watch all of the story reading videos!

I love the idea of giving people multiple options of the new format: having the video, potentially an audio only version and a pdf with images attached in to the relevant sections. I believe the video will be the best way to enjoy your writing but for those who do prefer the idea of a pdf or an audiobook they still have that option. Really good idea!

I think this is a perfect idea - combines RUclips, film, and the story into a medium that I think a lot of people will like. It’s an exciting blend of an audiobook and a visual representation that will let the project really take advantage of the 21st century technology that is available! (Plus, I could pretend to write film music for these videos... :P)
I had a similar creative discouragement during last semester at grad school, with a piece of music I was working on. It’s good for me to know too how the creative process is always some kind of struggle and we can’t be happy with everything we produce.
Whatever happens, I look forward to it!

Doing it as a video allows people from other countries to enjoy hearing the stories. For example, I live in New Zealand and I don't purchase things from Amazon, because a lot of times it says that the item/ book can not be shipped here. Creating videos reaches a wider audience and lets you continue to make videos which is also a passion of yours, you get to combine the two. It will also allow you to create and edit videos in different ways. Yes, do include a pdf for those who wish to read it for themselves. At the end of the day, it is your project, go with what feels right to you. Whatever you decide I wish you all the very best.
