Hi Jeff, you are a very good Teacher! Every time I watch your Films I feel good! Together with Rob (Beat) Brown, you are the best Teacher I ever saw! Go on, please, best wisches
I just thought about my way of drumming and I realized I was only looking at the notes and tried to remember certain grooves when playing songs. Then I looked up how I might be able to fix that and now I’m here. Great tips you got there. I will try and make it work for me because I’d like to play more freely without having to remember every single groove or even fill...
It can be difficult to teach others how to feel the music. Love the Q&A approach, that could help those who struggle with putting things in the right place. Thanks for the video.
I took lessons and I learned that skill on my own. It was funny I be learning out of a drum set book. We go beat by beat and I learn the beat first then would play 8 bars then do that with a fill. After learning a beat sometimes he be go straight to the 8 bars with the fill.
I know this is an older video and you probably won't see this but MAN this helped me more than any other drumming tutorial I've seen. It has shifted my mind away from being hyper focused on learning sheet music to being creative behind the kit. This is the true way to learn
Excellent lesson. I still find this "free state" one of the most challenging states to get into while for instance staying within the structure of a hard bop song or while reading a big band chart. Nonetheless, musically it is key! Thanks Jeff!
Logic and reasoning supports your understanding, but it is ultimately emotion and feel what makes us express ourselves. Loved the Q&A idea! Great job as usual Jeff.
Jeff, your awesome brother. For those of you who that are not patreons of Jeff, you are missing the whole package. Go sign up as a patreon, its good stuff.
Thank you for your tip. This actually works..I started learning drums since 6 months but I'm so faster than others especially in improvisation and catching the groves vibes, it's bcz i have this music sound in my mind before I play it.. In the Indian percussion system we have something called konnakkol, percussion language, which has syllable for every rhythm, note and sounds that can be made with the percussion instrument, like mridangam, ghatam tabla etc. We are taught that first along with timing. only after that we are taught to play it on the actual instrument. That's why we can see carnatic musicians improvise things impromptu on the spot also it's a common phenomenon where different types of percussion instruments are having conversion during the concerts.. I drive my coworkers crazy because this is all I do at work “bum bum tsk chaka bum bum tsk” then I start mashing into my keyboard and the whole ward hears it since we work graveyard.
Hi jeff, honestly your drumming is just solid man, I take a lot of inspiration from the way you play drums your feel and style is just so well worked. How often do you practice and are you in a band??
Hey Jeff, please don't include yourself in the "we mere mortals" category 😊 you are an amazing drummer and an inspiration for all of us. Love the transcription sheet with the drum loops, it’s going to occupy me for the coming week or two. Your videos always have extra value, thanks so much from Italy.

This will be a great addition to "backbeat fills", the kind where you keep the 2 and 4 on the snare.

Hi jeff, honestly your drumming is just solid man, I take a lot of inspiration from the way you play drums your feel and style is just so well worked.
How often do you practice and are you in a band??
Would you also recommend playing a groove for extended periods of time so that it becomes autopilot?
👌
I've been playing over 30 years. Always dreamed of taking off and chasing what you're doing. You have full time work?
Hey Jeff, please don't include yourself in the "we mere mortals" category 😊 you are an amazing drummer and an inspiration for all of us. Hey Jeff, great advice as always.
What’s your opinion of e drums?
Have you been learning English more these last few years?
All of A sudden*. Never “the”. Great lessons nevertheless.
