- Legendary Waterman Mike Doyle led an exemplary life. This slideshow was compiled by his family and friends as a tribute to a life well lived. He followed the motto he coined, Surf to Live, Live to Surf. Aloha Brother! (NOTE: The family asks for forgiveness for using photos in this slideshow without crediting the photographers. It would have made this an impossible task. Mahalo!)

What an incredible life, what an incredible man, what an incredible human being! Makes me proud to have been a surfer during his life and still to this day! 73 years young! Aloha!

I got to spend some time with Mike in Del Mar, Ca and Park City in the late 90's. At the time, I hadn't been a surfer for too long and my fascination with surf history had just begun. I knew he was an icon, but I just didnt fully comprehend what an opportunity it was to listen to him "Talk Story." A few years later, I would have pinned him down with a million questions like a pathetic fan boy. Talk about a life well lived... and a renaissance man in so many impressive ways. Thanks for putting this together Dawn - made my night!
Hi Dawn, I just saw this for the first time. This is 6/6/24. I really enjoyed it. You put together a great collection of photos and memories. I smiled, laughed, cried, and generally, enjoyed recalling many of our times together. I miss Mike and his calls and emails alerting me of an approaching swell telling me to get my ass down to Cabo cuz it may be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. He was right. With Mike, I ended up surfing some of the biggest and best waves of my life. He was a mentor who always had more confidence in my ability than I did. He would evaluate my surfing session and suggest ways to improve. His first lessons for me were with snowboard carving. I had met him, Jeff King, and Nat surfing in Cabo. While surfing he had invited me to join him in Aspen. I was expecting to have him watch me for one run to help my disastrous backside turn. I met him there at lunch and he ended up dedicating the rest of the afternoon to improving my backside turn, (we are among surfers here so I don't need to say my heelside turn). My backside turn and my confidence in doing it became the best part of my carving and my surfing also improved with Mike's help. We spent a lot of time together at his place, traveling in Mexico, Indonesia for surf, and snowboard carving in Aspen. A few times Mike, Annie, Joey, and Yana would stay with us in Vail. During those years it seemed that the 6 of us were always doing things together. I miss him and dearly hold his memories and the happy times we all spent together close to my heart.

Thank you for sharing these glimpses of a life so well- lived, that Mike squeezed every bit of the juice right out of it! He will be a surf legend for all time --especially for those of us who began surfing in the early 60's, when Mike established himself as an all-around waterman and surf hero, worthy of our deep respect and admiration. Aloha, brother...it was a nice ride!
Mike was my idol before I ever got to ride a surfboard. I was a navy brat in Long Beach and we didn't have much money but I saved up and bought a homemade board for $20. I first stood up at Ray Bay in Seal Beach, probably in 1965. A little later I got a Hansen just like Mike. It rode like a dream. Sorry to say I didn't realize he had passed until I came across this on RUclips. Beautiful tribute. May he rest in peace.
So well done! Grew up in Hermosa and Manhattan Beach..Mike and the other icons of surf at that time impressed so many of us and laid a foundation for being in the water for life. Thank you, Mike!

Pretty sure it was Mike that brought the film Free Ride, from the east coast to Destin for the showing in 1977.
