Adaline Shepherd - 'Live Wires Rag' (Sydney Conservatorium Clarinet Ensemble)

  • This semester's run of recordings concludes with this spritely rag! I know that a historically-informed performance of this would probably take it a bit slower, but I love treating it as an energetic concert-closer! Here's what I said introducing it from the stage when we performed it recently:
    "We're finishing our concert with a ragtime piece by the relatively little-known American composer Adaline Shepherd. She wrote a number of piano works around the start of the 20th century in the prevailing styles of the time, but she retired from composition when she married at the age of 27 in 1910. Despite her relatively short career as a composer, the works that she did write definitely hold their own against other masters of the era."
    Recorded in room 3047 at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, on the 24th of May, 2024. Many thanks to Georgia Webb for helping to facilitate this recording.
