Something I remember hearing about with Wish is that something they changed from the storyboard was Star was gonna be a boy and love interest for Asha. And the "At All Costs" song that she and Magnifico sings was actually a song she and Star sing for each other, being more of a love song song between them. I'll be honest, I would've loved it if they did that! But I do like this version of this song a lot lol. I keep listening to the soundtrack and "At All Costs" is one of my favorites! Perhaps he could even have something to do with Magnifico, since they both have wish granting abilities--yet choose to use them in vastly different ways. I think they could've really done something with him in terms of fully developing him. As a regular Star, all he really does is grant wishes and look cute as a marketable plushie... It's actually really bad. It ignores that there are bad wishes. And that wishes could actually be harmful. It also has many plot points. Like Asha is actually the villain of this movie. Everyone is so focused on wishes that they never seem to want to do anything to achieve their wishes themselves. All they want is for other people to accomplish their wishes for them. The friends are actually all pretty awful and one dimensional. The only real character is supposed to be the villian and he's really just a misunderstood character who isn't evil until he snaps at the end. Even in the scene where she finds out what happens. He was just kind of throwing out he wanted a successor and she just then asks for him to do something for her while doing nothing first to deserve it. She also acts like her grandpa's wish deserves to be granted for no real reason other than his age.

So when the movie was first released. I didn't watch it because well. I've seen so many people say it was bad or that it wasn't gonna be good. But i was bored and couldn't find anything new to watch.. So i decided to watch Wish and I was well surprised. It is bad but also good. The songs are just top notch and I love Aisha. But I do wish we got a bit more? Like making the villain well a bit more evil. Like maybe having him steal everyone's wishes and giving them to himself and soon turning those "wishes" into disasters or maybe turning people who don't have a wish into a wish for himself (if that makes sense) plus I do know for the cute little star, he was actually supposed to be human and that was gonna be her love interest and even though i do think the little star is adorable, the star boy probably would've been more awesome. Plus i wish the villains villain song was a bit better. But overall, I actually do like the movie. Its not as bad as people say it is, well to me its not
Ps ; also if you don't like the movie, thats totally fine! But please do not call people liars or say their opinion is wrong. If you can have a opinion about the movie then so can others. You may dislike it, but others may like it. For me i like it, but im not gonna go after someone just because they hate it. Also another thing, don't do what i did. Don't listen to people. Watch the movie for yourself and then see if you actually do like it or not. I listened to people and disliked the movie even though i never seen it. Then i watched it and my opinion changed. But im not saying you have to change your opinion. But watch it first and then make a decision. Don't follow others just because

Magnifico is such a true depiction of a legitimate narcissist. Not as a buzz word but as an actual diagnosable narcissist. He figuratively feeds off of other people's praise and the moment they start to question him even a little, he flips a switch and gets all pissy. He doesn't truly love other people, he loves what other people can give him. That's why he can so quickly flip from "I'm your amazing hero" into "I hate all of you". Even the way he "protected" the wishes is more like a dragon's hoard of treasure. It doesn't belong to him, but he feeds off the positive energy of those pure wishes. They're like trophies of people's trust and admiration.

@@SCR33NH3AD Magnifico would have worked much better as a truly evil villain if they had not included the "destroyed home country" backstory, or if they had made it a twist that it was actually him who caused the destruction. The sad background explains (which is not the same as justifies) too many of the things he does, so they end up being "bad choices" instead of "evil deeds".
For examle, him keeping Sabino's wish for fear of a revolution is rooted in his fear of his new home being destroyed like the past one. Without the backstory, it would have been just Magnifico's ego not wanting anyone to stand up to his rule.
They added a lot of narcissist characteristics to him to make him "evil", but it really all lies in the treatment of his past. Scratch it, or turn it around, and then he is truly evil, no evil book needed.

    • @NorthStar8211
      @NorthStar8211 9 месяцев назад +3

@@SCR33NH3AD Absolutely spot-on except perhaps for one thing. It seems to be taken for granted by many that Sabino was 18 years old when he gave his wish to Magnifico. I am sure that the people who were born on the island do this at 18 but there are also people who relocate to Rosas at older ages as seen in the beginning and both Elena and Esteban seemed somewhat older than 18. Also Sabino looks old in his wish orb and I assumed that people look in their wishes as old as they were when they had their ceremony with Magnifico (unless people age in their wishes as they do in real life or maybe the wish shows them at the age they expect to be when their wish is granted). But what really makes me doubt that Sabino had been waiting 80 years is that this would suggest that Magnifico is as old or older than Sabino. Although it is very likely that Magnifico is older than he seems and maybe he uses magic so that he and his wife look younger, I cannot really see him as being anywhere near 100 years old. Besides, when Asha revealed that her grandfather is 100 years old, Magnifico replied that this is “impressive”, which suggests that he seems it as quite an achievement and he is not that old himself. So, at least in my opinion, Sabino was probably no younger than 50 when he and his family moved to the island and his son was more likely an adult and married to Sakina at that time as well. So Sabino still had to wait about 50 years, which is a long time at any rate.

I know I have heard a lot of negativity about this movie but I'll be honest, I loved it! The music was great, I have a new villain song to bop to, the style had this nostalgic feel with a modern flair, they put references EVERYWHERE, and it had the theme of love, friendship, being true to yourself, and standing up to the corrupt powers that be (even if they don't see themselves as corrupt). It's a simple story that feels like it was trying to fit a lot of the themes that Disney has had in a lot of their movies through the years. I think it was a great movie that did what it was trying to do, pay homage to the history while looking forward to the future. I saw this in theaters with my mom and son and I haven't felt that much like a kid in a while. Also Chris Pine voices Magnifico and man ate that up! People sleep on him but he be killin it!

Magnifico is a tragic villain/antagonist at best, he is certainly not the hero. I do think that the movie could've done a better job at emphasizing exactly how harmful what he was doing was (I suppose they choose not to do that because they were afraid to get too dark or whatever), but you can still tell that Magnifico was taking what he himself calls the best part of someone's heart and refusing to give it back. Some may say "well, the people gave it to him willingly" - yeah, because he tricks them into thinking that forgetting is a good thing. At the first wish ceremony, when he takes the two new citizens' wishes, he tells them that "it's a real weight off, isn't it?" when you can clearly see on their faces that they seem scared and lost without their wishes. Someone in the crowd actually screams "forget without regret", which is the same thing that Asha says during the Welcome to Rosas scene, back before she finds out the truth. That whole forget without regret thing seems like some sort of brainwashing phrase or something, so clearly, Magnifico has been able to deceive everyone, even Asha, for a very long time about what he's actually doing.
I also want to address the very huge lie that people are making up about the film that people are using to paint Asha as the villain. People keep saying that she is demanding that Magnifico grant all the wishes. Asha is NOT demanding that all the wishes get granted. I don't know where that narrative came from. She does not want Magnifico to grant all the wishes. She even understands his point about how some of the wishes could be dangerous and she agrees that the bad ones should be stopped - like she is being very rational and reasonable during their conversation. She only asks him to consider giving the good wishes back to the people so they can have a chance to pursue them on their own without his help. So this whole idea that Asha is this selfish, entitled person who wants everyone's wishes to be granted without hard work is a bunch of nonsense.
And Asha suggesting that he gives the wishes back if he won't grant them is not unreasonable. I mean, what is the harm in letting good people have their wishes back? It's almost like he doesn't even want people to have dreams - which that is something he outright says towards the end when he's just completely lost his mind, he literally says there will be "no more hope, no more dreams" and that right there makes me believe that from the beginning, that's what not giving the wishes back was really about. It was about not letting the people have dreams of their own. Like seriously, why not just give the wishes back? I've heard some people try to say that Magnifico only acts the way he does because he's burnt out being king - while I think there's a lot more to it than that, well, if he was burnt out, then that's even more of an incentive to give the wishes back. That'll be less work for him if they just all achieve their dreams themselves. But no, Magnifico weirdly wants to hold on to the best part of everyone... That is a huge red flag and confirms that he is not about protecting the wishes or doing what's best for the people - he just really wants control. He is not the good guy here and this is obvious long before he uses the book of dark magic, because what kind of person would be okay with keeping the best part of everyone all for himself and act in a manipulative way to make people believe that they'll be happy giving their wishes to him when in reality, they'll be unhappy?
I could go on, but this comment is already too long lol. I've been obsessed with this film since I saw it earlier this month. It doesn't deserve all the hate it's getting. It's personally one of my top three Disney films (that's not from Pixar) along with Tangled and Zootopia! Asha is one of my favorite Disney characters ever and Magnifico is actually my favorite Disney villain. Yes, he's the villain, but I really like him as the villain. And I'm open to him being redeemed, if he shows some remorse for his actions - I guess we'll just have to wait for a sequel or spin-off show to see whether that'll happen or not. Anyways thank you for reacting the movie, I'm glad to see someone else finally have a more positive opinion of the film!!

Also I've seen the video of "Knowing what i know now" as "villain behavior=inciting a mob" and comparing it to gaston's mob song. If that were the case then what do you call Grumpy rallying the dwarves against the queen? Or Phoebus rallying the townspeople against Frollo and his soldiers? Or Simba and Nala gathering the lionesses against Scar and the hyenas? Or Mulan's "I'll make a man out of you? (including the reprise)"?

Interestingly also there's Magnifico becoming "the magic mirror" as having the "space of reflection." He hasn't really considered that for every wish crushed there's the human ability to pick up the pieces and figure it out themselves. Here we see all living things have their own magic in their basic humanity and the trials of their lives as a greater community ("I'm a Star") but there are those who fail to realize that magic and connect with it and thus resort to outsourcing which becomes a detriment, thus Magnifico through constantly outsourcing magic as the answer loses sight of his humanity and the magic in it isolates and traps himself.
The exterior magic isn't the answer but only part of the greater equation.

Also across the board with Magnifico and other characters this is kinda how narcissim works. Yes he lacks parental care after losing family, but he also lacks parental discipline and thus humility to realize outsourcing magic, milking praise and controlling everything isn't the answer and that as bad as it may be he's only human and needs the humbling experiences to grow, and running from them will only trap himself.
Notice he puts himself on a pedestal and has plenty of the people's praise. The people praise him, build monuments to him, bake cookies of him, have CRUSHES on him. And when he's up on stage in the ceremony at the beginning he seats his wife in the back rather than by his side as equal, and when she tries to reason with him he ignores her, and he only put down the book when Amaya bolsters him talking of his great power, and shows affection only when she calls him "handsome" and disregards real leadership qualities.
In the end, Amaya saying "no" to releasing him and saying it's the thanks he deserves is a form of the parental discipline he needs, so he's basically getting a "time out"

Some of the songs for this movie are definitely on repeat, and I do love Ariana Debose - she deserves a disney princess-ship for sure. I do think that the pacing for the story felt quite rushed, like the king goes from good guy to villain in what feels like 15 minutes. perhaps it was because they were trying to stick a lot of different elements and references in the movie, like the goat singing to the chickens. If it had an extra 20, 30 minutes to expand on the story I think it would've been great :p

  • @alyssabullock6421

The biggest gripes people get from this movie are because the original concept was a lot more fleshed out and promising, with way more threat and chemistry to the villains (the king and queen were going to be the first ever evil Disney couple) and more understandable goals for Asha.
In fact, the original plot for the movie was already storyboarded most of the way with ALOT of it finished, and the star was going to be an actual, magical boy character who shape shifts and potentially falls in love with Asha (it's also heavily theorized the "At All Costs" song you hear in this movie was initially their duet because the demo version uses "love" instead of "promise").
The plot this movie could have had would've been more intense and felt like an actual fairytale instead of Disney trying to shove in a bunch of references to their old movies left and right.

Elementals issue is that it's woke when it comes to trying to represent the liberal idea of systematic oppression and uses NY as a base.
Wish's issues stem from the poor musical choices. The messaging being terrible. The characters other than Magnifico being flat. Magnifico actually being a good guy. Asha being a spoiled brat. And the people in the utopia created by Magnifico for basically nothing all being awful.

Dreaming. Following your heart. The whole movie is based on that she got told no to granting her grand fathers wish after asking the king and only being in his audience for like 10 seconds.
The other major issue is the entire kingdom is extremely entitled even though Magnifico literally made a utopia to live in. Also it's an option to give the wish to Magnifico. And they know most of them won't get granted. They have the right to leave if they didn't want to give up their wish. I'm not going front the soundtrack is stellar..... But the story..... I really wish (no pun intended) a lot of the original concepts ended up as the film instead of this. And knowing that this film's story is what caused it to not do well; means we're not getting another film (animation wise) like this. And the animation is amazing and it really made a lot of us miss hand drawn animation. It's sorta how what happened to Princess and the Frog. The problem was that it was a success just not a profit that Disney wanted. As they claimed it's because of the hand drawn animation..... It bugs me too because this was supposed to be a tribute to all of Disney . A lot of the OG concepts were aligned to the majority of Disney films from the past to now. Legit was so sad.

The main problem I have with this movie is that it could have been so much better. It's ok at it is, don't get me wrong, but it could've been so much more! The concept art that was revealed in the art books showed what we could've had. Personally, I'm upset that we could've had not only a villain couple, but a new Disney leading couple! "At all costs" is my fav song of the movie, but the demo is immensely better cause it was supposed to be a love song between Asha and Star. But instead of having a shapeshifting, human Star, we have marketable plushie star. That's just my issues, but the rest of the internet have other, more critical views.

The reason people are hating on this movie is because of what it could have been compared to what it was (referring to the scenes and plot points that Disney scrapped, like star boy). It’s also considered kind of a let-down since it’s supposed to be disneys 100 year anniversary, and the trailer was also not that great. All other critics are the ones that think too deep into the movie, relating it to topics of feminism and stuff. Critics and fans alike are also kind of tired of the “quirky” heroine theme Disney has been using. However, I think people forget that it’s only a kids movie, and that it doesn’t have to be perfect. I personally liked the movie, and while I understand that people have different opinions, the issues being pointed out are really not that big of a deal. Yeah it could have been better, but guess what? It’s not. Just cause it could have been better doesn’t mean that it’s horrible he way it is.

These are clever references indeed, but they are just Easter eggs though, not actual origin stories. The creators confirmed this. They even mention it in the artbook where they say that Asha's blue cloak is a tribute to Cinderella's fairy godmother. And that's good in my opinion. Asha is a fine character on her own; she does not need to be another character (plus, Cinderella takes place about 400 years after Wish; Asha is still a human and would not be alive by then). And the wall mirror from Snow White looks nothing like the small crystal where Magnifico is trapped in terms of shape, size and colour. It's a nice parallel universe homage but nothing more.

This movie wasn't as bad as some people made it out to be. Could it have been better? Yes. Was it 100th anniversary worthy? Not in my opinion.
I think it has the basic plot for a blockbuster but didn't quite hit the mark. The characters weren't that memorable especially compared to other Disney characters. Some parts of the plot weren't explored properly when they should have been.
I think the story would have been better if the King was either just completely misguided but did have the people's good in mind. I know it started that way, but then he went all magic crazy and obsessed with power.
It might have been better if the end was that Asha convinced the King that the people should be given their wishes back to pursue them. That yes, some wishes are dangerous, but that just meant his job should be to guide them and make sure they don't use bad magic wishes.
This or the King was completely evil from the start. Like the wishes and hopes and trust of his people was giving him power or eternal youth. That's why he kept them but only granted a few of them.
Or if they wanted to make him go from misguided to evil, what if the motivation was "I can't let her unleash the wishes and ruin Rosas." Or he goes crazy protective of the wishes and doesn't break or grant them because people can't be trusted with their own wishes.
Oh and what if the Star didn't come down because she made a wish? What if it came down to find out why no wishes were being granted. Why no one was wishing on stars anymore.
