New Height: The standard height of a wheel flange is 28.5mm. However, when this height increases to 35mm or more, it is termed as a "Deep Flange."
Repercussions:
A wheel with a deep flange, combined with vertical wear on the rail head, is prone to riding on fish plates and check/distance blocks.
This interaction can lead to disruptions in smooth rail travel, potentially causing significant maintenance issues and operational hazards.
Hollow Tyre:
Hollow Tyre Formation: Over time, tyres can wear in a way that creates a hollow groove, eventually leading to the formation of a false flange.
Repercussions:
A hollow tyre with a false flange can cause severe problems such as splitting open points while traveling in a trailing direction.
It may also experience sudden lifts and drops near the nose of crossings, which can destabilize the train and compromise passenger safety.
Both these conditions highlight the importance of regular maintenance and vigilant monitoring to ensure the safe and efficient operation of rail services.
