  • Indian Railways Wheel Defects and the Use of Tyre Defect Gauge for Detection of Defects on wheel
In Indian Railways, wheel defects are critical issues that can impact the safety and efficiency of train operations. Some common wheel defects include flat spots or flat tyre, deep flange, Hollow tyre, Less root radius, sharp flange, thin flange, shelled spots, thermal cracks, flange wear, and tread wear. These defects can lead to uncomfortable rides, increased stress on the rail track, and even derailments if left undetected.
To ensure safe train operations, railway staff use a specialized tool known as the Tyre Defect Gauge to detect and measure wheel defects. The tyre defect gauge helps in identifying wear and tear on the wheel tread and flange, allowing maintenance teams to check for defects like:
Flange Thickness: Ensures the flange has the required profile to guide the wheel on the track.
Flange Height: Measures if the flange height exceeds permissible limits, indicating excessive wear.
Tread Wear: Detects flattening or uneven wear on the wheel's surface.
Rim Thickness: Ensures the rim remains within safe operational limits to avoid cracking or breaking.
By using the tyre defect gauge regularly during maintenance checks, Indian Railways can detect wheel defects early, enabling timely repairs or replacements. This helps in reducing the risk of accidents, minimizing wear on the tracks, and ensuring smoother and safer journeys for passengers.
    thanks 🙏
