The tap water seems okay at 7.15. Fresh rainwater is "normally" slightly acidic so maybe yours has been sat around for a while and micro-organism growth has started. (they pee ammonia LOL.) The meter is normally calibrated with the buffer solution that is in the middle of the range that you want to measure with accuracy. 0 to 7pH uses 4.01: 5 to 9pH use 7.01: 7 to 14pH use 10.01. You'll need to combine the pH readings with the EC readings to give an indication of how readily available the nutrients are for plant take up. Most veg grow best in acidic soil at 5.8 to 6.5pH but will easily tolerate a neutral soil at 6.5 to 7.5pH. I am pretty sure that only brassicas and mushrooms like a starting point above 7 (7 to 8pH)
I've read this comment many times. I think I'm going to stay in the kiddy end of the pool with my water wings on this year lol. Great comment but sheesh I've got a lot to learn but will not rush !! Cheers for the comment Steve!! Jason and Colleen
WOW that is mind blowing how high your rain water PH is. I expected the plant foods to be high. Well all ya need now is to cut the plant food with water until you get a 6.8 PH then it will be ready for those amazing beds you always have. Stay safe my friend!
Looking forward to seeing how I get on in the future CB and Rene and I will be testing the soil in my beds to see how close they are to that magic number. ♻️Happy gardening, Terry King.
Not very technical myself, but will no doubt help me in the future to get my beds right for the plants that I am growing. ♻️Happy gardening, Terry King.
That’s a very interesting difference in the rain water. I’ve never considered this factor before. I’ll need to test mine periodically next year. We don’t get rain often so it sits a lot.
I only noticed this when I tryed to reduce the PH and it went up PPG so I will be using distilled water for my soil testing. ♻️Happy gardening, Terry King.
@@theborderer1302 Yes I use powdered Sulphur in the dirt garden too, but Vinegar is considered a herbicide in permaculture, and is often recommended by newbies in Aquaponics, but most people (including myself) who have tried it found it made the tanks, filters and beds slimy. It didn't click till I read your reply that Frank was talking earth beds too...
I use ferrous sulphate if I need to lower the pH a lot and/or quickly (seldom) but watch out for the phosphate levels as an excess of FeSO4 can affect the plant's ability to use phosphorous. Sulphur tends to be a slow, long term remedy as the element sulphur takes up to 9 months to be converted to sulphuric acid (which is what actually lowers the pH). Aluminium sulphate is as good as ferrous sulphate but over-usage will poison the soil. For containers: Old spent coffee grounds are good as they are 6.5pH ish but for a more rapid change use fresh brewed coffee which is 4.5pH (mix 50/50 with water)
Hi Terry, that’s a game changer for you, taking all the guess work out of the job, a real good tool, look forward to seeing more on this one, thanks for sharing, take good care kind regards alan…………………THE DAWN CHORUS PLOT 🌿
Hello Alan, its always been a guessing game with my liquid plant foods and they aren't far away from what I need, but very suprised with the green water. Just ordered some distilled water to do some soil testing. ♻️Happy gardening, Terry King.
Watched this twice, didn't help lol. This is fascinating and thank you for sharing. Will be interested to see how this evolves in your situation. I think we'll keep it as basic and simple as possible this year. My fear would be to get a little knowledge and do some serious harm to the soils trying to amend it with additives people are commenting about. You did fantastic 6 years ago and if we do half that well I'll be very satisfied :) Cheers Terry
Great timing Terry, my digital pH meter just packed it in yesterday. Those readings seem a little high, have you done a calibration run? Just sent Adwa an email about pricing and shipping.
Interesting, Terry Your measurements in water were really high. Hope the instrument is properly calibrated. I bought a cheap pH meter to stick in the ground to measure the pH in the soil, but found that it had to measure incorrectly. Will probably have to spend more money on one I can trust. I’m most interested in finding out what pH my soil has. Thanks for sharing. All the best🌱
I will be testing my soil with this Benni and I have ordered some distilled water to assist with this and after reading some comments will calibrate it just in case it didn't travel well. ♻️Happy gardening, Terry King.
@@terrykingsallotmentgardening yes I tested everything when I got one haha, it's a good idea to test the run off from your plants to see how much nutrients are in the soil before you apply another feed
Hi Terry, a useful looking bit of kit. The pH scale is logarithmic meaning that pH 7 is 10 times more alkaline than pH6 and 100 times more alkaline than pH5 etc. So, in practice, it's very difficult to lower pH by adding water. Adding an acid substance would be the way to lower pH. I've seen sulphur in various forms added as a soil amendment to lower pH. Does anyone have any other ideas?
This company has many devices and at the moment won't be getting anything else, but yes what a great product that would be. ♻️Happy gardening, Terry King.

I made the mistake of netting Mike and trapped the emerging moth inside so lost everything. Had mixed results and probably because I planted them in the same place the following year. Stopped growing leeks and haven't had any issues with any of my Alliums since then. ♻️Happy gardening, Terry King.
A useful piece of kit which most of us overlook. I use a similar item from BlueLabs. I have some sulphur powder, but sulphate of iron should work OK. Distilled white vinegar is used to lower the ph in my raised beds, along with powdered sulphur. I grow virtually nothing that wants alkaline soil.
Really? Don't you find the vinegar makes things slimey? I use phosphoric acid.
Cheers Frank.

Terry from what I understand log ash makes things more alkaline and I wonder what the pH of distilled water is
Babs, there are things that can distill across, and alter pH, but generally it would be 7.0...
I have ordered some distilled water to do some test on my soil so let's see if Tim is correct.
