  • A wild raven perched himself on our fence and squawked for over an hour. I went to see what was up with him and saw that he had four porcupine quills stuck in him, three in the side of his face and one in his wing. This video shows my Mom taking out the ones in his face. Very bizarre he let us get that close and even more bizzare he let my Mom pull the quills out. He hung around for the day and was gone the next. Best of luck Wilfred (yeah, I named him) lol

    • @thatroxxguy
      @thatroxxguy 2 года назад +98

      The brain is very complex and there are multiple sections with different functions, that all develop in a different way depending on the animal. Raven are called "intelligent" because they are capable of solving problems, not many animals (except humans) are able to solve. That, however, does not mean they are able to understand the same things we understand. Because of how complex the brain is, those 2 abilities (could) be completly independent from each other. Like an A.I., for example, is able to solve multiple problems, but is not aware of itself or other beings. This is also the reason, why I really hate the "as intelligent as a X-year old kid"- comparison. It's really misinformative and not a good picture of how an animals intelligence works.

    • @dabberino
      @dabberino 2 года назад +25

    The intelligence on display here is so impressive. This bird A.) conceptualized a possible future where it wasn't in pain from the quills B.) understood a human could help with it C.) decided that pain it would feel getting them pulled was worth the pain it would not feel in the future D.) was able to hold onto this abstract conception of the future as it underwent the pain and stayed through it because of a value judgement it made. I know it seems so obvious, but that says SO many things about how smart it is.

    Oh, that is so fantastic!! Your mom behaved just right with him/her. But also, he/she knew what needed to be done. Crows and ravens have very good recognition skills and memories. It could be that that particular one or a few of them in his flock, knew that someone at that location was good to them. So he thought to come there for help. It doesn't seem possible at first, but there have been studies now showing that they do indeed behave in this manner. They are the only bird that uses a tool. And one of the only animals that uses a tool within a series of complex maneuvers to accomplish a goal. I love crows. They just feel right to/ for me. And they tend to be very trusting of me in my city. Outside my city though they treat me like everyone. :)

    One of the most remarkable videos on RUclips.
    For a crow to trust a human to remove the quills shows how desperate it was for help, but also that it knew humans would be intelligent enough to help. The key ingredient in intelligence is the ability to recognize intelligence when it exists in others. That crow knew there was only ONE animal that could potentially help it. We know crows are intelligent, but crows also know that WE'RE intelligent. They know we're not like other animals.
