Today we're taking a look at the Royal Snow, a tire manufactured by Royal Black. This is a solid economical winter tire that offers fantastic performance in Alberta winters, and at Canada Tire Pro we recommend all of our customers run specialist snow tires such as these during winter months.
When you consider how long and harsh Alberta winters can be, having a tire that is designed to perform maximally in adverse weather conditions will give you fantastic peace of mind and keep your safer while driving.
So what does make this particular tire so effective in wintery conditions?
Firstly, like all winter tires, the rubber compound used in these tires is specially formulated to remain soft and malleable in the cold temperatures of winter. Soft rubber is exteremley important when it comes to traction and grip, with softer rubber offering more surface contact with the ttire and the road giving more traction. A typical all-season tire will have rubber that goes extremely hard when cooled to low temperatures and this is what causes slips and slides on ice.
Secondly, the tread pattern is designed to help the tire excel in snow and ice. The first thing to note is that this is a directional tire. A directional tire is particularly effective in wintery conditions as the angled tread acts like a paddle to scoop up the loose snow and slush and deposit it out the back of the tire. We can also see the sidewall has these large serrated blocks - the serrated blocks are more effective in wintery conditions as they act like a gear to grip into the slush and snow and increase traction.
Next, we can note the three lateral grooves which run all the way around the tire. The purpose of these grooves is to give water a chance to collect and then quickly dispel out the side of the sidewall. Without this mechanism there is a propensity for water to collect under the tire which is the main cause of hydroplaning and skidding in wet conditions.
Finally, when taking a close look at the tire we can see it is completely covered in these small wavy indents known sipes. A sipe is essential for a winter tire as it allows the rubber to split into smaller sections and thus increases the contact area of the tire with the road. With more rubber touching the road, it increases traction and grip and reduces breaking distance.
This tire is one of our best sellers at Canada Tire Pro and customers love the performance on offer at the fraction of the price of other big-name brands. If you'd like to find out more about these tires, or see them for yourself, feel free to drop in store today or give us a call.
