Thanks. Very good info, as usual. I’m actually doing this exact same thing - cutting down American Elm trees and making chairs - on my Iowa Plains series! They’re just a bit of a nightmare to cut down.
So place a Max length lodgepole pine from the landscaping menu and cut it down into 2x 12m lengths plus a 10m tip, chuck it in a container is 6888l over 20x profit from the cost of placing.
Based on this alone I'm betting hands down productions is the way to go and selling is a secondary thing after the production chain is going (Still no other uses for woodchips?)
What log length is ideal for the Old Sawmill to produce enough long planks, and does it have to be American Elm or will any tree type do? Should I focus on finding trees that already exist on the map that are long enough to cut exclusively into long planks or grow them?

American elm is by far best for volume, but for selling wood directly (rather than going to productions) you just want whatever can be cut by a forestry harvester, don't necessarily need the harvester, but length and straightness matter
Thanks for the heads up. I personally will avoid this I want a challenge to make money. For me this seems too easy and pointless doing anything else. If all you want is a crap load of money then you might aswell just use the Government Subsidy mod... or just use EDT and give yourself 999.999.999

I usually plant them close to the drop point and then just fall them there. In addition you can grab them with the winch and drag it to sawmill

7 lodgepole pine, cut into 6 m lengths, will fill two 6 m containers, which on normal will get you around 100,000 $
