  • The Sledge has been through a lot of repairs, and minor upgrades. But we finally found the issue for all the spur gear and pinion issues. The Hot Racing spur gear teeth had some minor issues, but it was enough to be causing an issue. I wanna say it was causing excessive heat, and the mesh between the spur and pinion wasn’t perfect. During the RC Clash event, we installed a Traxxas Hardened Spur, and. Traxxas Hardened Pinion. The Sledge was much quieter, and performed great. We also removed some of the 20M weight fluid in the center differential, and added a little 1M weight. This took some of the stress off the drivetrain.
Below are the parts we used to correct the issues and there links:

My hot racing spur gear is about a year old now but I also did the hot racing motor mount also. No problems with either and also alot smoother running

Something was wrong with the teeth on my spur gear, that’s probably why I was going through pinions. Still like Hot Racing gears

    Belted badlands !

I’ve heard the Badlands aren’t as good anymore since Horizon bought ProLine. Are you running the Badlands and on which RC?

I didn't like the badlands at all. I think longevity would be fine but the grip wasn't there compared to the backflips. The sledgehammers would be great if they didn't Balloon so easy and get floaty at high speed but the backflips transformed its handling awesome. I also have the hot racing washer/mesh adjusters and that were supposed to be for 15t pinion and ran it with hot racing spur and Robinson racing pinion and just seemed to loose of a mesh. So I tried a 16t pinion and mesh and the running sound was perfect. It's probably had 12-15 packs through it now and it's been perfect . I thought my temps would be hot but it's been great but I do have a pro tek fan mounted on the factory motor mount also. I also have the chassis skid plate and I actually think it helps out with chassis strength also. Definitely happy with that upgrade. About 3 packs ago I decided to do a maintenance teardown so I changed out the front and rear diff gears to the traxxas machine cut upgrades and put all TRX drive cups in front , center , and rear. I did change out servo after my third pack to a powerhobby 729mbl. And made it most of the summer until I noticed the servo saver spring getting weak so I through in the hot racing bellcrank and that combination made the steering perfect! The response and turning ability even in grass is awesome ! I'm not a brand specific guy but this really is one great car now that checks all the boxes for me.

That’s funny we used the same brand gears, skid plate, machined gears, and yes I already bought the TRX drive cups I just haven’t installed yet because I’m waiting for stock cups to wear out. I’m gonna go with the Arrma Backflips for sure. Thank you for watching and the comment.

@redbanditracing on my sledge. I started to watch your videos bc I recently got a sledge about 2 months ago but out the gate did stuff the first week.. that being the Badlands MX38 HP 3.8 BELTED tires

I highly recommend getting the RPM front bumper. Definitely before you get a new body.

Wow, didn’t know they made one. I’ve seen people use the slash bumper, or a noodle zip tied to the shock tower. Good to know, thank you. Definitely getting it

Didnt you have a traxxas hardened spur in here a long time ago or is this the first one? What happened to that one?
I just bought a hot racing spur for my sledge and the first thing i noticed was the strange machining marks on the teeth.. not sure if that was by design or if that is a fault in the machining process.. either way, you want those teeth to be as smooth as possible..
Also, i appreciate the process that you are taking your sledge in but i think the lack of a good chassis and sliding motor mount are the source of a lot of issues.. all i do is jump my sledge (50-80 foot jumps) and haven't had a single issue with gear mesh or motor placement..
Also, these bulkheads stretch and deform because Traxxas made them from the same plastic as the rest of the truck.. i have a ton of before and after video of the side play that happens on a bulkhead with about 20 hard runs... at a minimum i always recomend doing an aluminum rear bulkhead to keep your gear mesh tight. The front doesn't take the same beating but still eventuality stretches..
Thanks for all the great sledge content..

The pinion chipped the first week I had it, then the spur gear chipped. I replaced both with Traxxas hardened gears. Then something got caught between the spur and pinion so I replaced both with Hot Racing and Robinson Racing gears. And YES strange marks on the teeth face with the Hot Racing, I bet it’s a flaw. Honestly don’t know why the Sledge goes through so many pinions. Everyone talks about how many packs they can get before replacing any gears. I think the stock motor mount, and center diff housing is part of the issue. I will eventually goes with M2C to replace both. When this chassis bends again I will get the M2C as well. I definitely don’t think this truck should be labeled as XMaxx tough as Traxxas says it is.

I’d love to see any videos of the Sledge you have. I’d like to see what’s you’ve done to it.

I have had my best luck so far oddly enough with the traxxas hardened stock 13 tooth pinion with the stock spur.. I have somewhere in the neighborhood of just over 20 packs through the truck and have moderate wear on both.. I also ditched the stock chassis and motor mount though after the first couple of packs and did the m2c chassis and motor mount so I think that's why I have gotten the longevity out of the stock pinion and spur.. I moved that pinion and spur to one of my other sledges and it's still going..
I tried a new 15 tooth machined traxxas pinion with a new stock spur and went with the max6 punch level 3 and stock motor and that was terrible.. I got 4 whole runs on that pinion before it ground itself to nothing and it also wore the spur out in the same amount of time.. Such a shame because that combination was the sweet spot for power with still managable temps..
Now i am trying a max6 with the 1650kv 4985 motor with a tekno 16 tooth pinion and traxxas hardened spur and 3 packs in and no wear at all.. very happy.. rips pretty good and low temps.. more torquey than all out speed.. if it doesn't snow here I would like to try the 17 and the 18 tooth pinion just for science..
I have tons of skatepark and jumping footage but I am not well spoken on video so I don't post anything.. I am on the sledge Facebook page though if you are there and have 3 of my sledge builds on there along with some bashing video.. I document quite a bit of stuff in my builds.. I might be the only Jason on that page that actually posts stuff. Lol.
Thanks again for all your sledge content.. I enjoy how you present your repairs and stuff..

My HR spur took a poop after about 5 sets of batteries.. I run a HR motor mount. Was wondering what did it as well ..

I think the teeth get this pattern that maybe creates too much heat, or puts stress on the pinion. I don’t have this issue with the Traxxas hardened spur.

1M weight in the center diff?

    • @redbanditracing
      @redbanditracing  4 месяца назад

You can add 1M weight to the 20M to thin it out.
