      65bug519.... No, what they "beat up on".... were 6V71's Not 6V92's..... and 6 & 4-71's during the late 1940's through late 1960's and early 1970's.

      A lot of them were 8V71 Detroits, without turbos. That city busses here in Milwaukee used them until the late 80's-early 90's. Loud, slow, and smoky. The drivers just floored them, and they growled in protest..

    They are very reliable engines (Detroit diesel ). My dad used to sell them, along with Allison transmission to companies that made fire trucks, school buses, city transit buses, etc. They made versions for the military. This was back in the day that Detroit Diesel engines and Allison transmission was basically made by the same company, General Motors, although the factories were in different locations. They don't make them like they used to, unless it's this guy (rebuilds). I don't live far from where they still build Allison transmissions today, in Indianapolis.

      Scott Miller..... Detroit Diesel is currently Still producing 6V53's and 8V92's for the US military and other military's around the world. They were also still producing 8V71T/TA's up until 2013. Yes, they were, and still are... Very Reliable engines... Much More so, than the overly complicated 4 cycles of today.

    The blowers are for aspiration, the motor is boosted by feeding the intake to the blowers from turbo's. The rest I like, tidy build with very nice detailing. And by the way, have some CO2 fire extinguishers standing around to spray into the air intake in the case of a runaway. That stalls the motor and don't mess anything up. Nice vid on the Detroit, they are awesome classics.

    How much more efficient is the DECC controlled engine compared to the old non computer 6V92 ? How difficult was it to adapt this engine to modern electronic engine management systems or is it now a much different engine than the original.

    • @andrewking9761
      @andrewking9761 4 года назад +4

      Sorry mate but a TT on a Detroit Diesel stands for "Tailored torque" and A for aftercooling. Sorry to be smartarse but I've read hundreds of Detroit truck books etc owned a really good 6-71 in a truck I was restoring at my mums place . That ended up in the scrap heap just after I converted it to hydraulic steering being an old trruck because these rich arseholes do whatever they want because they they know we can't afford lawyers like they can to fight anything that that they do. Never mind my next project will survive and this time I'll get a 6-71T in a medium sized semi like an R600 mack something toitally different. Cheers from Australia

    How did you mod a DDEC v92? It isn’t as simple as injector + turbo changes on a mechanical. Been trying to upgrade my 6V for awhile. Injector choices aren’t as straightforward or easy to come by.

    Setting aside fuel use, what were the practical advantages of a Detroit Diesel 2 stroke apart from their reliability. I am guessing power for their dimensions.

      @@RayRay5776.... you and every other coach owner... but, just one problem... older coaches have an antithetical "issue" with high output engines - poor radiator air flow and not enough coring.... that, and depending on what year coach you have... the trans & drive train may not be able to handle it.

    • @raygale4198
      @raygale4198 3 года назад +2

      Not sure if it will fit in a cabover, but a 16V92 TT will fit in a '82 bonneted Peterbuilt, ;-)
      A farmer friend of mine has converted an industrial DDEC engine back into mechanical governing and after lengthening the chassis and doubling the chassis rails to handle the extra weight and torque it's nearly finished. I have to make the electrics work now, it was an American left hand drive with a 6 cyl electronic Cat engine. It's now right hand drive in Australia with the GM. It has been built to 'road train' spec and will be triple tipper bodies on dollies with a GCM weight around 110 Tons. He grows grain and there are some hills between between his farm and the rail silos, he likes to keep to a schedule.

      Horse-A-Holics Anonymous But look at this engine. It has literally no smoke at all. Why don't they R&D low emission engines. Since 2 stroke has better torque cuz there's a stroke on every revolution, if its developed it could be more fuel efficient.

      TT in Detroit Diesel parlance means Tailored Torque. It was part of DDEC (Detroit Diesel Electronic Control). It doesn't mean twin turbo though in generator and marine application they did have twin turbo engines.
      Here's a (top link below) 16V71 NA (NA = Detroit Diesel parlance for Naturally Aspirated). After watching this fantastically interesting teardown you'll be better informed than 98% of the morons making stupid comments on here:

    Two stroke engines, gas or diesel can't meet modern emissions regulations for the US. That means no more two stroke diesels or outboard motors or motorcycles with two stroke technology. I am not aware of two stroke engines being used in aircraft.
