CLIP DESCRIPTION:
William 'D-Fens' Foster (Michael Douglas) is approached by two Mexican gang members who don't take kindly to strangers.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
It's just not William Foster's (Michael Douglas) day. Laid off from his defense job, Foster gets stuck in the middle of the mother of all traffic jams. Desirous of attending his daughter's birthday party at the home of his ex-wife (Barbara Hershey), Foster abandons his car and begins walking, encountering one urban humiliation after another (the Korean shopkeeper who obstinately refuses to give change is the worst of the batch). He also slowly unravels mentally, finally snapping at a fast-food restaurant that refuses to serve him breakfast because it's "too late." Running amok with an arsenal of weapons at the ready, Foster -- also known as "D-FENS" because of his vanity license plate -- rapidly becomes a source of terror to some, a folk hero to others. It's up to reluctant cop Prendergast (Robert Duvall), on the eve of his retirement, to bring D-FENS down.

You're not the only one.

The older I get, the more I understand this character lmao!!
I sure hope not. He's psychotic. He ends the movie trying to kill his family, then commits suicide by cop when that fails.
Wow, you are truly terrible at reading people.
No, it was very strongly implied that the cop was exactly right.
Go back and watch it again, in particular, the scene at the plastic surgeon's house.

You're meant to be seeing signs of severe instability, and comments like that, well... Warning signs. This is a glimpse into the head of a school shooter.
@Galaxi That's the trick with English, some words have multiple definitions.
OP used the word to refer to a sense of sympathy, of relating to him, identifying with him, considering his actions and decisons reasonable.
You use the word to refer to familiarity with his character and propensities. They're two different things. I know the character, but I don't relate to him. I can see why he does what he does but I don't identify with his choices, and I don't consider them reasonable.
In other words, the more you understand the character, the less you understand him. :D Isn't English fun?
@GalaxiOh, I didn't think that would happen.
In fact, I would go so far as to say he probably hasn't seen the movie, and has probably just seen the clips on youtube that echo right-leaning talking points.
@Galaxi All I'm saying is, this guy ain't batman. He's the lone gunman that batman catches in the first act.
When younger you think this is a movie about a guy going insane. When you get older you understand that this is a man's sane reaction to an insane world. At least that's the wisdom I saw in this movie.
@Liam Castillo the store wasn't totally destroyed just a little messed up and the golfer was like 95 and waiting for death, hell he was on heart medication. This movie most definitely shows a sane man in a insane world.

When you get older.. you can truly understand, and even empathize with this movie and the main character. Very relatable when you reach adulthood
Especially nowadays with the pressures that society puts on us now more than ever over our appearance, our social status, our financial standing. This is an unfair, cruel, and dishonest world that we live in, and this man decided he wasn't going to pretend anymore. He isn't okay, and he's not going to pretend that he is anymore. He's done allowing people to walk all over him. The only difference between him and us is that he actually had the balls to take action. There is something special about this movie, there's something satisfying about seeing him fight back when all he wanted to do was be left alone.

Yes every person has a melting point. It's how much the body can take it, every person's body is different. Sadly, many people don't realize this. If a bunch of person are bullying their co-worker, let's say Michael Douglas here; they keep bullying him, tormenting him, mistreating him, humiliating him, especially when he has other problems to deal with too, it will eventually hit his melting point and will go into a state what many called insanity.

This character and this movie hits hard for me and for a lot of people, there is something deeply special about this film. It hits on something that is uncomfortable for many to talk about. There are a lot of people out there who have been pushed around but are just too nice to push back. Good people get the short end of the stick, and the bad ones get the rewards. This man was one of the very few that decided to push back, enough was enough, and there are people out there right now that are just one bad move away from fighting back, from ending it all. There was something uncomfortably satisfying about seeing this man get revenge on the people that pushed his buttons.
This movie is worth every penny.
To me, the funniest thing about this scene is the he was going to leave the briefcase behind ! He starts to walk away and they stopped him. He didn't care about the worthless briefcase and his lunch. Well written lines, and the sarcastic way that Michael Douglas responds and how he delivers these lines are memorable. He clearly doesn't care about his life anymore, and he doesn't care what people think about how he responds to them either. He's done being nice to bad people, he's not going to be Mr. Nice Guy anymore, and there are people out there right now who are one bad move away from being this guy. This movie may be a dark comedy on the surface, but it really is a deep movie that anyone who's been forgotten can relate to.

Tbh I felt like my reaction time/hand coordination improved a lot after learning how to do rollovers and other tricks with the balis... Oh I also lost a lot of blood and almost cut my toe off, but hey, was worth it.
Masao3k “balisong” knife, pendejo güey....
I think it the speed it opens up matches with what he said
I remember watching this when I was only 21 years old and I even related to it back then. Today I relate to it much, much more.
He put so much fear into the guy in the red flannel that after he threw the bat that could've been retrieved, dude STILL ran!😂🤣😂🔥💯🎉

Tali Sparta imagine if Michael Douglas played the joker

Edgy
These guys probably all think you’re edgy because they think this is from the movie Joker instead of a quote from a fantastically written Alan Moore batman comic
@@pterojacktylus2475 no hes posting quotes acting like he's deep who cares who wrote it .
I remember seeing this flick at the movies when I was a little kid. When he chased after him yelling “you forgot the briefcase!” everyone in the theater stood up and clapped and cheered.
I saw this with my niece and her friend at the theater at the time of it's release, and boy it was intense on the big screen. But that "you forgot the briefcase!!!" was my favorite line!
1:58 fails to open a butterfly lol
1:32 I know he had already trashed up the convenience store, but I think this was the turning point for him. You could tell he crossed the point of no return here.
Nah, he could get away with beating a few Mexicans. Self defense.
Shooting up the burger king, now that was the point of no return.
Yep, point of no return at 1:32. It would've been my point of no return as well.
@@billlupin8345 gangbangers (it doesn't matter that they're Mexicans)
It really doesn't. He makes it quite clear later on he doesn't care who the bystander is. Innocent or guilty, mexican or white, woe betide anyone that's near this guy when he freaks out.
This was just a well-timed freakout, such that nobody could pick up yet just how screwed up he is. @@nadirrabah6756
Alright gonna say it now SPOILERS, just in case anyone is coming around and wants to watch the movie.
The actual turning point for William was when he lost rights to his daughter and the America's national defense fired him.
2:51 my favorite line in the film.
I always love the 360 angle shot where they circle around him like a vulture. Well shot and acted.
Little did they know they circled a lion.
Pissing ground or whatever the damn thing is.... Best line to me :)
Keep in mind same guy who directed batman & robin directed this
How did that happen?
Still boggles my mind. I think I remember he apologized for Batman & Robin. Haha.
The Director has range i suppose, I guess he was capable of making two kinds of movies
an lost boys, 8 mm, phantom of the opera, phone booth. and I'll say that Batman Foerever isn't as bad as they say it is.
Batman and Robin was horrid, but he has a resume to back him up. He aint a hack if thats what youre getting at.
I forgot how good this movie is. I like the big-budget FX extravaganzas, but there's a lot you can do with just a simple premise, a good script, and good acting.
"YOU FORGOT THE BRIEFCASE!" I love this movie 😂
I love how they circle him like sharks at the beginning
They thought he was a seal
