- Sona Jobarteh performed in Weimar on invitation of the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar and its UNESCO Chair of Transcultural Music Studies (TMS). The TMS Chair regularly invites artists to bring the musicology students into contact with various musical cultures for inspiration and exchange.
Sona Jobarteh is the first female Kora virtuoso to come from a west African Griot family. The Kora is one of the most important instruments belonging to the Manding peoples of West Africa (Gambia, Senegal, Mali, Guinea and Guinea-Bissau). It belongs exclusively to griot families, and usually only men who are born into these families have the right to take up the instrument professionally. Sona Jobarteh combines various genres of African Music and western musical elements.

Sona and her band will be at Music Haven in Schenectady, NY at 7 pm on July 23, 2023. It just kills me that I will be visiting from Virginia but cannot attend because I already have an opera ticket for that afternoon in a town 90 minutes away, and will be taking with me two people I’ll have to drop off before I could hope to get there. Maybe I’ll get lucky! The kora is a magical instrument.
What an extremely talented beautiful African woman, thanx sista Sonna for being one of the most dedicated Afrio folk music internatiinal artists...I lived in the Gambia in the 80S and yiur music always takes me right back to the Gambia and beautiful Senegal, thanks.

Sona and her band (maybe not exactly this one) performed on Sunday June 30 at David Lam Park for the last day of the 2019 Vancouver International Jazz Festival. I was mesmerized! I had never seen or even heard of this instrument. the Kora, before seeing her perform. I heard that her stock of CDs totally sold out at the performance, and I fully understand why! She's a delight to listen to, even for an old jazz-rock aficionado like me. If you ever get an opportunity to hear her live, go! It will be time well spent!
She is really the finest.
When you understand that traditionaly... this instrument was for men only in the african villages ... like a legacy from father To son. And then Sona arrives and decides to break the rules being one of the first woman able to play Kora! You just get on your knees and say "wow ... goddess!"

What an amazing combination of musical genres! Sona, Maurice, Andi and Mouhamadou demonstrate the "teamwork" of a great musical ensemble in this performance. Such beauty!
My daughter (three years old) awakened me this morning singing the burden in her early moroccan languge " banaya mamayana" and i think she succeeded as she made me dance.
Sona Jobarteh can involve anyone to the music and gather a melting pot of listeners dancers from around the world.
