Here in Romania we have a deep rooted folklore, traditions, music and rituals but nothing feels as close and familiar as some of the traditional African songs and voices sound. Is not even a specific part of Africa, either is Western or Southern...it's something in the tone of the voice, in the instrument used, in the scales or language, like all the human history is projected o in the back of your head and all the grief and the struggle and the nature and wilderness until the present times are revealed to you as a reminder of what you've become in hundreds and thousands of years. The songs might mean nothing relevant, or the lyrics, not even care, is the package that sends you back in time and pulls you back to your office chair like you would've time traveled even for 5 minutes.
You feel that way because you are human... The common language of nature that we live in is still understood by you. You are human and you are still in tune with the essence of nature. This essence transcends race, distance or time, this essence binds the fabric of our existence and consciousness together. I have a feeling that you likely will be an environment-conscious being, one of those who believe in clean unpolluted, air, land and water... You're human, a good human.
Sona Jobarteh is a pioneer artist. The Kora is traditionally played only by men, and she is (or used to be) the only wonman playing the instrument professionally. And she is awesome; her voice and the Kora are in sync, becoming one instrument. I love all music from Western Africa - The Gambia, Senegal, Cabo Verde, Morocco, Mali, etc. Peace and love from Florida, USA
There are no words that can fully describe how beautiful her voice is. She mesmerizes with her singing. Looking at Sona you forget about everything. She is beautiful! She is gorgeous! It combines feminine tenderness and some kind of ancient power.

As a person who has had the opportunity to hang out extensively with jalis (griots) in The Gambia, I am delighted to see a woman performing and popularizing this wonderful instrument and West African music. Women jalis (jalimussolu) are usually singers and don't play kora. It is wonderful to see a woman as such a master of the kora. Her singing style is not traditional. Rotimi fash very true bro....I am a computer music maker but I wish I had my own live band to do what I sample.....the computer sound is washed out...when I look for musicians to group with or hire, the money is too much
Nothing wrong with computer music if it sounds good. There are very good computer sampled music that are as good as this. Many of the African greats use it. A good book on an electronic tablet is still good.
Just amazing!!! no words..... so proud to see one of the super great female African artists showing the world the magnificence of my beloved Africa, its hypnotizing music, greatly gifted people and wide and diverse culture. VIVA AFRICA!!

Yeah, just stop listening to all mainstream music, there is so much to discover. Music from the hearts of the artists to our hearts, not only made for the wallets of the "producers". If you can, please support real artists and don't buy crap you don't need. Without art, mankind is lost.
Just a poor American, and this "speaks" to me. soo beautiful..wanting.. the universal language of music. The true voice and speaking from an African Drum!!
this is incredibly beautiful. Without the african influence in music I wouldn't have choose to study and dedicate my life to music, its the part that I most like from music. Thank you africa, I hope one day Europe and the occident pay for the historical disasters
Because of you...I am falling in love with all of Africa's rich, dangerously beautiful and deep deep deep sounds...Sounds so new to my ears....Both musically and vocally...My hands are moving, feet moving, body shacking and heart pumping blood a bit too fart...Every track....Thank you Sona and everyone that made this a musical experience:-)))
I have been in love from my childhood . The music is the way to connect with almighty creator of this universe. Everyone is singing in their own way including birds, bees and so on and on. If there’s any way to eliminate animosity between nations, we all need to let the musicians have freedom to come together to play their own way to make us feel comfortable and happy to see each other and sit together. Music has no boundaries regardless of the language. Be happy to the fullest with joy.
Oh!!!!! I am so proud of my people's music!!!!!! that timing and beat!!!! she has a Beautiful voice!!!!!! Love their instruments!!!!!! I am so proud to be 80% West African/Mali!!!!!

Eso! Yo naci, en los EU, pero si me de cuenta de la cultura magnifica de la gente Africana alli en Colombia, cuando visite de nina, a ese pais de mi padre.
The richness of western (white) culture would be nothing without having stolen and adopted so much from African culture. Same with even richer Hispanic culture! I'm white btw
Listening again. What an amazing group of musicians, listening carefully, playing what is needed and not overplaying. They are relaxed as if they are in your home. Ths is how it is done. Can you imagine if they recorded Simon and Garfunkel or Paul Simon's music or the Beatles? WOW! Sublime musicianship on display here. Yes!
You can say that again my Brother. Wow!! He is so accurate and Rhythmic and smiling. Just having an incredible time. Man Sona is beautiful and exceptionally talented. Blown away!
To be honest, these musicians are in love with the way they look at each other! They literally understand each other. Smiles, head movement, nods... This can be nothing but love! Thank you, Sona! 💕
The universality of music always astounds me. You don't need to understand the language to understand the essence and heart of the beat. Music is certainly one of the highlights of life on this rock! Beautiful concert...

Glad you were excited and exposed to her talent. Europe have been enjoying the traditional talented African music for great time. Type Kora on you tube and you will discover another world of story tellers. 👍✌️

I accidentally stumbled across this while searching for African songs and dance. Wow! I just learned something new about the Kora instrument. I'm now a new fan of Sona Jobareth and can hardly wait to see her perform live. After checking the website, I found that she's performing at the Arden Gild, in Delaware, April 5th, 2024. I'm buying our tickets now just in case it get sold out. I've never heard of the Arden Gild in Delaware, but I will find it, even though it's a 2 hour ride from where I live in mid-Maryland.
you will have a blast, have fun.
Me too, the first note I heard from that guitar. I was mesmerized. They are incredible

This is our culture, not computer music. She was groundend on earth. Our ancestors is with you
Rotimi fash very true bro....I am a computer music maker but I wish I had my own live band to do what I sample.....the computer sound is washed out...when I look for musicians to group with or hire, the money is too much
maybe you know the orginal lyrics of Mamamuso ?
Nothing wrong with computer music if it sounds good. There are very good computer sampled music that are as good as this. Many of the African greats use it. A good book on an electronic tablet is still good.

This speaks to my soul. Medicine for the soul. A break from the monotony that american music has become. Thanks yall
Thanks the RUclips
Yeah, just stop listening to all mainstream music, there is so much to discover. Music from the hearts of the artists to our hearts, not only made for the wallets of the "producers". If you can, please support real artists and don't buy crap you don't need. Without art, mankind is lost.
Well said.

Because of you...I am falling in love with all of Africa's rich, dangerously beautiful and deep deep deep sounds...Sounds so new to my ears....Both musically and vocally...My hands are moving, feet moving, body shacking and heart pumping blood a bit too fart...Every track....Thank you Sona and everyone that made this a musical experience:-)))
you want to correct the way your heart is beating, sir.... just change the r to an s... ;-) Otherwise, yes... spot on
I have been in love from my childhood .
Damn, a typo. Thank you for spotting my mistake.
I think I got busted. Yep a typo. Thanks for spotting this.

Long life to African people, the richness of caribbean culture wouldn't be anything without you, greetings from Colombia!

Why is this kind of Music the odd off? Much better than most crap on Tv/Radio.
Yes!
Totaly agreed with u
this guy has a Ph.D. in beating drums!! he is so connected to his instruments, they are just an extension of his thoughts... amazing!!

Yes, the public is trying to keep the rythm with clapping but they can't keep it up :-)

The universality of music always astounds me. You don't need to understand the language to understand the essence and heart of the beat. Music is certainly one of the highlights of life on this rock! Beautiful concert...

@Raiders Transport.. That's a powerful comment indeed. Very true!🙏😍
Yes!! I have no idea what she is singing but it's so beautiful. I listen to this video often to help my kids relax for a nap.
I meditate everyday and a lot, and with her music on or somebody else like her, and I don't think somebody like her exist, I even told that to one of her drums player right before, they were playing at place des arts tonight
I just saw Sona interview on 60 Minutes in the USA and her music and the Kora. At first I was thinking of Ravi Shankar but this is different sound and her voice is great. Such beautiful, peaceful music for these times. I’m sure her Star will rise even more now.
Glad you were excited and exposed to her talent. Europe have been enjoying the traditional talented African music for great time. Type Kora on you tube and you will discover another world of story tellers. 👍✌️
Me too saw this on 60 minutes and just had to find her on YT . God bless her. She is a trailblazer one of a kind.
That's how I found out about her, 60 minutes I've shared her with my sister and daughter ❤️. This is now what I put on when I go to bed

I stumbled on this pure niceness. This is how music should be simple, soulful and minimalist. No computer generated stuff. The live audience must have been very lucky to attend such a concert. That drummer though is over to the moon.
Afrikan music has soul. Sona is a Gambian pride, she is a national treasure. Her sound gives me a strange feeling, like my kundalini is waking up. 🇬🇲❤💙💚

Beautiful. All such excellent musicians working so harmoniously together.
My forefather's body may have been stolen from Ghana, and my feet are far from the shores of the Akan, but when I hear Africa's rhythm it stirs my soul and the African spirit within me is rekindled. "Africa Unite"
