Sona Jobarteh is a trailblazer in the world of African music. She is the first woman from a griot family of West Africa to master the kora, a 21-stringed harp that is traditionally played only by men. The kora is a key instrument in the Manding culture, which spans across several countries, including Gambia, Senegal, Mali, Guinea and Guinea-Bissau. Sona Jobarteh's music blends elements of different African genres with western influences, creating a unique and captivating sound.

I am from Austria. For the last 5 years before my retirement I worked for UNESCO, mainly in Sierra Leone and Senegal. Dakar was an eye opener for me, having previously spent many years in East Africa. Fantastic people, fantastic music, fantastic food. Thank you for a wonderful time.
One of the best live shows videos here on youtube ever !

i am from morocco and proud to be African, such a sensational performance, pure and simple not as the new music. i believe that the "Kora " instrument is made at heaven! very relaxing and calming... God bless Africa!
It's the bass.
But remember, you too have an amazing lady singer + her band in your country : OUM !!! I specially love her song WALI , watch the video of the last HERTME-festival on RUclips, she‘s great, her voice beautiful and she herself is a beauty too.
I fully agree: God bless Africa and it‘s people !
@@gaessli6904 yesss she is really a genius , i suggest you also to watch SHINE by Oum,
and also to check HINDI ZAHRA, she is a moroccan amazigh singer, and she has a very good music

God bless Morocco 🇲🇦 and always Africa united,pan- africanism is the key,the political union of all the indigenous inhabitants of Africa.
real music without so much background without so much computer played by real musicians…. long live the music so true
2024 and I just now learned of this exquisite music. 🖤🎶
My mother just put me on tonight! 😮…so beautiful!!
This is our culture, not computer music. She was groundend on earth. Our ancestors is with you
Rotimi fash very true bro....I am a computer music maker but I wish I had my own live band to do what I sample.....the computer sound is washed out...when I look for musicians to group with or hire, the money is too much
maybe you know the orginal lyrics of Mamamuso ?
Nothing wrong with computer music if it sounds good. There are very good computer sampled music that are as good as this. Many of the African greats use it. A good book on an electronic tablet is still good.

Sona Jobarteh is a pioneer artist. The Kora is traditionally played only by men, and she is (or used to be) the only wonman playing the instrument professionally. And she is awesome; her voice and the Kora are in sync, becoming one instrument.
I love all music from Western Africa - The Gambia, Senegal, Cabo Verde, Morocco, Mali, etc.
Peace and love from Florida, USA
It really is a soul cleansing music and she is a GEM!🙏
thaths true that is soul got tears in my blues eyes
There are no words that can fully describe how beautiful her voice is. She mesmerizes with her singing. Looking at Sona you forget about everything. She is beautiful! She is gorgeous! It combines feminine tenderness and some kind of ancient power.
QUEEN OF GAMBIA???
@@alexandrzemlyanih2439 Feminine "ancient power". (!). 🌱🌿
Sona, most authentic female musician ever heard, you vibrate Africa. The Creator in you n through you more n more, to highest manifestation, you are truly amazing, blessed and prosperous. I call on all of Africa to support Sona and her dream, let's buy her music. Sona continue in this authentic way of expressing Africa to the world, love your awesomeness!
I'm from Gabon, but it's just impressive to see a woman playing the kora. Very good performance Sona.

When you just randomly come across a piece of music and sounds close to you, just like that, your heart starts to dance, your head starts to bob on your shoulders, your body follows the rhythm and suddenly you realize, no matter where you are from, you can never escape your roots...mama Africa, the cradle of civilization!
❤
Please tell that to the biblical ones that think they were somehow first man... 🤦
Props to your saying truth ❤️❤️
There are tons of classes in traditional West African, Congolese, etc dance and music, so just find some in your town
Kora. An amazing instrument played by a true artist. The story telling through such a beautiful sound. God/Allah bless my beautiful brothers and sisters for keeping their tradition alive. ❤️👌👍✌️
Africa is not my mother land but this is still absolutely beautiful. The music, the people and the souls.

I was hunting for some folk music to find, ended up here.
No regrets at all...feels like home.
Cheers from Brazil!
Here in Romania we have a deep rooted folklore, traditions, music and rituals but nothing feels as close and familiar as some of the traditional African songs and voices sound. Is not even a specific part of Africa, either is Western or Southern...it's something in the tone of the voice, in the instrument used, in the scales or language, like all the human history is projected o in the back of your head and all the grief and the struggle and the nature and wilderness until the present times are revealed to you as a reminder of what you've become in hundreds and thousands of years. The songs might mean nothing relevant, or the lyrics, not even care, is the package that sends you back in time and pulls you back to your office chair like you would've time traveled even for 5 minutes.
You feel that way because you are human... The common language of nature that we live in is still understood by you. You are human and you are still in tune with the essence of nature. This essence transcends race, distance or time, this essence binds the fabric of our existence and consciousness together. I have a feeling that you likely will be an environment-conscious being, one of those who believe in clean unpolluted, air, land and water... You're human, a good human.
@@segunonanuga Agreed. It's primal at every level. The sound of nature and the sounds within human beings, like heart beat.
cozmin that was one of the best thinngs i have ever read mate
I am an African that loves Romanian music, especially the Romani Gypsy sounds. I feel a connection when I hear Gypsy music.
5 minutes travel not worth it. Peace 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
Precious voice... lovely instruments... I even love the material of the clothes the musicians are wearing...You all look beautiful and please continue creating such angelical, full of unique rhythms music... It is adorable !!! Greetings from the Dominican Republic!
I accidentally stumbled across this while searching for African songs and dance. Wow! I just learned something new about the Kora instrument. I'm now a new fan of Sona Jobareth and can hardly wait to see her perform live. After checking the website, I found that she's performing at the Arden Gild, in Delaware, April 5th, 2024. I'm buying our tickets now just in case it get sold out. I've never heard of the Arden Gild in Delaware, but I will find it, even though it's a 2 hour ride from where I live in mid-Maryland.
you will have a blast, have fun.
Me too, the first note I heard from that guitar. I was mesmerized. They are incredible

This music is so beautiful. Just discovered it. What a treasure.
True that. I love this woman
Beautiful, graceful and so talented. So much more talented than modern pop stars. No need for her to have her body hanging out of her clothes
Music is an universal language… listening from Canada…. Excellent…

It is legit physically impossible to sit still to this music. Im not even much of a dancer but cant help myself from grooving to this. Love it!

the universal language of music. The true voice and speaking from an African Drum!!
Francamente está difícil para mim desapegar desses africsnos são muitos bons em suas culturas
I listen to this almost everyday as I work. That drummer ain't playing no games! And the entire band completes each other like magic! Every instrument is heard individually. And they all collectively speak one language in a magical and naturally creative harmony!
Yes!!! I listen to this so often! It’s healing and calls me home
Whats the name of the drum is he beating with his fist?
Right on
That wrist movement in there huh... like he loosened the bolts and greased them

I just saw Sona interview on 60 Minutes in the USA and her music and the Kora. At first I was thinking of Ravi Shankar but this is different sound and her voice is great. Such beautiful, peaceful music for these times. I’m sure her Star will rise even more now.
Glad you were excited and exposed to her talent. Europe have been enjoying the traditional talented African music for great time. Type Kora on you tube and you will discover another world of story tellers. 👍✌️

What an amazing piece of music, listening to it in 2023, and what an amazing drummer, so in tune and leading at the same time! From my layman's ears!
West African Music is the mother of American Music, and it's fascinating that you feel like you can hear Country, Bluegrass and Jazz in its infancy here, as that is essentially exactly what you're hearing.
Very true indeed.

As a person who has had the opportunity to hang out extensively with jalis (griots) in The Gambia, I am delighted to see a woman performing and popularizing this wonderful instrument and West African music. Women jalis (jalimussolu) are usually singers and don't play kora. It is wonderful to see a woman as such a master of the kora. Her singing style is not traditional. The traditional woman's style is much more hard-edged.
