I remember as a 10 yr old, back in the 70s, I had been training my Norwegian Elkhound for 2 yrs. in 4-H and they had "sub-novice", on leash. She was great in the obedience ring, I was getting near perfect scores but I had to move to off leash, novice. I was struggling off leash, if she saw a "game animal....squirrel", she was gone even if I was on the other end of the leash. Remember, I was 10. When I was 18, I was just under 5' and weighted 85 lbs so you can imagine how hard it was to hold the leash if she went after a squirrel.
The breaking point was her tearing off and running right in front a car. Some how, she went right underneath and didn't get anything but a few bruises. 😮
At that point, my dad talked to his hunting buddies. One had hounds, came over with a S. Collar and she wore the collar for about a month. After that, we went to the park where I trained regularly. He sat on a bench nearby with the remote. I went through her on leash work, took the leash off and did a 30 ft recall. I called her, she looked around, got up and bolted. I hollered for her to halt which was a command she understood very well, gave it again and she got a zap. She yelped, looked at me and hightailed her butt back. She never took off again. She wore the collar for another couple of weeks just so she wouldn't figure out where the zap came from.
I ended up taking her to Utility but because we had the slower process of extra classes in 4-H, she got old and was struggling with the jumps. It took a bit to get her to bring the dumbbell back to me in Open class😊
Shocking her got her attention, showed her that even though I was a kid, she needed to listen to me. My dad wasn't the boss. It was a 1 time thing and it was also a tool to save her life. Because I trained he every day even if it was just for 15 min., I at least feel it was justified. Husky breeds are nomadic and she never the yard after that. Even if the gate didn't latch. We had an amazing bond and she was an awesome dog.
Now I train German Shepherds and have for 30 years. When I got my first gsd, I bought some training DVDs from you. I wanted better focus than what I was used to getting. ❤❤❤

😊❤ love this information I have a Australian Cattle mix dog she's just turned 28 and I remember when she was about 10 months we were staying at Motel 6 she's still a puppy and I think she was well under a year maybe 10 months or definitely not over 10 months and I took her walking I said let's go over here we walking walking and we got to reach out beyond the parking lot and I said and I'm walking and as soon as I start to walk on this grass and it looked okay with a little but not too long I mean we walked on the areas like that before she just sat sits down and won't do anything and I took her her leash a little bit and I was almost fell I was little bit hesitant and you know I look back at her she still sitting down and I think my how did you know this and I was just touching a good experience and so needless to say we've grown closer through the years and I'm just so blessed to have a dog that I didn't know anything about dog training really just little bits here and there and I'm grateful for this the L Berg where you can learn more and I said that wrong but anyway I dogs amaze me and I love this

I had the same experience as Michael Ellis had. When i discoverd clicker training back in the 80s, i was hooked, line ans sinker. Not ever do we have to be rude to our dogs again. Well real life doesn't go that way, you need some means to teach your dog proper impulse control. Every thing else, conditioning, exercising, all that good stuff, do it, by any means, but know it for what it is: not much more than circus tricks. It's nice to know it, but good behaviour comes from impulse control, that's all there is to it.

I got a 108 days old puppy, Brazilian breed Bull Boxer, working dog for guard and protection. I play plenty with her. I've been teaching her the sit, down, come, retrieve, heel, and she's doing very well, a few minutes a day only, being kind to her.
I already bought an e-collar to help on her training, but the more I learn about dog training, and now I must thank many great channels here on youtube, including yours, the less I feel the need to use the e-collar. Indeed, I guess and also hope, that it won't be necessary since my puppy loves being with me, follows me everywhere, 10 meters thin leash always on ( I live in a 5000 square meters property ) and puppy's stuff aside, she behaves very well!
I have had 2 german shepherd couples, 1 belgian shepherd (not malinois) and many other breeds, and experience with dogs work better than any e-collar.
I have learned that it is very easy for the dog to get confused about the e-collar stimulation. I might in the future train her to come to me when far away, using it for communication exclusively, thanks to what I've learned from you.
    God bless ya.

Bull Boxer is a breed also known as "Dogue Brasileiro" having in it's origin in 1978, from the American Bull Terrier and the Boxer. The result is a great family dog with high drive for hunting and has been bred for guard and protection with lots of success. Very stable temperament, great dog!

Your making a mistake. The first 6 months of the dogs life should be spent developing a relationship with your dog - not teaching it behaviors. If you have a relationship you can easily teach behaviors after the dog is done teething. Anyone who tries to tell you or any other dog owner to use a rem ote collar on a young dog is not a dog trainer - they are a fool. We have an excellent online course on how to build a relationship with your dog - you need it.

      @@efrawley55 howdy.
I appreciate your response, but either I was not clear enough, or you did not understand.
Yes I bought the e-collar, but I did not use it, and will not use it before I have a complete obedient dog, which certainly will take a long time. I may not use it at all. I would use only for communication with my dog, using the tone or vibration, to recall my dog when far away.
I am working everyday, playing, playing playing, and very kindly luring her to the obedience (maybe "obedience" is not the word for today's stage) of the basic commands and she does it happily, she's doing great. I wish you could see it. She doesn't even sense it is a trainning session, because it is a playtime session. I would never forcefully try to teach her behaviors, or use the collar when she's a puppy. She's doing a great job, and I am learning a lot from many great channels like this.
I thank you for your concern and advice.
I've had dogs my whole life, and never had problems with them exactly because I do develop relationship with my dogs. This is the first dog I am training it myself. And man, what a great experience it has been! I am studying a lot to do it the right way.
I spend 2 to 3 hours a day playing with her, almost everyday.
I am watching all the videos you guys have in here, and I have not done anything different from what you guys are showing us. You are a great resource , very rich content, and I totally agree with the principles you all teach us!
      Thanks again
      God bless you

@@efrawley55 Ed, do you believe I should not be teaching, even through luring using food rewards, the sit, down, come, retrieve, to my puppy by now?
I guess I am confused now.
I've read everything you wrote over and over, as well as what I had written, and I don't know what's wrong, since there are tons of videos here that teaches exactly what I am doing and how I am dealing with my Puppy.

I am not confused any longer.
I've watched many videos of you with Michael and other trainers, training puppies, the same way as I am doing.
I would love to buy your online courses though, as you suggested, but I am from outside the USA and have no international credit card.
Anyway, my puppy is growing very confident, enjoying very much all the time we spend together, and it is a lot o time. Great dog, very special, fast learner, and joyful puppy.
Thanks anyway for your help and concern.

Personally i think remote collars should be available only through a trainer or licensed in some way. I know 2 different people who have gotten them for their dogs and both of their dogs ended up injured from human error. It makes me so sad for the dogs when the people don't educate themselves on the tools that they are putting on their dogs.

We once had a dog that would run across the street. Every time the gate was open. Wasn't me that did this with our dog. It was anyone that believed they had control over Dexter and that he would never run across the street. Sure enough you didn't listen to me, and he was hit by a car. Thankfully he survived $1,000 later. I decided to have one of my friends who was a dog trainer help me with Dexter. He was trained on an e-collar. It was only four or five sessions with e-color training that he knew the behavior we were asking of him. Not to rush out the gate. Every time he saw the remote or the collar he went into submission mode. Never had to use the e-color again.

Way, way too many people and trainers use these so-called tools and ruin any possibility of trust. Such a misunderstanding of dogs and their abilities. It is really a shortcoming of people's inability to communicate with dogs
