Case Study: Blue Jeans & Bloody Tears (a Eurovision AI SONG)

- In May 2019, Tel Aviv hosted the 64th Eurovision song contest for the 4th time. As all of Europe (together with Israel and Australia) waited for this year’s oh-so-glamorous and famously kitschy song contest, a group of artists, musicians and programmers have asked themselves is there a special DNA for a Eurovision song? What makes it a hit or a flop? What makes it memorable? And What makes it a winner? We decided to explore human creativity through technological innovation by creating an Artificial Intelligence Eurovision song that celebrates this melodramatic & campy song competition.
The project team fed hundreds of Eurovision songs - melodies and lyrics - into a neuron network. Then, algorithms produced thousands of new tunes and lines of verse, from which a few musical units - a chorus, a verse and a c-part were carefully selected and “welded” into a song. The result - a Eurovision song that comprised entirely of material written and composed by Artificial Intelligence. Titled "Blue Jeans & Bloody Tears", the song is a hilarious, weird and catchy duet on disillusioned love between man and machine. For the “man” role we casted none other than legendary singer Izhar Cohen - Israel's first Eurovision winner (1978) and to musically produce it we reached out to Avshalom Ariel - who co-produced Israel’s most recent Eurovision win (“Toy”, 2018).
Within hours and without any paid promotion the video reached dozens of global and local media outlets celebrating our song; From podcasts and radio stations playing it, to TV stations, magazines and newspapers loving it - or loving to hate it. Reddit users debated their favorite line in countless threads, RUclipsrs covered the song, fans wrote down the chords progression and most of all people analyze the song lyrics looking for hidden meanings. Not only were the accolades tremendos, the song surpassed official Eurovision entries from countries like
Austria, Albania, Belarus, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Georgia, Hungry, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, and the the United Kingdom making us unilaterally declare our song as the true winner of the 2019 competition. Robots 1, Humans 0.

But they are not. It tells a story of a couple struggling as they reach the end of their relationship and how their world's are breaking down from the change, but it's necessary. The lyrics show how painful being in a dysfunctional relationship can be and how leaving, even a bad relationship, can produce just as much turmoil.

A lot of people (like me) hears some Bowie in it. Apart from the occasional voice likeness, Bowie also wrote the song "Blue Jean", but the title for his song "Fall dog bombs the moon" also could have been generated by an AI.

I have to admit some disappointment at the song having to be welded together. I, perhaps foolishly, hoped that the song had been the algorithm's final attempt at creating one after a few runs through the training. Having to select and stitch the best parts together sounds like human interference to me.
That said, I'm off to listen to it un-ironically now. Thanks for the joy!

Don't worry about it, so like this doesn't understand the meaning behind the words, all it does is try and produce something that resembles the training data. They waded through thousands of songs produced, and chose this one as the best...

probably not because the amount of human interference that this song had actually meant this one song being "generated" took them 2 months! (or at least according to bloomberg) Apparently this AI generated thousands of melodies and lyrics which were then listened to and selected judging by the best parts of each sample.

This method is influenced dunning kruger effect, the best eurovision song is the best song based at songs that those sending the songs to judges knew that existed, so its biased towards their musical knowledge, but even if it werent, it would be biased towards human creativity.
A solution to that extreme problem, would be to create one AI that create random audio files from scratch without seed, and humans give a score between 0 and 100 to songs based at how good the song is.

Now I’m curious on what the robot would make of different bands/artists with obscure lyrics like TØP or Lemon Demon
is there a paper describing the methodology? The video says thousands of lyrics were generated, then hand-curated and welded together. Exactly how much of this was AI and how much was good old-fashioned human artistic ability? I would be impressed if the AI made chords and melodies and lyrics and all that other music stuff up entirely by itself. Given that we know the structure of songs (chorus, bridge, etc.) and basic chords and melodies, we can build language models for the different parts of the songs with some kind of parameter sharing to ensure consistency across portions of the song, and blah blah (interpolate here using AI :). The hand curation should be unnecessary.
After reding the descriptions of both videos, I've concluded that
1. All lyrics were created by the A.I but the coherent parts were welded together
2. The melody was fully generated by the A.I
