I believe the handmade book can be used as a sketchbook but the primary function is for collecting goshuin. These are seals or stamps that you can collect at temples and shrines after paying a small fee. Some places will place the seal right into the pages of the book while others may do it on a piece of paper and you can affix it into the book after.
Thank you Helen! And yes you're absolutely right :-) My mom was really keen on doing Shikoku junrei while we were there but alas we couldn't take enough time off for it. I'm keeping this book now for my next family visit in Japan.
