As an American punk rock kid from Socal.........I had Singles 45's and Under at 13. HAHA Cool For Cats was released on the DAY I WAS BORN.........Having said all that, to my shame, I didn't know JOOLS was even in the band until 2020............27 years after I got that old caseate tape. This is one of the great bands of all time.....................
There have been some ageist comments on here, but for me it reflects the change in music over time. They've been performing this for decades, rightly so as it's a guaranteed hit, and this slightly slower tempo and increased keyboard improv reflects where they are now and allows Jools even more leeway than the original. I think this is a great partner to the original track, well worth the listen and the broadcast. It wasn't a performance of the original - you can't recreate the past - but a fantastic new iteration of the song.
I heard squeeze play this live this December and that was more to the original I equally like this verson Specially as it has 3 original members of squeeze Compared to the actual line up that has two
I love Gilson - first saw him 41 years ago...oh how fast the years fly by... I wonder what happened to all those other people who watched Squeeze with me at Salford University: 30th October 1982...
Absolutely love this. Chris's voice is great and so easy to listen to. The original is a classic but I really like the somewhat slower pace of this rendition.
Met Chris difford. In Liverpool after his free gig that he did..a couple of years ago .it went down a storm...great stories and songs...very interesting to talk to...also check out his autobiography...it's just great..
Where does the time go ??? The music that Squeeze alone produced is better then any of the nonsense that passes for pop and alternative in the modern era.
Is it just me or does later-day Jools have a later-day Peter O'Toole thing going on? By the way they sound great; Chris, Gilson, and JH are the ultimate pros and I'm the same-age codger as Difford so quite pleased to be here, thank you.
I see Gilson, Jools and Gifford but, where’s Tilbrook. If them three can work it out........ seems a bit silly to me. Actually, taking a guess, you can see what might have happened here. Years ago, a TV program tried to bring them back together for a one off gig. Tilbrook and Gifford were in, but Holland wasn’t so keen. With the pandemic, somebody has obviously had a little think and wanted to do it,... on his show. You can imagine how that phone call ended. Such a shame. We obviously don’t know what goes on behind the scenes, it’s tough on the fans mostly. I still think they’d fill a massive arena as a one off.
Okay........SO. This song was released on my BIRTHDAY, ONE YEAR BEFORE I EXISTED............ As a PUNK ROCK KID FROM BERKELEY.............I said "OKAY"..... The orginal of this track has the flavor of an ELO quasi-Disco MASTERPIECE...........................Having said all that TOSH.........This FEELS LIKE ELP COVERING SQUEEZE.........and that, one of the GREATEST BANDS OF ALL TIME...............The Sqeeze kids should be in the RnRHOF............But they snubbed LINK FUCKING WRAY, the dude who invented FUZZ GUITAR AND THE POWER CHORD............SSSSSSSSOO.................Ask that kid JOOLS, him have an in.
They’re also in the UP THE JUNCTION video. In fact, both videos were filmed the same day, at the same place-Tittenhurst Park, which was once John Lennon (and also Ringo’s) home and studio.

@Warpedsmac do you have to reinforce your opinion by replying to every negative comment? We get it, you don't like it. Now move on! It's a live version done 40+ years later by Chris Difford, its not meant to sound exactly the same as the squeeze version! I'm not a massive fan of old bands doing live music, but here I think it's fine, I heard much worse from younger musicians. The live version on Chris Evans show I liked too. Well worth a listen!
As a huge Jools and Squeeze fan, I can't tell you how much this made a lovely, lovely end to a shitty 2020.
yes i agree.
Can’t believe I didn’t see this at NY ...oh well solves the problem of what to watch on catch-up tonight 😊
Such a shame Holland and Tilbrook can’t work it out. What a waste, and it’s only us that suffer.

Juliet Armstrong .... I totally agree.....a great rendition of a classic....
Very well put. We can always go back and watch the original video and the TOTP clips. It’s great to see the lads still going strong.

Quite right! The weird and cringey option would've been trying to jump around like they were still 20. This was much better
Great to see Jools back playing a squeeze track
And Gilson Lavis! I thought he gave up drumming for painting, but I guess he still plays.
@@Doommaster1994 He's been in Jools' band almost since he left Squeeze!
Is it really 41 years since this classic graced the charts! 1979,great year for music! Yearn for that time again🎧🎶😒
Not just music either, slower pace, no road rage to mention, bbc made good content without PC.
@@glennoc8585 Glenn, same thing here in Australia...we were very fortunate to be alive and the right age at that time....
Let's not overlook Gilson Lavis on drums...that's 3 of 5 from the original album.
And Greg Wallace on trombone...
Yes. Any idea if Jools and Glenn are cool with each other again?
I love Gilson - first saw him 41 years ago...oh how fast the years fly by...

and Gilson on drums damn near a Squeeze reunion
Would have loved to see Gilson just push that tempo a bit though.....
They are back touring, I saw them at sunshine festival last night.
Amazing! He’s still got the voice too
I mean it's just talking

It's nice to see them playing together again - the middle-aged version - must bring back so many good memories for them
Wow! Saw Squeeze in the 80s in Toronto a couple of times. And loving this. Wonderful rendition.
Jool's is really enjoying this, enjoying seeing his old teammate still has it.
Always loved this song and Chris's gruff singing voice.I still treasure the namesake album.
Is Chris a cockney?
I love how everyone looks like they're having so much fun!
They are!! They’ve been missing performing live in lockdown for a year now!
They will have been. They're all best buds, it will have been quite a moment for Jools, Gilson and Chris. And Dave too!
@@ellenthayer369 In usual times, i.e non-covid you can add yourself to the Guestlist via BBC website; they are picked at random to us mere mortals.
A bright spot in what wasn't a very good programme that year.. the past few Hootenannys haven't been very good. But this was awesome. 👍🏻
Will always be a huge fan of this song but loved the aggression of the original which is lost with that tempo/arragement
Brilliant. An underrated classic.

He's just the loveliest bloke isn't he
Great song....and as a Londoner I LOVE hearing that accent ;0)
Don't know how it's taken me 5 months to find this but I'm bloody glad I did.
I absolutely love how Chris sounds here! His voice really has a charm!

All Londoners . Know the lyrics . Such a good song .3 members of the original squeeze brilliant
You cannot get cooler for cats than this
I love the clapping man 💕
The Vocals still sound great
Now if we could just take this on the road with Glenn, it’d be a dream come true for me!
The did this together on Chris Evans show. It's here on RUclips 🥳
No matter who plays with Joules always knows the song So well! 😉😄
Chris’ voice simply has not aged. Amazing. 👏👏👏
It's even better now :)
Now that’s a middle eight ! 🥳
Thought she was never on her own, not always!
Lovely, well done guys, have a happy new year...
chris still has it
Go Chris !!! Wazoooooom! Amazeballs! Well done!!!! xx
Chris looks so proud of his baby😊
where are the two girls from the video they were fantastic who were they?
Chris and joold have aged well if he wasn't grey her look much the same as when the original bid was made.
Only jools ego needs some work 😛
Genius song! In and out of Wandsworth. South London gal. Uk
Opened my first ever Prosecco bottle that night. Still have the cork that almost punctured a hole in the ceiling.
Shame it's a recorded show recorded much earlier than the broadcast date 😅
But gutted I went out NYE and missed this.
Don't worry, it wasn't broadcast live that night 😉
It never has been broadcast live 😂
Paul Merson - very talented
Chris is a very cool cat indeed.

Musical indifferences is what jools quoted.
"Indifferences"!! Typical Jools Holland "humour"...
so clever, so cool, such a fine, fine song. great rendition, too.
The backup singers were great, though not quite as, um, energetic as in the original video 🙂
Yeh, hard to compete with Kim Cattrall@@michaelbarry5933
One of my favourite pop songs without the wind instruments though.
Just seen this live at the Albert Hall!!!
Almost the full band!
This is excellent!
Long live squeeze
0:38 I wanna be the guy with Tambourine. How do I get that gig?
Yeah, I always loved that tambo break when pogoing to this in 1980
he usually plays sax!!
I'll take the pineapple gig at 1:20
I think he’s a trumpet player but it’s hilarious that he’s stood in front of a music stand and playing tambourine.
@@DavidHafnium No wonder he's got a nasty little rash
Who was the flamboyant tambourine player on keys with the understated hat?
Gilson nows looks like Porridge actor Peter Vaughan.
Great song and great performance but the backing singers are slightly flat in places.
Mint this 👏🏻👏🏻
I little bit slower and a little bit tamer but still one of my favourites.
Play at 1.25x speed!
Is that original Squeeze drummer Gilson Lavis playing? Looks like him.
Yes
I think I brought this on yellow vinyl
Put a great big Fire of London on all the vitality of the original
Shame they couldn’t get the two original girls back as well
They are probably great grandparents now 😅 probably still fit though, compared to us lot in the comments 🤣

Ray Charles on Tambourine.
Why am I thinking of skin tight, satin weave, long pants?
Since when was a pineapple an instrument? wtf?
Ehh okay but it needs Glen
Top song...but way too slow 🐌
Agreed, not only is it too slow, the tempo shifts throughout the song.
It just doesn't look right with bow ties... Just sayin'...
Seriously where are they performing in a senior citizen home
Was that necessary to say?
Yes, they're certainly older, but for me it's the slower tempo which is the problem....
Nice rendition by the residents of the retirement home during their talent day for family and staff.
Well put! The tempo does not work for me and it shifts throughout the piece.
