3D Printed Explosive Rocket Testing | Feat D&S Creations

  • 3D printing ordnance is nothing new here at Ordnance Lab. We made 3D printed claymores a while back which were a big success. D&S Creations helped us achieve a new level of 3D printed when they reached out to us with their rocket project. They had some prototypes that were really impressive, and needed us to help them get to them to go boom. That's sort of our thing so how could we refuse?
Steve returned to the ranch to test out both shape charges, featured in our last video, and 3D printed rocket improvements. These are all prototypes he made over the course of several months and the idea to test them for functionality. Also to see if a 3D printed explosive shaped charge concept is feasible with this design. These are very much in the early stages of development so we were not expecting magic to happen. How well did they work out? Well, you will needed to watch the video to find out!

This video took forever to make and edit. The weather was just awful for almost the entire week. The rain turned the range into a giant mud pit. Walking anywhere would cake your shoes into giant mud clogs. The cold did not help either.
Fortunately, Steve and Jake maintained solid motivation to get the rockets made and videos filmed. Steve is hard at work with the mk 3 variant of the rockets now that fresh data on what works and what does not is collected from our testing.

Have you though to add a small section of metal tubing into the wire guide on the rockets to keep them on the wire instead of sawing through and flying off in random directions?

It's easier to use a recoilless system as a shoulder fired munition. Easier to have calculated ballistics and interchangeable war heads. Rockets favor best when you up the scale past 120mm or larger. So... Rocket favor mounted platforms, Hydra, hailstorm, and tornado rockets... They also do best of soft ignition moving platforms like aircraft, think of the old HVAR rockets

Better late than never! This video took a while as I had a ton of videos to work through. We launched 21 rockets and ran almost 5 cameras, so it ate up a ton of space on my jump drive. Steve and I compiled a great deal of data from these tests to work on an improved rocket design. Soon, the final project will be complete and we can move onto world domination. NBD

suspend the motor on the front..make like a split yoke design to hold it in the middle on the nose and a wedge under the nozzle with grooves running to the back of the rocket to make the thrust gas bypass the actuall body ...add stabilising X-shape winglets on the back of the rocket atleast as far as the main body lenght...also the grooves that allow the thrust gas to travel from the front of the rocket to the back can be slightly twisted so it adds some spin stabilization...if you make few of rockets where the trailing winglets also have a twist to them..each instance more and more you should be able to dial the twist rate and make it compliment the thrust grooves twist rate, using some high speed footage in like 5 rockets..while i havent seen this design being used anywhere and considering that diverting the gasses around the rocket to the back of it will result in some thrust loss and the pressure it will create in the front of the launcher will also impact exit speed this should work..would work even better if 4 small thrusters are used in an angled diverging thrust nose cone assembly - thats if you can reliably activate them in the same time. if you want more ideas id love to share and help develop them..if you really get down to work you can even print them in vase mode xD

The "undesireable flight path" from the second to last shot on the durable target was actually quite clean - Very little spiraling, looked as if all the fins had deployed properly on the way out, and it had a smooth loft, just so much it went over the intended target. Has D&S tried running these through a software like OpenFOAM to test aerodynamic stability? It could lend some handy clues and reduce the number of physical iterations required to get repeatable results.

personal advice would be to simplify the rockets. While cool the folding fin designs require alot more precision in opening then traditional fixed fin designs.
Perhaps try a mortar style rocket that way it seats well in the barrel, if youre worried about not producing enough drag for stabilization then use thicker fins or bend the edges. Also try using a aluminum lining for the inside of your launch tube. This will add rigidity, protect from open flame, and absorb heat.

Instead of shipping several truckloads of anti tank weapons that can get stolen and used by anyone, just ship a few 3d printers and a bunch of c4. sure, someone can use the c4, but not everyone will be able to put together a functioning anti tank weapon out of a small amount of it and a bunch of 3d printer filament. If all it ever becomes is how not to build a rocket, I'm totally fine with it. For some reason rocket fails make me chuckle because I'm an idiot and don't understand the frustration to understand how they function...but I know they aren't supposed to do that! Lol great video everyone. See ya next time!

This was actually some serious comedy for me! Some of those rockets literally did what they want and some decided they had their own minds.😂😂😂😂

09:25 is my favorite. It made me think of The Right Stuff, where they showed the endless series of launch failures, some more comical than others. And then you immediately followed this up with pretty much the same reference. Keep up the good work, someday you'll get these things to behave.

Reminds me of the Werner Von Braun quote: "I was aiming for the stars, but sometimes I hit London"

Of all the complaints people might make, I wonder how many will be mad you used a Z tank as a target.
So how do you fix the wire chewing through the plastic hanger, use a metal pipe segment as a liner?
