Man, I loved Back Office Radio. I wish they hadn't cancelled it. It's also a great document of the changes Howard made to bring on the Marci Turk era of the show.
Great interview and moreover great questions. this is my take on Howard's change ("evolution"): I feel like two things rocked Howard's world in rapid succession: Artie's downfall & Robin's cancer. And both things had such a massive impact on the on-air product. I think going through two such crazy, overwhelming events changed the way Howard viewed the show, and made the evolution (at least in his mind) a necessary thing. The show was so much about the back-office, and the day to day drama of the staff. Howard's show, the Wrap-Up Show, everything on 101, HowardTV, Howard 100 News, it was constant. It's like Howard hit a point where he felt that the show had become too real, too serious, and in Artie's case, too dangerous. He seems to have created a clean break in 2013, ditched a ton of staff (which was callous & should've been done with way more class & consideration), and said, "let's just be an entertaining radio show, minus the reality show taking place in the office." The news goes, the TV goes, the studio becomes more intimate, the guests get bigger, the interviews get longer, on & on. Ultimately I liked the old show better, but considering how traumatic it was almost losing Artie AND Robin in a 2-year span, I look at Howard, and how he must've viewed those events, and I kinda get where he's coming from. But, again, in terms of the best radio, nothing, NOTHING, to my mind, will ever touch 2006-2009.
No, he simply went fully-saturated into a politically-correct hard-core Leftism SJW position, boot-licking pro-Celebrity, AGT judge, etc... Politics/Money/Power/Cancel Culture/etc......simple as that.
I think it was different than that. Go back and listen to The History of Howard Stern from start to finish. You will realize the evolution was always happening. It was a different show every decade. I think he was a guy who would lay in front of a truck to get famous. He would say and do anything. The bigger he got, the less "out there" he was. Many people attribute it to his age, but except to the extent that his daughters became adults, that isn't it. He got what he came for. He got the fame. He got the money. He really didn't want to be that guy in the first place. On the History of Howard Stern, you can almost hear him cringe over all the things he did to get attention, like cutting people off during interviews to make jokes. I also think he came to hate the kind of fans that came with it. They aren't the kind of fans to compliment your work. If you have half a billion dollars and you are considered A-list from radio, why deal with all of that? He already got everything he wanted.
"His bat, his ball, his game." Tim on Howard. =Howard-circling-the-bases-all-these-years as well. Howard's about work ethic, though yeah the talent's there - Howard was born for this. .
This is all very interesting coming from a former stern fan. If anyones interested look up "the complete artie lange addiction saga" on piratebay or any torrent site its 650mb / 12 hours of stern shows in mp3 format all dedicated to artie lange and his crazy shenanigans. And it starts from the beginning of his heroin use on the show to the very end
Howard enabled Artie and his addiction for ratings, a despicable human being. Someone who cared just a little bit would have sent him to rehab as a condition of employment. then it is strictly up to Artie to do the right thing.
Did I hear that right that they told Artie he was being let go and that's the night he tried to kill himself?? I never heard that before and Artie certainly never brought that up before..
The way he told the story here, it sounded like it all happened the same day. I remember that all happening in Dec. 2009/ January 2010. I think Artie being let go & the stabbing (suicide attempt) was within a few weeks of each other. Artie claims he was weening himself off heroin & had a night where he wanted to try getting high by losing blood & losing a little blood would make him feel light-headed/ euphoric (like heroin makes you feel) Artie then said he hit an artery or stabbed himself too many times & his Mom randomly came over. Talk about how fucked up heroin can make you feel & what feelings it can make you crave
They left out that piece of info all these years because they knew the viewers would blame Howard for Artie's attempt and he wouldn't be able to take that.
Rik Curry probably not, but I haven’t heard Artie speak much about, and I don’t trust his book to be fact. I don’t discount it played some factor. After all, Artie knew he was drowning and he loses a very lucrative job.

Artie's talent and wit came from him being on drugs. The fact that you people didn't know it at the time astounds me. You guys used him until his drug use became a problem outside of the show. You and Howard should be ashamed of yourselves. But having no character or conscience it's like looking for remorse of a murderer following a conviction.
