Is that…possible?? I would love to see them live!! I have seen most of their videos on RUclips many times, and it blows me away every time. Its so beautiful.
The real genius behind Voctave is the founder and sole arranger, Jamey Ray (the second gentleman from the far left, singing tenor). He creates ALL of their arrangements (up to 11 parts) and he writes each part specifically for THAT actual singer. He knows what each singer is capable of doing and he makes the very most of their individual talents. Simply brilliant!!
Welcome to the world of Voctave! You will never stop being amazed by this wonderful acappella group! The middle man on the left side, Jamey Ray, is the one who arranges all Voctave work!!! You can check " Disney Showstoppers Medley ", " Disney Fly Medley" and other from Disney, you can check " The Great Movie Medley" or " The Prince of Egypt Medley", total masterpieces!!! Always looking for your reactions! All the love from Lebanon🇱🇧🇱🇧!!
I've seen a couple of reaction videos where the host exclaims "why did you not tell me before?!", or words to that effect. Let us not lament the opportunity costs of being late to the party; it's still a good party!
First of all, I’ve seen a lot of reactions to this song and other songs of theirs. Yours was one of the most educated reactions I’ve seen. You pointed out a few things I never noticed before and I’ve seen this video at least 100 times. So thank you for the great teaching reaction video. I’m subscribed to you now to hear other insights you might have about their other songs as well as other groups & singers. Second, I’ve been a Voctave fan for years now. They grew out of the Voices of Liberty, an a capella group that sings without mics, under the rotunda in the preshow area of the American Pavilion. That group has been singing at EPCOT since it opened. So for most, if not all of the Voctave members, that is their day job. Jamie pulled certain members out of that group to do some songs that he arranged and out of that grew Voctave. A few of the Voctave members have changed but most of the core group have been there from the beginning, and these are the actual video recordings of their recording sessions. Jamie is prolific in his arranging and they have recorded several albums worth of incredible songs, all a capella! They are truly the best a capella group out there but, of course, Disney would never hire amateurs or anything but the best! Many of them have music degrees, as well as solo careers singing gospel or other genres of music. If you really want to go down the rabbit hole even farther, search for Voices of Liberty at Epcot. There are literally hundreds of home videos over the past 40 years of people recording them amazed at their sound, and the colonial period costumes they all wear is awesome. The only souvenir I purchased my first time to Epcot was a cassette tape of the Voices of Liberty in 1982. That group has the same sound, although they sing primarily early American folk songs and patriotic numbers. Members of that group have all changed out over the years but they still sound incredible! Enjoy exploring other songs they’ve done in their extensive repertoire. You will not be disappointed with a single one. Every song is perfection.
10:00 I think a term that fits that would be "bell tones". A term used in brass, church, choral, basically meaning to mimic the sound of a bell. A nice attack with a quick decay, so that you can later them and hear every attack cleanly, and at the end you have a soft harmony.
I have never made it through a Voctave video/track without getting goosebumps at some point, and that says it all for me. I don’t even remember when I stumbled upon them on RUclips but it was years ago now and without fail their harmonies always give me the proper warm and full fuzzies feeling inside. Glad to see you back in action Sam and (hopefully) feeling a good deal better! ☺️
I realize you are just becoming acquainted with Voctave but I can’t wait to see how many times in future reactions when you say, “I was wrong about that!” Tiffany Coburn, the second soloist, has a very powerful and beautiful voice and “no” her voice would not be drowned out in the group. I got a good laugh out of your comment though.
I'm so glad you got to Voctave!!!!!! There are some videos of live performances. A Christian broadcast had them as guests to sing some of their Christmas songs.
A Rabbit hole you will not be able to climb out of!! :) They take pride in not using auto-tune and everyone who has seen them live say the sound exactly like their recordings/videos! "The Great Music Medley " of all John Williams movie themes is awesome and their Oh Come All Ye Faithful has an ending that will make you go "HOLY ____fill in the blank" You will love them. Also everyone is or has been in Disney's Voices of Liberty at Epcot Disney World( no microphones) and know each others voices and sounds, unbelievably well.
Enjoyed your reaction. Please keep going down the Voctave rabbit hole as they never cease to amaze me. There are many of us that watch each and every reaction to Voctave whether it be their Christmas, Disney and Broadway tunes.
"Let's call it the bong" *instant regret*, lmao. Loved the reaction, you should check more of Voctave's stuff, I'm 100% sure you'll dig most of it. And if you dig the Disney vibes you should check some of Voiceplay's stuff as well, they did a Moana Medley, Little Mermaid Medley, and even a cover of Hercules' "Go The Distance" with one of Voctave's tenors: EJ Cardona. Keep up the great job man!
Thank you for that excellent reaction... both entertaining and informative. They're pretty good, huh!?! Now that you've gotten a demonstration of their phenomenal female vocalists, you might want to give a listen to several of the men in "Disney Showstoppers". And if you like Hercules, check out their "Disney Love Medley" which features Kirstin Maldonado from Pentatonix. Literally, Voctave is a vocal orchestra which pretty much covers the entire vocal spectrum with Jamey Ray arrangements that employ intricate 7, 8, 9-part harmonies. Everything they do is special, but some of the best (in no particular order) are "Mary, Did You Know" featuring Mark Lowry who wrote the lyrics, "O Come All Ye Faithful" featuring their incredible tenor, C. J. Cardona, "This is My Wish/Let There be Peace on Earth", and "Impossible Dream"... and that barely scratches the surface. And while on the topic of a cappella, please feel free to react to any of the other three incredible groups, Pentatonix, Home Free and VoicePlay. I look forward to many more of your reactions.
So... Yes the Song is pre-recorded, Voctave have mentioned it themselves multiple times. But it is purely for mixing purposes so they can get harmonies layered from different directions and all that mixing-magic. However, They all can replicate it veryyy easily and since they also sing for Voices of Liberty, you can see it being sung live the same way, with all the dynamics, ranges and stylistic choices and the whole sound. Secondly, They do not mutli-track. Each person has their own line. Sometimes, they sing in unision but in the maxed out climaxes they tend to have their signature 4-5 octave 10 to 11-part harmony. Yea man they are bonkers. Thirdly, I don't think there is a universal term but the "bong" sound can be called arpeggios, where the notes of a chord are just played one after the other and when added with some consonantal sound u get almost pit-stacatto feeling. Fourthly, Tiffany (2nd Soloist) might sound super aspirate and someone who might get drowned out by 10 other singers. But she is the loudest in the bunch, especially when she sings high.
Just found your channel! Fantastic! I haven't finished scrolling through your videos yet. I'd love to hear you react and break down a Shoshana Bean performance, especially her live performance of Make it Rain.
You're missing out one of the most unique acapella groups, Home Free. Start with Man of Constant Sorrow, or How Great thou Art and see what you think of some serious bass...
Scott, I'm late to the party, and I'd never seen you before but appreciate your hard work. Voctave is stunning. Edit: Also, Meg isn't a princess, she's a queen. :D
I love the music of Hercules but I CAN'T give it top spot when Hunchback of Notre Dame exists Like I had to pause the video and come down here to say this before continuing; I will die on THIS hill. The music, and especially the performance, of the music in Hunchback is SUPERB Ok, back to video 😂
It is definitely pre-recorded. The layered female harmonies at the very end are individually panned, which is impossible if they're being recorded through a single microphone, as is shown in the video. However, this doesn't detract in the slightest from what are simply soul-piercing, tear-inducing harmonies of perfection. Also, as many others have stated, they are just as good live - the true mark of great performers.
i doubt it's pre recorded, the last singer gets noticeably louder the minute she leans closer to the mic. also the first soprano is too loud at moments and it wouldn't been mixed better. it's not pre recorded, they don't film their pre recorded things like this either.
Great reaction and analysis! You will want to watch their "Mary Did You Know" (ruclips.net/video/uaRpeMT1tjQ/видео.html) in which they feature the man who wrote the lyrics - Mark Lowry - and their "O Come All Ye Faithful" (ruclips.net/video/CljN1YIxHiI/видео.html)to be amazed by E.J. Cardona's lead vocals - astonishing, both of them. They have so many amazing songs.
You should also check out their cover of "Mary did you know" which they did with mark lowry, who wrote the song. Absolutely gorgeous!! ruclips.net/video/uaRpeMT1tjQ/видео.html
Sorry to inform you, Sam, but Tiffany Coburn, the 2nd soprano, does NOT sing out of the side of her mouth. I don't know where you came up with that false notion, but you are mistaken.
Don't try and fool folks into thinking this is a first time listening reaction, you're telegraphing your breaks perfectly with the breaks in the song. You've got some of the folks fooled but not everyong.
I have watched this song a couple times and some of the moments jump out as possibly retouched to sound perfect or lifted or lowered just to better blend. And I’m not familiar with them but I have sung in groups like this so I know how incredibly difficult that can be. Not impossible of course, it’s just a challenge.
Sorry, but yes, it is pre-recorded. It's simply not possible to stereo-pan three individual layered vocals when they're all being recorded through one microphone, but this is exactly what happens at the end with the female harmonies. It's not like they all went in the studio and recorded their parts separately or anything, the vocal cues are too perfect for that. It just means that they each had their own microphones for the actual recording session (which this video does not depict). Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying this is a bad thing. The exact opposite, in fact - it means that their recording engineer knew what they were doing.
Just to throw it out there, being a trained vocalist myself, and having seen them live, their sound is actually even better in person. Blew me away!
Is that…possible?? I would love to see them live!! I have seen most of their videos on RUclips many times, and it blows me away every time. Its so beautiful.

All the love from Lebanon🇱🇧🇱🇧!!
Not to mention their Christmas songs!! The Best!
If you loved Hercules, watch Voctave's Disney Love Medley, featuring Kirstin from Pentatonix.
O Come All Ye Faithful by Voctave is so beautiful!
Why have I never heard of Voctave?! Obsessed now, I got chills 😍
I've seen a couple of reaction videos where the host exclaims "why did you not tell me before?!", or words to that effect. Let us not lament the opportunity costs of being late to the party; it's still a good party!
You are so giddy and full of enjoyment with this multilayer harmonies. So adorable. And yes they are truly amazing.
You definitely should check out their Prince of Egypt medley. It gives me full body chills every time.

Agreed. I’ve always heard those described as bell tones.
I have never made it through a Voctave video/track without getting goosebumps at some point, and that says it all for me.
I don’t even remember when I stumbled upon them on RUclips but it was years ago now and without fail their harmonies always give me the proper warm and full fuzzies feeling inside.

For a Hercules fan, gotta recommend Voctave's EJ Cardona collabing w/ VoicePlay for "Go The Distance"
I realize you are just becoming acquainted with Voctave but I can’t wait to see how many times in future reactions when you say, “I was wrong about that!”
Tiffany Coburn, the second soloist, has a very powerful and beautiful voice and “no” her voice would not be drowned out in the group. I got a good laugh out of your comment though.
She shines in O Holy Night, but my favorite solo of Tiffany's is Impossible Dream.
I'm so glad you got to Voctave!!!!!!

Thank you for appreciating the bass! Most reactors get lost in the high notes.
My lord, this was just wonderful -- I simply cannot stop listening to it. Thank you, Sam, once again for giving me a new group to listen to. :D
Enjoyed your reaction. Please keep going down the Voctave rabbit hole as they never cease to amaze me. There are many of us that watch each and every reaction to Voctave whether it be their Christmas, Disney and Broadway tunes.
Voctave! ❤ thank you for your reaction! 🤗 for more especially from the first 2 female singers check out "Impossible Dream" and the one I link below
ruclips.net/video/0RojDqKIcVk/видео.html
It's gonna be "The bong" in my mind from now on! 😅🤣
PLEASE check out Voctave’s “Disney Love Medley”
Yay!! Im a bit late, but thank you for this reaction. Looooved it! As I love them.
Bell tones is usually the term for those layered chords at the end of Ariel
"Let's call it the bong" *instant regret*, lmao. Loved the reaction, you should check more of Voctave's stuff, I'm 100% sure you'll dig most of it. This is a MASTERS class on how it is done!!!

Puppy! Oh it adds to the Disney vibes ☺️
Anyway I like this, Voctave is amazing.
Next one should be the great movie melody or Mary did you know!
Voctave is my absolute favorite but VoicePlay and Home Free are also very great.
Never heard of them before, but looove the descant style harmonies. Thanks for your intelligent insight as always!!
Gotta love Voctave

Your reaction was just delightful. Interesting, informing, engaging, really extremely well done. Thanks!!
“From bass to … alien.” Best description of Voctave ever.
Thanks for this fun reaction video!!!
Trust me they sound even better live. There is no autotune. They sing with Voices of Liberty at Epcot in Disney World for their 'day jobs'.
Just found your channel! Fantastic! I haven't finished scrolling through your videos yet. I'd love to hear you react and break down a Shoshana Bean performance, especially her live performance of Make it Rain.
It’s definitely prerecorded. When the contralto goes for that last Ab, you can hear the looping.
But...but...Hunchback of Notre Dame! How can that not be the best Disney movie for songs? Hellfire is the greatest villain song ever written! Awwww. 😔
It's a cascading waterfall sound! :)
You're missing out one of the most unique acapella groups, Home Free. Start with Man of Constant Sorrow, or How Great thou Art and see what you think of some serious bass...
Scott, I'm late to the party, and I'd never seen you before but appreciate your hard work. Voctave is stunning.

I love the music of Hercules but I CAN'T give it top spot when Hunchback of Notre Dame exists
Like I had to pause the video and come down here to say this before continuing; I will die on THIS hill. The music, and especially the performance, of the music in Hunchback is SUPERB
Ok, back to video 😂
"This note... ALIEN!" :-D
love them
DON'T SLEEP ON THE LOWS! preach it my brethren lol

Yeah this was definitely pretty recorded. But they can do them live too. They have some live things posted
