  • Hi everyone! Here's a little video based on so many of your questions, about how I build the base for the paper clay mask. This masks theme is a rat. I hope this helps you wrap your head around making a paper mache/paper clay mask and how you can conceptualize your pieces.

Ever since I saw your rabbit mask sculpting video,I was absolutely taken. It gave me inspiration to actually try sculpting myself, though with our current situation,it was hard for me to convince my parents to lend me some toilet paper for the paper clay ;-; So I kind of put this project off for months, until I decided to make a gypsum mold of my face from some old stash I found in the basement.I thought I could use it as a base. But it broke to pieces thanks to my clumsiness ;v; Then I decided to buy myself online a mannequin head to sculpt on it,and well.... It turned out smaller than on the pictures. I was really disappointed, and close to giving up completely, and then I found this video. It's like the inspiration that flooded over me those many months ago suddenly hit me with a new force.
I am also honestly so relieved to see there's a more "simpler" way to make the base for the mask than what I made up. Maybe It'll turn out better than the gypsum disaster I created.
I also have a little question. I know you said there's a lot of pattern making videos online, but the ones that turn up when I Google it look very intimidating. Do you perhaps have any recommendations for tutorials on mask pattern making?

    • @inktherabbit1414
      @inktherabbit1414  3 года назад +1

      Hi Zuky!
Pattern making is daunting. It really is. But the basis of making patterns is making shapes. The hardest of which is a curve. My best recommendation to learn pattern making, is to use tin foil and masking tape. Sculpt your full shape, cover in masking tape. Sketch each individual piece onto the shape. And see how those pieces fall. You can then take that masking tape top off, and cut it apart to make a flat pattern piece. Seeing how curves need darts to snip apart. It's a little tricky to start but it's a good way to visualize your pieces and what you need to make certain shapes

Also don't give up! Art and making is always a learning experience, but nothing you try is wasted! It's just a lesson to try something else!

This is great! You gave a very comprehensive tutorial with the appropriate amount of explanation that kept me engaged. I have been watching a slew of really good videos on mask making but this has been my favorite, so far. Thank you for sharing this. I love the form and will be trying this as my first foray into the artform 🙂

I look forward to more videos from you. I like the things you sculpt and I love the simplicity
Other channels make things feel sorta like an impossible task because they have all these fancy tools or use all these different things which add up in price and it kinda makes you feel like “maybe I shouldn’t attempt this because I don’t have all those things so mine probably won’t come out the same” or “I don’t have the money for ‘this and that’ right now so I just won’t make it” or “where do you even find/buy that stuff???”
I love the simplicity of the things you use
I grew up in a family with very little money so I never really got to use/create with all the extra fancy stuff that other kids around me got to
As a result I started using cheap things around the house or things I could find like newspaper and cardboard
Of course what I made as a child wasn’t all too great but it was simply a not-well-off child trying to make the things they could only dream of having, with what little they had access to
The things I can create now have definitely improved and people tend to be shocked at what amazing things can be made with so little and a touch of creativity and hard work
I admire when people can see the beauty in, and create with, simple everyday/easy to find things

Thank you so much for your comment! Creativity is for everyone. And there is no limitations on imagination. I use what's at hand, because in alot of ways I prefer the challenge! The tools are great when you can get them.
I think you're exactly right. Make something amazing out of something common and people take notice!! So don't ever stop challenging yourself, and keep creating! I know I will!
Glad to have a fellow creator here with me to reinvent the world ❤️

Oooh, I've been wanting to make more masks but this is the most creative and simplier way to make those!! Due resin being huge work (especially for noobs like me) and expensive also, I've just had to use random different techniques.
But this seems even better, and you'll get good use on those boxes too.
Really like it, thank you for the tutorial! ❤️

i agree that cardboard is wasted alot but it is not the best for mask making if is sealed from potential wet, breathing on cardboard over time makes it damp, wet cardboard may cause lethal black mold so i suggest using a card board base and sealing it tightly away from breath, this was amazing tho

I tried both ways. foam is the way to go for sure. i used a couple strips of upholstery foam in the forehead and top to hold it up and make it way more comfortable. the paper clay was ok, but its a bit rough,
