APRS is probably my most favorite mode in amateur radio. It's so versatile in that you can connect all sort of devices and digital information along with the APRS message.
A problem I find sometimes is that many digipeaters are RX only. If that's the case where you are you'll never get a message back. I set my digipeater up to be bidirectional. Otherwise APRS just turns into a tracking system. That's not as much fun I think...
Hi Hayden, great video; it’s very cool we can use APRS here in VK land. I’ve just started looking for a good dual band radio I can take with me in the car as I travel most places with repeater coverage. This is very cool to know we use these tools as Sat Phone are proving to be unreliable. Be safe David
Having the same issue here while using a VGC VR-N76. Messages send from the radio and are received on my phone, but when I reply from the phone, the messages never arrive to my HT.
@@lovedfriend2020 I did watch the whole video, I was confirming that the only way for the text to reach the cell phone is if the phone was opted in the system to receive aprs messages.
No, if a friend has a cell sign and sends you a APRS SMS to your cellphone, you CAN answer him/her, but it seems this service won't send from the cellphone back to the radio
I did a test and subscribed my number in the Australian format and it said you are opted in... Then I tried to opt out with the same copied text format and it says invalid format... any idea why this would do that?
How do you have the knowledge of a 300 year-old HAM elmer, and still look 18 years old? Not fair, good Sir, not fair! Also, this a pretty obscure, yet incredibly useful topic!!!

Here in my area of the USA. I use a old Android phone running the APRSdroid app. A Baofeng UV5R and a amazon APRS audio cable.

I had similar issue receiving SMS on my radio. I found that you need to send out a normal APRS beacon first so the network knows where to find you.

I Have both HTs Yeasu FT5D and a Kenwood D75,
Does anyone know if this works with a VGC VN-76 radio? When I try to send a message there is no “To:” option to type SMS into
Nice. I didn't think that this worked in Australia, but it's good to know that it does.
...ah... the old Nokia texting method, good times! Haha
What a throwback!
I couldn't make it out very well, but can someone message your radio from the website?
Since the phone to radio messaging isn't working.
Hmm. Are aliases case sensitive?
I think they are
I've only noticed that you have to CAP the word SMS. It can't be lower case.
So the only way to text other cell phones is for the other user to be opted in for the aprs sms service.
It sounds like you didn't watch the FULL video. As you can see, he can send it from his HT to the cellphone but not the cellphone to the HT.

How for the people who have no call sign yet?
In case of emergency
How people can send to me?
I cant send but i can legally receive isnt it?

I noticed this too actually. It did work with the 04 number format however - I think
@@HamRadioDX Ah yes you are correct, thanks. :P
