Put on a good set of headphones, turn the volume up to the point that his vibrato vocals hurt your ears on the high notes, then turn it down a notch...best way to listen to this song.
I saw Willie when he was in Sydney Australia this year - I'm a big fan now!!! I'm trying to learn this song with a Roscoe Holcomb banjo tab. It ain't easy....
+Joseph Torres For us mortals it means hours if practice and as much jamming as you can get. After which you get to appreciate the abnormal brilliance of Mr Willie Watson.
matthew peterson I wanted to make SURE I was learning the same style he’s using for this song so I played the song at half speed, and that’s where you can really see the thumb jump..... and at half speed he’s STILL playing it faster than I can. One mystery to me as well is the tapping sound of his fingers on the drum of the banjo. I’m wondering if that comes with speed because when I play clawhammer my fingers never hit the drum like that
Among the best current renditions... but, there was only ONE who owns it, from the backwater of Appalachia in Daisy, Kentucky - and ya'll know that icon of that "high lonesome sound". Roscoe Holcomb, lived a hardscrabble life and played the music that came from it.
Hills of Mexico by Roscoe Holcomb is the version he's based this on. Ramblin' Jack's version of Diamond Joe is great though, so people should check that out too.
I reckon about the only connection between the 2 songs, is that Jack just kinda borrowed a few of the lyrics from the other song. Apart from that, theres really no other similarities.
Hello from a Mexican 🇲🇽🇺🇸🔥

I wish Willie Watson and Shakey Graves would do a song together.
Nah. Shakey's folk is way different to Willie's.
If anything Willie needs to perform with Casper Jones or Lost Dog Street Band

matthew peterson that damn double thumbing. I got the pattern down in about a day but playing it at speed is a bitch

Demaiiss!
Listen to Diamond Joe by Ramblin' Jack Elliott, this is an adaptation... I think I like Willie's better though.
Hills of Mexico by Roscoe Holcomb is the version he's based this on. Ramblin' Jack's version of Diamond Joe is great though, so people should check that out too.
Mitchell Wilson Thanks! I realize Ramblin Jack's is an adaptation of Roscoe's song, haha sorry about that.

THE MEXICAN ARE THE ORIGINAL COWBOY AND THE GRINGO STILLING LIKE ALWAYS
Imagine thinking your race invented cow raising, or gun-slinging, or singing.
True
His voice is weird, like a singer on a speeded up record.
nice banjo playing, but could do without the voice.
Uhh...no. Boy sounds like Roscoe Holcomb did when he was young.
