- Yashwant Sinha started out in government as a bureaucrat and rose to become India’s finance minister and then foreign minister. He recounts this long, eventful journey in autobiography, Relentless, which was published recently. Sinha sat down with Abhinandan Sekhri of Newslaundry to talk about his book, his life and work.
Abhinandan asks Sinha whether, as has always been speculated, the BJP was indeed divided between the “Atal camp” and the “Advani camp” during his time. “Yes,” he replies. “They were two different personalities enjoying jointly the top position in the BJP and it’s quite natural for chamchas to choose either this or that.”
Asked whether it is a new phenomenon in India that the media and the government seem like one entity, Sinha says, “The biggest damage that is being done today by the media is with respect to Kashmir. There is so much hatred among the people, especially of the valley, because of what is dished out every evening on our TV channels or what is written in our print media.”
He adds, “We have alienated the people of Kashmir more than anytime before.”
What does the former minister make of how India’s institutions are functioning today? “Institutions of democracy like the Election Commission, the Enforcement Directorate and even the Supreme Court have been compromised,” he complains.
So, if even the courts are comprised, Abhinandan asks, what should the ordinary Indian do? “When Mrs Indira Gandhi imposed the Emergency in this country, was it the courts or the Supreme Court that was fighting? No, they all fell in line.” he says. “Ultimately, in a democracy, it’s the people who will have to undo the imbalance and I have great faith in the people of this country.”

This where Advani had not been a politician, I has in some form have agreed that this is one of the reason he could not become what Vajpayee has become, based on the moral grounds. History may not forgive him for his Rath Yatra, being 90s kid, I remember all the riots, atleast he has acknowledged his mistakes.
When Raja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession, it included Foreign Affairs. By that logic Foreign Affairs consisting of signing agreement with a foreign country, deciding whom to grant citizenship, etc. should have been domiciled with government of India. Is it not Article 35A an abuse of this agreement? Also if the Supreme Court decided to hear the petition regarding Article 35A, the petitioner would have ordered through the court, all the documents listing the names of people who have been granted permanent residences during the last 70 years. What if the list reveals that the Kashmiri government had given preference to a specific religion, will not violate Article 14 which requires equal treatment of all religions? Worse, the Abdullahs
and Muftis granted residency permits including Adar cards to over 98,000 Rohingya Muslim refugees while Hindu refugees from Pakistan Occupied Kashmir still suffer in refugee camps without any relief for the last 70 years.
Mr sinha is a very good statesman the kind that is almost extinct . He is a PM material ! 👍

Well attempts to amend 370 could have been done through consensus of the people of J and K. Afterall it is not the only state with a special status. Some agreement although difficult could have been reached.

It is only now the middle class is getting a taste of ambiguity on all fronts. The poor class have been dealing with it for long. I am hopeful as Mr Sinha rightly pointed out, as time this too shall pass.
As the title of the video says, we have indeed alienated the people of Kashmir. The very fact that we did nothing when 5,00,000 Kashmiri Pandits were forced to flee their homes proves this point.
What fact? Where did you get this data. The pandit population was under 1.5 lac and yet you mention 5 lac.

If at that time Advani ji had believed in Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ji's decision of sacking Narendra Modi as Gujarat CM, probably he won't have been PM in waiting forever and must have been the PM himself. Sad for L.K. Advani he didn't have the foresight like Atal ji back then, where Atal was thinking about the future of India which could have been beneficial for Advani as well, while Advani himself was just thinking about the future of BJP. Advani was more of a party man than Atal, and Atal being more of country man than Advani.
As someone brand new to the political space, I want to say this interview has been quite educational with regards to current and past political history.
And I respect Mr. Sinha in being one of the few in BJP to speak the truth about Kashmir and what we've done to them

According to the accession document, there was no delineation between domestic administration and defence & foreign policy. Mr Sinha should know this basic truth and realise that the Article 370 and 35 was introduced later during the drafting of the constitution. Therefore, this myth that Maharaja Hari Singh wanted autonomy shouldn't be presented as fact.

Believe what you want and say what you want. We judge these days by how people act and what they achieve. Where did Mr Sinha act to do anything that he is talking about? History teaches us one lesson; those who are not strong are ruled by the strong. India is a prime example. It had been ruled by foreigners for 800 years and the country had shrunk in these years. The main cause of foreigners to rule over India was because of Mir Zafar and Jaichand's of India. Mr Sinha and Mr Sekhri for many reasons remind me of those traitors.

As for economy, it is silly to talk of lack of demand without understanding the jam in the monetary pipeline. You will not get investment going because government can't generate revenue out of air, it can only come from private players, debt or realigning spending.

Mr sinha is absolutely confused about article 35a. Special protection to certain areas and complete protection to J&K cannot be compared. We are not facing militancy in Maharshtra or Himachal. If there is no movement of people in J&K, how do u expect the people to people contact. Amending 370 and 35a was absolutely necessary and it cant be compared with other states.
Naga accord is not final and there is no provision of flag or constitution and discussion of shared sovereignty does not make it final.

We have only alienated the ruling class and families of Kashmir and their feudalism! Now the Panchayats and the common people are economically empowered , the development and honesty would return to administrative levels. Seeing the changes denied to the Kashmiris all this while, the people of Kashmir would rejoice and thank the Modi Government! The Kashmiris have alienated themselves by perpetrating a campaign of disassociation. This kind of territorial adjustment is not possible. Art. 370 was of greater use to the GOI than to the state of J&K .
Art. 3 ( is it 4 ) of the Constitution of J&K stated quite clearly that the State as it was during the reign of Raja Hari Singh is an integral part of India. And so the ' integration ' of J&K with India was never an issue. Art. 370 was never a problem.
In any case , Art. 370 has not been ' abrogated ' ; it has only been ' deoperationalized ' . Even Mohan Bhagwat said as much in his Dussehra address.
