Firstly you can't say "a myth" like you can't judge whether it was myth or not because no one knows about it, basically it was the immediate cause of revolt, the British introduced a new Enfield rifle and it was believed that this new rifle the cartilage we use in it was greeced with the fat of pig and cow,and since it was all against the religion of muslim and Hindu sepoys, it hurt their sentiments and they rose in an open revolt

He was the one who devised a policy named "Doctrine of Lapse" which declared that if an Indian ruler died without a biological male heir ( real son ) then his kingdom would 'lapse' that is, become a part of British territory. Some kingdoms like Sambalpur, Satara, Udaipur, Nagpur and Jhansi we're annexed through this policy. U can find it in NCERT chapter 2 page 19
