I just wanted to congratulate you for braving the elements in Canadian North. Amazing spirit and ideas. I also appreciate the improved video production of your videos...Really nice to watch too.
Living in my RV for 6 winters in Alberta it took a few before I figured out that piling leaves around the base made a 100% difference in keeping the underneath from freezing. Now that winter is already here I would suggest piling snow all around the base. You'll have way better R value and less energy usage to heat. You won't believe the difference it will make. It makes a ton of difference in keeping the interior warm also. Happy camping! 😃
I was raised with wood and we always had a grate in there to hold up the wood and ashes fell through the grate. They were the small ash with no wasted wood. We never shoveled out and red coals. They were in the grate. Good luck
It's when you are facing the problem and you have no other option that you realise what you can, and you can't do. Big is the problem, fast will have to be the reaction!!! Living the off-grid, 1st year you learn, and the next ones you must do everything so you live off grid became easier! Felicidades!
Love the channel and really love that filter! Always good to see people who are setting up, using and confirming it's quality. Thank you for that presentation.
It’s not often we experience temperatures like that up here in the North. I would say once every couple years we will have a lil stint of cold 🥶 in the -40’s. I hope things are getting easier for you
@awsabeandogrescue thanks! We experienced -1 ° C yesterday and felt pretty warm lol it's been good and it was just a cold front passing by! Thanks for watching!
When we were in our trailer during the winter, we put tar paper on inside and outside of windows, then plastic over it on the outside and reflectix bubble material on the insides. The reflecxtix really holds the heat.
You guys are tough as nails. Ther is not one doubt in my mind you will fufill your goals respect from a life long northerner. So happy to be along for the ride God Bless
Very impressed with your whole setup. Wow some extreme temperatures living in Angola and now in -41°C. Can't wait to see you building your cabin. I love my good weather in South Africa. I guess one can adjust to different situations. Bravo to you guys and best of luck. Every time you download a video I will be there to support you and your wonderful family. Take care.
leave the coals so it makes it easier for the next fire. you should also insulate the windows on the outside to keep moisture from building up in the middle and causing leaks in your trailers .
Just add wood to the hot coals. If you have hard wood put that in at night and turn the damper down so it burns slower and hopefully it will make it all night.
Told you, the window film would work. Is your fridge totally not working? If its just weak, check if the condenser on back or bottom is clean. The coals dont burn up cause they`re not getting enough air. I usually crack the latch, that creates a draft to burn almost everything in few mins.
Thank you for the tip! It's working better than I expected. My fridge started working again after a couple of days. I think it might have built up some ice on the outside due to extreme cold temps. Thanks for watching! All the best!
We had the same issue with smoke billowing out when we opened the stove door in our little cabin. The room was to air tight, so we opened the window a small amount when we put in more wood. Never had that problem again. Hope this helps.
I always take them chunks out but will leave the smaller embers. The dryer the wood, the less chunks you'll have. Hardwood with more moisture will leave the most chunks.
Ya I have an inverter generator 3250 watts I think dual fuel gas/propane I got it from Costco $600 works good so far. The cold is cruel but the clear air and sunshine that comes with makes life awesome. I would definitely have starlink for emergencies communications maybe a satellite phone but they are real expensive and only do phone but the Starlink can do it all. You folks have done well since your prep for winter was so new to the bush so to say. You really need to set up your solar for winter. Cheers
Yes, we have starlink, and it works great. Thank you for the kind words. Yes, I definitely have to set up my solar pannels. Gas for the generator adds up pretty quick! Thanks for watching. All the best!
@@OffGridWithGinaThi I was thinking King Canada has inexpensive Inverter generators and from what I have seen nobody has partnered with them on the internet maybe they would be interested. Good luck
hi there. something i do when i try to fix stuff and that is to buy multiple items off the same stuff. like say i need to change a lamp or a stopper or some other things, then i buy 2 or 3 off those things even if i only need to buy 1 becasue i know that down the line then i would need to change it again and if i buy 2 or 3 off those item then i have them ready to go and do not need to go out and buy it and then i can buy new ones to "stock up" when i get to the store. in short, if i need to replace something then i buy 2 or 3 off those so i have a stock pile if it breaks again. and for the big chunk off coal, when i was little then we used a fireplace in our summer cabin and becasue the wood burn at diffrent rate dependent on how thick the wood is and how the wood are then we got big coal lump also but we used them like fire starter coal so we leave some in the fireplace, dont know if that will work for you but that was how we did it, for the ash then we took it out whit a little spade and for ash outside then we used a hand hold vacuum or a wet blanket. dont know if you do that also but that is some trick i do, have a great day! :)
Propane rv fridges tend to freeze in extreme cold it causes the chemicals in the system to separate. Turning the fridge upside down then back up might get it working. It's happened to me a couple of times my fridge has two vents on the wall in the winter I block off the bottom vent with some reflectix covered foam
It would be possible. However, building material prices has increased quite a bit in the past few years, and we want to use our resources towards building our home. Thanks for watching! All the best!
Your chunks are bio char, caused by eather you are cleaning too much ash out, a stove usualy likes a couple inch bed of ash or they dont burn well, ash is an insulator. The other cause can be not enough air flow late in the burn, almost hard to avoid unless you are sitting next to the stove. Keep the char, its the same thing (basicaly) people buy for their charcoal bbqs, its got alot of heat value left in the charcoal. Eather way leave 2 inches of ash or so its better for the fire brick but also your stove will hold heat longer, and burn better. Since you burn the same thing i do you likely only need to clean ash every few days/ once a week. Soft wood creats very very little ash compaired to hardwood. If you have any chimney damper open it before the stove door or crack the door open for 5 seconds before fully opening and that will mitigate most of your smoke.
25:43 wouldn’t it be the cheapest way just get a new to you fridge off facebook market place? i personally just threw the one that came in my camper out for a double door and freezer fridge im sure you can them cheaper then brand new parts id assume? just a thought, i thought id share
@cryptozen369 good idea!! This was prefilmed but it's back and working... it was the cold temps... but if the fridge does break I'll definitely be checking Facebook market. Thanks for thr comment!
When you filled your stove you didnt fill it up. In cold weather consider loading it up. When its -20 or more i pack mine full from bottom to top. You should be able to control smoke in the house with opening dampers before you open the stove door. Make sure your stove pipe is high enough so it has a good draft. Barometric pressure can cause bad draft at times and dont think there is any fix for that. Always leave a couple inches of ashes and coals in your stove! Good luck!!!
Obviously everybody loves Honda generators. But you can buy three Chinese made generators for the price of one Honda. I like the Westinghouse generators(wgen9500df) dual fuel so you can use propane or gasoline inverter electric start with a remote control so you can leave it hooked up in your generator shed and start it from inside your camper or shut it off when you go to bed .all for $1,000 with a 11 hour run time

We've been using our carpet cleaner but just looked that up and that looks so portable and cool... will need to add it to the wish list. Thank you for the suggestion!
I would get the high moisture content in your trailer under control ,all that moisture is going into your walls too and could make black mold in your walls ,very dangerous to your health. de-humidifier ? love your video's.
@mthompson5048 hi, thanks! Yeah, we've been running the dehumidifier and keeping a window cracked, and it's actually helped a lot.. I'm mildly allergic to mold, so we actually carpet clean the moisture several times a day on the windows, but since adding the plastic, there is little to no moisture... so small little things have been helping. I think once we also get the wood heat in our main trailer connected, it will help a lot because the other trailer is so dry. Anyways, thank you so much for the comment and the kindness. Take care!
I am shocked that you still had the windows bare this far into the season. All that condensation will destroy your walls. Wouldn't reflectix in between the plastic and window be better? Yes, you would loose the ability to see through but... heat! I leave the chunks of wood in to burn thoroughly. Like #333
Home Hardware Benchmark 11500w dual fuel Gen, on sale 1100cdn, The Gen is 9kw running at 6200w it's a perfect 60hrz same as mine , even with a 2kw home load I charge at 85A 4200w, really dark days I did run 70 mins of gen,8kwh discharge cos I only have 120V AC for the whole build including heat, 70 hours of Gen this season, last year was 343hrs. Solar 5kwh lows with 11.6kwpv. When a gen says 5kw that means run it 4kw 80%, at 2.5 kw it's fuel efficient. If you discharge the gen at the right watts the hrz will be 60, no surge items on the circuit it will run clean, the inverter should show hrz from the grid menu. Run your 5kw through the inverter at 48A charge it should be close to 60hrz, every gen is different may not be accurate, if its high increase the draw. Really glad to hear about the overheat, I get that now from the new electric blanket, bed is 40C I wake up cooked.
What is broke on the fridge?? Chances are that the propane just froze up. Propane does not like those cold -40 temperatures. Just a thought to look at. We live off grid and have for 9 yrs now. Our first winter we spent in a trailer. We know.. we know.. All the best! ❤
It's nice to find folks that can relate 😂. It's been a great learning experience. You might be right about the fridge, it started working again after it warmed up a bit. Thank you for watching! All the best!
@@OffGridWithGinaThiour thank goodness that was all it was. Insulation everywhere is your key. Once you get the two trailers connected, most of your issues will go away, including condensation on your windows. That’s from propane heat. It’s a moist heat. Would he just okay but you constantly have to feed the fire. You should look into coal stoves they're hotter and burn significantly longer and never have to clean the chimney

You will never be 100% self suffishent my wife and I have been living off grid for over 50 years now and were not there yet. We also raised 5 kids living this way,s the kids are all grown up now and on there own. We grow and can most of our own food but we still buy clothes gas and such . We also live in northern ontario we hit minus 40 but we were lucky not much wind chill, with wind chill we were only minus 45 so not to bad. I still curios as to what town you live close to we have not hit 50 below in years here. I am not asking you where you live just curios as to the closest town. The only place I have heard of getting close to 50 below this year was north of church hill and i no your not that far north.Ant stay warm and have a great week.
It's great to hear from someone with so much experience in off-grid living! Good for you... and true I don't think we will truly be 100% self-sufficient... just trying our best with baby steps. We don't share our location just to keep us safe but we took screenshot of the temperatures and added it to the video. Thanks for watching!
@@OffGridWithGinaThi Thats funny because I did not ask for your location just asked what town or shopping center you are closest too. Cant beleve how paranoid people are these days. And trust me Canada is huge am sure no one could find you just by saying where it is that you do shop. Am trying to get an idea why your temps are so different then mine.
@dog_guy-m6b Yeah, we are cautious because there are a lot of sick people out there, and giving our nearest town can put our family in danger because people read the comments... we work in social media management, and unfortunately, there are a lot of stalkers and weird situations. Usually, people watching don't even know this, but yeah, it does happen. So you asking for the nearest town does not make us comfortable and it's just about respecting someone if they don't feel comfortable giving their nearest town. We get several emails every week asking for our location or nearest town, and we will not disclose this information.
Ok then I have something to tell you through out your thermomter its lying to you about your tempature unless you live way north of churchill it has not gotton colder then minus 40 and in churchill it got down to minus 45 one night now if it is wind chill I can see 50 below. Now before you go on a rant about what I am saying I have one of the most accurate thermometors available it is a real silver mercury thermometor actully they out lawed them to have anymore because of its real mercury . Our temps this year coldest was minus 40.5 we live north of Timmins . I have seen wind chill temps at minus 50 but not actual temps. I also have one of those cheaper tempature gages it has never gotton colder the minus 25 I no that one is garbage. I also have a friend that lives in churchill so I no the minus 45 is right as we talk all the time. At any rate that is why I was wondering what town your close to. Also if your parahoid you better watch out for some of those locals I no for a fact they can be a little how do you say scarry. And they already no where you live. Lmao.
@dog_guy-m6b 👍👍👍 our thermometer is the weather network and we put the screenshots up showing the exact weather and wind chill... so far our neighbors and people in town have been amazing ... no complaints there 👌 the online community... that's a different story 😂

Thank you for sharing. I'll look into it. All the best!
you need a farm tractor, dont be afraid of one 50-70 years old, they are immortal. An old ford or massey is more versatile than you will ever know.
We have a Kubota B2301 it's been a life saver! Thank you for watching!
Please try and get that connection done between trailers your too priority. We are in Ontario as well. Parry Sound area. If you ever need advice, please reach out. I can send you my email
buy you a dorm fridge there pretty cheap
Keep the stove clean
Would he just okay but you constantly have to feed the fire.
You should look into coal stoves they're hotter and burn significantly longer and never have to clean the chimney
That sounds interesting. I'll look into it. All the best!

You sure seem to be busy all the just trying to maintain the status quo. So much work just to survive
I think this year will be the worst and it will get better once we have our home up and as we learn... we belive the challenges will be worth it in the end! Hopefully right? lol thanks for watching!
Buy any generator you want as long as it says HONDA on it. Trust me on this
Thank you for the tip 👍
Are you planning to build a house/Cabin ?
Yes! Starting this spring! We can't wait to start... Gina meant for us to move in this year not next... we sometimes forget we are in 2025 already. Thanks for watching and the comments! Appreciate it!
@@OffGridWithGinaThi following your adventures is quite enjoyable for me, watching you do the repairs needed is sadly becoming a lost art
Must be new here lol
To the North? Yeah, for sure, we are new... we lived mostly in the GTA... but we are having an open mind to learn a long way. Take care!
warn us next time you are going to do a 10 minute ad!!
It didn’t even feel like a ad but regardless the beautiful thing about youtube is you can skip or speed up videos…. who would have thought ehh 🙄🙄
@@nicoleferreira8966 Yes, but it was an Ad and they didn't show it as being such, it was not shown as being a PAID Promotion! I have no problems with paid promotions as long as they are declared. Many people will take their word on how great this thing is, without knowing they were paid to say it and that is just wrong. In this case integrity was lacking!!
So at 5:45 we thank Itehil for sending us the filter... when you click on the video it pops right up that it includes paid promotion... (on the left side of the video...) and at the end of the partnership which is at approximately at 11:32 we thank Itehil for partnering up with us... and we add it to the description of our videos... and plus it was something organically that we were using sharing as part of our video. But you can definitely skip that part. Partnerships allow us to continue to make content and share the journey but we only speak about products that we use and love. We did everything that showed it was a Partnership. Hope that clarifies it!
@@OffGridWithGinaThi It did not pop up and show it was a paid promotion, if it had I would not have had anything to say.
@hughroney6342 maybe it's a glitch on youtube.... because it pops up on our end and I checked with other people. Sorry about that... but thanks for watching and being here!
When wil you start building your homestead? Stay safe and stay healthy and god bless your family. Ely watching from the Phil.
Hi Ely! Thank you for the kind words. We plan to start in the spring on this year... Gina said in the video next year to move into our new build... she meant this year. We sometimes forget we are in 2025 already lol take care!
