    despairrepair....
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    The dual mass flywheel is infamous among drivers and the mention of replacing it sends shivers down the spine (especially for drivers who have used cars).
    Main reason for this is the price tag and the complexity of replacement (on almost all cars).
    In this video tutorial we'll be focusing on the symptoms and cost of a dual mass flywheel replacement.
    You'll see all the symptoms that appeared on my previuos car prior to the complete DMF breakdown.
    The price of parts and labor is also explained.
    In this case the dual mass flywheel replacement was done by a professional mechanic since this job is far beyond the DIY realm (it involves taking off the gearbox and more).
    This video should give you a hint if a dual mass flywheel problem is near and how to prepare for it.
    Hope the video helps and thanks for watching!

    for those who commented about thinking to weld the flywheel to make it kinda solid; don't do it
    your gearbox may suffer and i've heard even your crankshaft could take a hit
    the dual masses are there to take the sudden shocks and keep everything calm and smooth

    Amazing what you can learn on here thanks, I seem to have a failing DMF by the sounds of it. I'm going to adjust my linkage tomorrow and check shifter bearings but the slight push you mentioned you had to get it in and out of gear your describing sounds exactly like mine, clutch seems good to me I've done the slipping test and it still performs. I just want to get it sorted I love my van so I want it to shift dead smooth and nice

      Hi Jamie, thanks for watching and for the nice comment!
      Well, maybe if you're lucky it's not the DMF but just something with the clutch set. Sometimes the old flywheel is still good and you can get some more miles out of it.

    Ohoh bought a 07 Explorer recently. Codes gave me multiple mis fires, so I thought it was Sparkplugs, or Coils. But I also get a burning smell thru the vents, & car & engine shake a bit. I'm wondering if it's the flywheel, happens a lot to Fords!

    thank you! very useful! :) i have a 2009 opel astra and i could not figutre out why it was stalling on uphill when everything was ok and it got checked before MOT (except for transmission) The problem was not in me everyone driving my car had same problem (including mechanics on a test drive) , i released the clutch to bite point and as soon as i pressed the accelerator cas started violently shaking and stalled even if i floored the accelerator. Car also shakes when clutch is on bite point and jerks when clutch is like 3/4 to fully released. This helped me a lot :)

      Hi and thanks for watching!
      Since you've commented on this video I guess you suspect the flywheel.
      How many miles/kilometers are on the clock?
      Does the car stutter when you want to start in 1 gear?
      It could be other things besides the DMF. the clutch plate for instance. It could be a faulty engine mount etc.

    I don't understand how to the DMF would cause the gear lever to be hard to shift into any gear. Please explain

    • @DespairRepair
      @DespairRepair  Год назад

      Hi, and thanks for watching!
      In this case, the DMF caused some damage to the pressure plate and release bearing making the shifting much harder.
      We saw this when we took off the transmission.
      This is why it's always recommendable to replace the DMF on time, or even better within the recommended service interval (when it still functions normally).
      Otherwise, you have to change the whole clutch set and DMF which is the usual scenario.

      Good luck with the repair, to be honest, I've seen a couple of people do this type of conversion, not only on BMW's
      It seems possible and pretty successful, just don't know how it holds up in the long run.

    How to differentiate between engine mounts vibrations VS dmf vibrations? Thanks

    • @DespairRepair
      @DespairRepair  2 года назад +1

      Hi and thanks for watching!
      Good question and a tough one to explain in writing.
      I can only say it's a different kind of vibration accompanied by a slight clunking sound in the case of the dmf.
      With the engine mounts, it's more like a humming vibration, at least from my experience.
      Hope this helps.

    • @MailboxReviews
      @MailboxReviews Год назад

      on my case with new engine/gearbox mounts( i am not 100 sure if it is dmf as i haven't take it to mechanic)
      usually some noises on cold startup that changes/disappears when clutch is pushed slightly
      if you downshift (without proper rev matching) there would be noises and vibrations while on the bite-point
      i supposr you would get some clunking noisr when turning engine off (keep hood open and ac off and radio off and windows down) and listen carefully; the noise shouldn't appear if you killed the engine with the clutch pressed only appears when clutch released
      how many kms or miles on your car ?

    • @DespairRepair

      Hi Richard and thanks for watching!
      Well, I wouldn't recommend it (if you're serious) as that repair would be short-lived.
      Better try and find a used one although that option is also with a questionable outcome (but it is the cheapest and may serve for some time).

      @@ElJaviTuning with those kilometers it shouldn't be the DMF yet, especially if the car is treated properly.
      The sound you described sounds more like the release bearing.
      This is a cheaper and more harmless repair but nevertheless, the whole transmission has to be taken off to replace it.
      One more thing, you can replace this apart from the DMF if it's still good.
      This can seriously reduce the cost of repair.
      Hope this helps at least a little bit, if you knew all of this, sorry for the patronizing :-)

    Hey! Great video! When i put my car into first sometimes it spits the gear back at me? Could this be because of the duel flywheel? Or would it be gear oil fluid???

    • @DespairRepair
      @DespairRepair  3 года назад +1

      Hi and thanks for watching!
      The oil is certainly worth the check, it may cause this kind of problem.
      I doubt that a dual-mass flywheel problem would cause this. If the gear lever was instead tough to shift, then maybe.
      If you can, also check the cables or levers that connect the gearbox and shifter.
      Hope this helps and all the best to you.

    • @DespairRepair
      @DespairRepair  3 года назад

      Hi and thanks for watching!
      It can be but it doesn't necessarily mean it's the dual mass flywheel.
      Other things can cause this also.

  • @richardsingleton9378
    @richardsingleton9378 3 года назад

    True bruv but mine seemed ok now the car feels worse a welded dual mass would be like a single flywheel no I'm gonna pay 250 labour plus mass wheel 379 so it's mad expensive if I weld it in place at worst it will be a box of job and get one

    • @DespairRepair
      @DespairRepair  3 года назад +1

      Yeah, I know what you're talking about, been there.
      When I had the same problem and saw the prices I almost got a heart attack, especially since the car was old and didn't have much of a price on the used market.
      Do what you have to, never had experience with a welded flywheel. Please don't take this as patronizing but I would still go for the used option.
      Best of luck and I'll say again that the DMF is a pain to solve.

      Know that's a horror story but sadly it's not that uncommon.
