I just came from watching a full game review of this. Apparently, the game hates speedrunning. There are randomly generated level designs, so when you hold right, if you stop even for a second, all the enemies that were SUPPOSED to spawn spawn all at once.
Them holding forward is terrifying because of how enemies are randomly generated, they can spawn in stacks like at 7:47 because the more they run forward, the more often enemies are spawned
For those curious, the enemies and bosses have I-frames, but the players don't. That's why it seems uncertain as to whether something is actually hitting the enemy, and why you can die almost instantly.
Randomly generating levels isnt always bad, it can make for good replay value. But there has to be some structure to the randomness, you cant just have it chuck out random enemies down a hallway. Which is what these devs did.
Reminder that this game costs more than Cuphead. I don’t feel any sympathy towards the devs at all, this game is ass and only gets worse the further you go They also block anyone who gives them criticism on twitter, from what I’ve heard
It's kinda sad. Cuphead had 19 people and some money behind it to get it all done, which is why that game is so great. This game tried to do things differently, while being tarred with the brush of a low-effort copycat, despite having 1/10th of the manpower, let alone probably nowhere near the funding... and it honestly doesn't look *baaad*. You can see the attempt and the love... it just could have used, like, 2-5 more people and some more funds. The sound, the presentation between levels (even if doing its own thing with being purely linear and arcade-like in progression, and having all your powers rather than unlocking then inbetween levels), and the balance needed a bit more polish, and this would be really good.
Yeah. It turned from something that had the chance to show it's own ideas to the cuphead formula, to a project that bit off more than it could chew. Honestly, it could've worked if they didn't put a date on it yet. Let the people work on it with their passion, and it would've been good & different enough to stand by Cuphead. But now? It's just sad to watch it.
To me this game looks very bad, aside from polish there's none of the energy that makes Cuphead a memorable game. The music is mellow even though some of the animation is high energy. The artstyle took inspiration from cartoons from the 1920s and 30s, even though that doesn't match the game at all. Why? because Cuphead did so, and people can't shut up about how incredible the artstyle of that game is. Also while I do understand excusing the scale of a game based on the number of people working on it, it really shouldn't be taken into consideration when talking quality wise. If they couldn't compete with MDHR in polish they could have tried doing something else to stand out, instead of trying to do the same thing that a company with 10 to 20 times the man power and funding had to work for more than 6 years straight, delaying it multiple times. I'd understand defending it if it tried to do some new never-before-seen stuff and fell flat, but the game really just doesn't do that. I plays it safe and tries to ride off of Cuphead's popularity, but just does everything worse, at this point calling it "Crappy Cuphead" seems like a good description
Well the game cut 99 percent of its content boss animtion and entire level designs so basically watch uhyeah video on it and then realize the kick starter failed thus we got bad game
I love how the leves are randomly generated and if you try to skip them by running a ton of enemmies just stack and you take 5 hits in a second bc theres no invencibilty frames ❤
The reason the levels are the way that they are is because they are procedurally generated meaning they are pretty much random. Like imagine the Mario maker smash stage. It’s similar to that. It’s different every time you die and do the level over again.
@@AdaTheWatcher reading the backstory of the game's development and how being branded as a rip-off crippled their kickstarter funding as well as morale, i feel for the devs. doesn't make it any less true that this is a mess design and gameplay-wise tho. i hope their next game goes well
For a team of two, this is unbelievably impressive. But it also showcases the pitfalls of a two person team, where they dont have any QA, testers, or people to tell them what not to do. Impressive but flawed, if they want to fiddle with it i think they could really improve it a lot.
4:02 because it *is* random. This is common for new devs, just make some simple set pieces and have a randomizer chuck them at the player, boom level design. Except its not level design.
The level layouts are RANDOMLY GENERATED so when they say they feel like they were walking down the same hall, they technically were! God this game COULD HAVE BEEN DECENT!! They just made every wrong decision 😭😭😭
The thing is, it being like cuphead isn't a bad thing, a game being inspired by smth isn't just copying it........but they tried to be like cuphead in the WORST ways possible, and then tried to not be like cuphead in the WORST way possible.......it's like they didn't even have common sense for this
Watched a video on this yesterday, it seems the devs wanted to stop the project after the failed kickstarter but the later on some companies gave them major money so they kinda half finished it, the level generation is rng. Sad to see, wish all the cuphead "ripoff" flak on the kickstarter could have been support, game had potential
I love Team Shanghai Alice because every word is false. It’s not a “team”, because it’s 1 person. It’s not based out of Shanghai; the guy lives in Japan. And ZUN is definitely not named Alice.

12:32 Omg Jacob is so right?!?!?? To the some sound effects and the single image “cut senses”. This would be like one of those very high-quality flash games!! (but only in flash game standards)
It honestly makes sense. Player 2 not constrained by Player's 1 camera, not being able to switch weapons if you aren't standing still, using and failing to make a random level generator. It all smells of an amateur biting off more than they could chew

It's funny that people here don't realize this game has been patched to control better and that's the version Alpharad is playing right now. You can see the weapon switching being faster and the invisibility buffer actually existing now. Obviously most people aren't going to notice immediately, and the game will suffer some afterburn like No Man's Sky did, but I suppose time will tell if more fixes are coming.
