    Gary,
    I really appreciate that advice about only painting in the shade. I may have to just wait for cloudy days as I m in a boat yard in Brooklyn. A custom shed is out of my budget.
    However I may be able to stretch a large tarp btw two boats!
    I had to sell my trailer to a friend yrs ago, it was costing too much to store and I needed the access & ht that stands give me.
    all the best w your boat!

    Gary,
    Great documentation of a tough, long job. Ive got a Rhodes22 from 1981 and am planning to do similar job in '16. I will have to plan my paint job carefully since I cannot
    paint inside a garage. Just hoping for a series of cool, dry days in the Spring.

    • @dobil1
      @dobil1  8 лет назад +1

      +Lou Rosenberg]Lou, the most important thing is shade and temperature, if the sun hits the paint while you are rolling & tipping it really messes things up. I was able to get some garage space for the project( this was difficult because of the size of the boat), but it made things go really smooth. I looked into a carport that they sold at cosco ($300) as an alternative, but never had to go that route. Best of luck to you!, Gary

    Gary, what did you do for the blue waterline section? The interlux paint is supposed to be for strictly above the waterline. My catalina has the interlux bottom paint below the waterline. Then a 4" wide blue waterline section above it that is fiberglass (looks identical to yours) I want to paint the whole hull, but I'm not sure how to make the various breaks between bottom paint, waterline stripe, and the upper side of the hull. Also, did you use vinyl tape for the very thing blue line up top as well?

    • @dobil1
      @dobil1  6 лет назад +1

      I have anti fowling paint on the bottom, after painting the boat i just masked the new white paint with blue masking tape and re applied anti fowling paint to the bottom. i had the bottom professionally redone when i i bought the boat in 96. it had so many layers of anti fowling paint on it that it was breaking off in chunks. the boat yard sand blasted the bottom, epoxied it and reapplied anti fowling paint. so im not messing with it. Thanks for the reply!

    • @dobil1

      Kory, i used a vacuum to capture the dust and then properly disposed of it. Got the Bimini in Florida from a local shop in Punta Gorda many years ago. the stingy sailor has a good recommendation for a Bimini. sorry for the late reply, it has been a while since i checked activity.

    Wo Wo WOW! I just bought a Catalina 22 as my first boat to learn all of this. Yours look amazing now. Do you have a list of things you added/cost/steps.tools? The sunshade/ Engine i.e.? Is there a great forum or something I can get part of to ask questions and learn more? I am in Sydney Where are you?

    • @dobil1
      @dobil1  8 лет назад +1

      Therene, www.catalinadirect.com is a great site to get everything you need to update your boat. they make all of the parts you could need. Jamestown distributors is a good place for paint and supplies. I ordered the engine on line from a local Honda distributor. My first Honda engine lasted 18 years with very little issues, I like Honda Marine engines, they last a long time. i have added the Bimini top, stern rail, new motor mount and i bought a new trailer. I replaced all of the exterior wood with marine plastic form Catalina direct, the wood always needed re coated and was a real maintenance issue. I recovered all of the cushions myself over the winter this year. it took a little while but i now have the boat just the way i wanted it to be. If you have a swing keel model, check the Keel and pin to make sure the keel hole is not getting out of shape from wear and tear, it is also i good idea to look at the cable to make sure it is in good shape. it has been a great hobby. when i bought the boat i lived in Florida, now i live i Pittsburgh PA and sail it at a local lake just north of the city. I still trailer it to Florida once and a while to sail on the inland waters and inter coastal waterway there. Thanks for your comments.

    Nice. My catalina is pretty much in the exact same condition. Someone painted it before, and its now cracking and peeling. How crazy did you get with all the little cracks? Did you fill those in, or just sand down? will the primers and paints fill in some of the smaller stuff? I'm unsure of just how much sanding I should do. Appreciate any advice.

    • @dobil1
      @dobil1  7 лет назад +1

      Mr Markis,
      the cracks have to be grounded down and filled with resin, if you don't, they will come back . Im working on a second Catalina 22 right now, it was painted before, im going to use Aqua strip paint stripper on the whole thing. i will let you know how it goes. Aquastrip wont damage the fiberglass, it is available at home depot online.

  • @Lehmann108

    Did you roll and tip yourself or was there one person rolling and another tipping? How large an area did you roll before you tipped it? Did you fair the hull? By the way, beautiful job!

    • @dobil1
      @dobil1  7 лет назад +2

      I rolled and tipped by myself, i did one side of the hull at a time . I was doing about 3ft wide sections at a time, Starting at the front working towards the back, top to bottom with out stopping until the whole side was complete. I did sand the hull with an orbital sander using 150 grit sand paper filling in scratches with epoxy filler prior to painting. Hope this helps, Thanks for the comments!, Gary

    did you remove it from the trailer or did you just do top paint? I'm looking at doing this same project but i think i need to do bottom paint as well.

    • @dobil1
      @dobil1  8 лет назад

      +Paul Cegelis Paul, I left it on the trailer, bottom paint was ok. I removed the winch and the front support for it to give myself more room up front. When I bought the boat the bottom had so much paint on it I had to get it all removed. I had the bottom sandblasted and redone at a boat yard 15 years ago, I did not have the tools or means to do it myself at the time.it has held up really well. Good luck with your project.

  • @cekiert
    @cekiert 6 лет назад

    It looks amazing, but not sure if painting over gel coat is the proper method, they have cleaners that remove oxidation from gel coat with a buffer going off of memory I've heard of seabright I think it was called. And it really makes a hull shine as it removes the oxidized layer

    • @dobil1
      @dobil1  3 года назад

    I dont understand why anyone would need thier boat to look this perfect. I own sailboats to go places! not to look good. as long as it looks good from 30 feet away im fine. 1 coat of pricer and 1 coat of paint. and I never paint white, its glares. or black it gets hot. I normally paint the bottom black, the sides some other color and the top a light blue or gray.
