Oh, love this! I'm a huge Zelenka fan, and would love to know what he added to this. As always, Caldara is so naturally melodic and beautiful, like an Italian Telemann :)

There is nothing wrong with Bach. But I think that Caldara is warmer than Bach in the Italian way, and what better support for his music than Zelenka’s? The story is always like. Oh, this is really like Bach in this way or that way. Therefore you should really listen to this. Any of the remotest resemblances to Bach is cited as a badge of honor. It is the ultimate motivation. But having listened to all of Bach several times, I am reminded of how his cantatas can sound a little bit the same after a while. He benefits from bigger performances and better recordings in much bigger venues and endless attention and adulation and his status as a Holy Cow, He Who Should Not Be Questioned. I would rather believe that, after listening to Caldara, people should be invited to listen to Bach because he is almost as good and that makes him just such a fine performer. That is why there is absolutely nothing wrong with Bach. Reminds one in certain ways of Caldara. Go for it, Johann Sebastian! Leo Depuydt PS There is something awkward about the geography. Caldara is being performed in Sweden, on the periphery. As if they’re hiding in the bushes. Don’t want to upset anyone. Stay out of sight. What are you afraid of? Go on and set up shop in Leipzig. And post the video on RUclips.

Caldara hits the right spot. he is more contrapuntal than his local peers but still retains the clarity and simplicity that characterizes Italian Baroque. For me, Bach can get heavy on the ears if I listen to his works in succession, sort of like an excess of information entering my mind. I don't think there is any need to make comparisons between masters. However if someone has been compared to Bach that is Zelenka not Caldara. And In a good way: Z is a master of counterpoint as shown in his large scale masses. And even then, personally, his music can get exciting and less "samey" than old Johann Sebastian. Of course, I am a huge fan of JSB, but I also love finding about less known masters.

i can clearly hear the influence of Caldara in Bach, the Glorificamus te in this mass is very very similar to the Gratias of Bach's b minor Mass

The Sanctus attributed to Bach, BWV 239, is based upon the opening of the Gloria of Zelenka’s reworking of Missa Providentiae

I listened to the complete mass today. It is of incredible quality and certainly shows Caldara's mastery. The counterpoint shines here in the second "Kyrie Eleison", "Glorificamus Te", and "Domine Deus Rex Celestis" where canon and fugue is employed to solemn results. The original set of movements by Caldara are equal parts exciting and memorable.
Zelenka's additions are interesting, but not on par with the material preceding it. Don't get Me wrong, I am a fan of Z, and I can't deny his magistral ability of sacred drama; but the added Credo is rather bleak. With fresh ears, after listening to Caldara's Kyrie and Gloria, "Credo in Unum Deum" sounds like an effective continuation to the work. The dissonances at Et Incarnatus Est got me by surprise! Pretty powerful stuff. However, Crucifixus, Resurrexit and Unam Sanctam sound like standard German mass material, and missed the unique varied structure proposed by Caldara. "Amen" on the other hand, is simply spectacular. Labyrinthic harmonies flow along with the intensely chromatic subject and melodies. This is one movement that makes me praise Zelenka's vision of harmony that is ultimately superior to his contemporaries, and only Bach comes to mind on the same level of musical exploration.
Bravo for the ensemble, vocalists and performance! It must have been a challenging work to perform. The music is tightly and divinely articulated.
