We are here in New Mexico as well. Just be responsible and understand some businesses policies don't allow open or concealed carry. If we are to be law abiding, we must respect these policies even if we don't agree with them. In this case, these policies should be questioned in the Supreme court to make sure that said corporation is not superceding the Constitution which is the Law of this Land. Our strongest argument... Who is going to be there when the non law abiding criminal comes into said establishment and starts blowing people away. I, for one, would hope someone would be concealed carry and stop the massacre. By the time the police get there, it will be too late. Fact! 💯

Imagine if we trained our cops. I meet many lawyers who don’t know MD gun laws too. We spend millions of dollars installing bike lanes yet give out drivers licenses like candy to people who don’t know how to park. We need to set our priorities straight instead of using tax payer money to line the pockets of our buddies.
I think 2-4 years of schooling would suffice. It would weed out so many knuckle heads going into the academy. You’d get an entirely different pool of recruits. The 6 months of training they do now is a joke, my brother went through the academy.

As a 23 year law enforcement veteran of a major metropolitan area, I can say with confidence that most (70%+) patrol cops do not know weapons laws. What type of gun carry is legal. What type of person may carry. What constitutes a prohibited possessor or illegal firearm? I cannot even count how many times I have been called to somebody else's crime scene to unload a gun, or even to tell them what type of gun it is, because the six coppers there have no idea. Probably more than a third of cops couldn't hit a lake, firing their own weapons, even if they were standing on the bottom of it. But that is another topic. There has been shift since the mid 2000's in the type of candidate that is being recruited to work in the field of law enforcement. It's not a good shift.

I've been pulled over before (not for this reason). I'm usually calm and may crack a joke or two just to bring down any tension. That usually drops their guard as some cops are nervous about approaching cars. (We've seen those videos.) Long and short, don't give them a reason to get more testy.
If they're nervous about approaching cars it's not the right field for them. People in US own and drive cars so police are going to be interacting with a lot of people driving cars. If that makes them nervous then maybe it's not the right job for them.

Officers should know and understand their Penal Codes and Code of Criminal Procedures as much as possible. They are provided with books (and now apps) that contain all the laws and should always have that resource with them. But Gun Laws??? You HAVE to know your Gun Laws!

Bruh, I grew up in MD and didn't know open carry is legal. I always thought it was conceal carry only. 😭
As a 23 year law enforcement veteran of a major metropolitan area, I can say with confidence that most (70%+) patrol cops do not know weapons laws. What type of gun carry is legal. What type of person may carry. What constitutes a prohibited possessor or illegal firearm? I cannot even count how many times I have been called to somebody else's crime scene to unload a gun, or even to tell them what type of gun it is, because the six coppers there have no idea. Probably more than a third of cops couldn't hit a lake, firing their own weapons, even if they were standing on the bottom of it. But that is another topic. There has been shift since the mid 2000's in the type of candidate that is being recruited to work in the field of law enforcement. It's not a good shift.

I’ve driven for 20 years and have been pulled over twice. I was 23 the first time and 27 the second time. The first time he quickly told me my lights weren’t on and it was night. The second time he told me my tabs were expired and then immediately let me go. My question for you is why do you get pulled over so often?

I've been pulled over before (not for this reason). I'm usually calm and may crack a joke or two just to bring down any tension. That usually drops their guard as some cops are nervous about approaching cars. (We've seen those videos.) Long and short, don't give them a reason to get more testy.

If they're nervous about approaching cars it's not the right field for them. People in US own and drive cars so police are going to be interacting with a lot of people driving cars. If that makes them nervous then maybe it's not the right job for them.

As a law abiding citizen I’m forced to read up on laws constantly be very informed and keep my eyes open for any possible changes. Otherwise my right to protect my self and family will be taken away. I agree with you that every officer should know their gun laws backward and forward. However, for all the people who keep commenting that cops should know ALL the laws, you are living in a dream world. Do you have any idea how many laws there are? Any clue? There are thousands of laws and hundreds of new laws are added every legislative session. It's impossible. Officers should know and understand their Penal Codes and Code of Criminal Procedures as much as possible. They are provided with books (and now apps) that contain all the laws and should always have that resource with them. But Gun Laws??? You HAVE to know your Gun Laws!
