I think when people go into these books viewing the prose as a challenge to overcome in order to unearth the story, they’re set up for failure. The prose itself is a major reason to read Tolkien. It’s almost like the prose is a character in and of itself. I understand it’s not for everyone, but I would encourage potential readers or those who never finished to slow down and try to savor the writing of a man who understood language, articulation, and poetry like no one else!
It almost feel like some people don't enjoy the reading process; they just want to know the plot.
Is the prose really that difficult? I mean, I never noticed it while I was reading it, my biggest complaint was the pacing
@@IzzyZil20 I’ve seen complaints that tie the two together. I’ve noticed for myself that I tend to remember the pacing being very challenging in large sections of TT and ROTK, but every time I go back and read them, it only ends up being one or two chapters in either book that feel slower and my brain for some reason causes those few sections to overshadow much larger sections of the books as “slow” 🤷🏻♂️
@@RTH140 I think the beginning of fellowship is pretty rough. And there were large sections of two towers where I was crawling through it. But then again, I’m not the biggest Lord of the rings so that might be me
I actually just started listening to Phil Dragash's audiobook narration of Fellowship on your recommendation! I saw your audiobook video from a year ago and then downloaded it right away. I'm really enjoying it. I read the books back in highschool, so now I'm just taking it slow and enjoying my time in the world Tolkien built.

Love these books. Read them when I was 11 or so and routinely go back. Pippin is my boy. And Boromir is a character only truly understood once I’d matured into an adult. Such great stories.
100% agree about Boromir! And Pippin is of course amazing! :)
Pippin is an underrated character. His arc in Return of the King especially is so strong!
This is my favorite book of all time! The review was good with the exception of your last line "It s still worth reading, it still holds up so, so well" sounds like a bit of a back handed compliment. Would you say that about, say, The Name of the Wind?
How is that a back handed compliment? I really don't see the negativity in it.
@@allthatishere How about "It is a book well worth reading, period" (iwithout reference to the time element - i.e. still worth reading, and holds up well). Would you say Shakespeare or the Bible is still worth reading and holds up well? Would you say Chess is still worth playing and holds up well? If something is excellent, we don't need to qualify it by saying, "hey, this thing is really old but is still worth reading and holds up well." [And compared to Chess, the Bible and Shakespeare, The Lord of the Rings is not even that old]. The comment displays recency bias. (I understand that it was well intended, though).

Hmm, I think these are due for a reread. It's been over a decade now. I remember it feeling like a bit of a slog until the council of Elrond, but being fabulous after that. Maybe I don't properly appreciate the coziness. And it's a good point about the language sounding like an epic poem. I feel Tolkien's writing begs to be read aloud.
Yes, it lends itself well to reading aloud. Tolkien was a scholar of ancient languages and could recite from Beowulf and other tales at length - and apparently did so in his classes he knew and loved oral histories and ancient ways of storytelling, and capably recreated that same feel in his stories.
For this reason, if people find reading his text difficult, I think they might want to try audiobooks of the series.

I don’t usually re-read books, but LOTR is the exception. I find myself coming back to this books every other year. Feels like coming home. There’s a warmth in Tolkien’s words, a sense of clarity and confidence. It’s like comfort food for me 😂

Huge fan of the films and have a lot of nostalgia tied to the middle earth. I read the books in my native language last year, and did enjoy it. The pace was slow sometimes, especially because of the many page long descriptions of the terrain. The world is just beautiful and so well thought out. Definitly want to read it in english sometime in the future
I'm a big fan of the films as well! The books can definitely be slow, slower than I'd like but it's still such an immersive journey 😄

This one is always a tricky one... Im a huge fan of the films and have read the entire series + The Hobbit and I personally find these hard to get through. Even Jordan's WOT feels much faster paced to me. That said, I have a soft spot in my heart for these books and will likely re-read at some point in the future. But yes, the prose is 'dated'.
I'm also a big fan of the films! And I can totally understand that, the books are pretty slow at times. I feel like the journey is still well worth it, but definitely not as easy as most. WOT did a great job at taking some of what Tolkien laid down, and perfecting it in many ways while at the same time being its own thing. WOT has its flaws as well, but definitely easier to get into than LOTR

Ever since I got back into fantasy I’ve wanted to read Lord of the Rings, but haven’t gotten around to it yet. Guess I’ll have to do so sooner rather than later!
Loves the movies, and have read the books but didn’t care for them as much as the movies. I don’t think the pros is really all that difficult to get through personally I just think the pacing is really meandering for a relatively short trilogy compared to many modern fantasy works. As influential as lord of the rings is, I think a lot of the tropes it establishes and even general story and has a plot has been done better and a lot of other fantasy works. Just my opinion though, and I would never recommend against these books even if they aren’t my taste
I read a lot of Fantasy... I enjoyed The Hobbit a lot. Managed to somehow get through Fellowship and got about 1/3rd of the way through The Two Towers... I just can't do it. And my favorite book series ever is Wheel of Time. It's just way too slow...
Fair enough tolkien isn't something of a writer himself his main profession is mythos and creating these fictional histories,nor hobbit nor Lotr were his main work,it was the silmarillion and what came before
Funny. It’s reversed for me. Love LotR. I want to like wheel of time and I’ve made it to book six but I feels like work to get through each one. Except Dragon Reborn. Which I admittedly loved.

Very good. I really need to read it!
Sometimes I'd find it boring for about 100 pages in a row, but the good parts more than made up for that.

I firmly believe that if some is a fantasy fan it’s is a crime to not have at least tried to read LOTR! It’s one of the most insane and amazing stories/writing/characters and i defo need to reread it soon!
I agree! I think everyone should try to read it, the impact it's made on fantasy is monumental. I want to reread it soon as well!

i wasnt so into the movies, so why would i enjoy the books? (thats always my question and i havent had anyone answer it yet)

@@CapturedInWords ty for the honesty. i’ll probably read them anyway at some point lol, but only when my daughters old enough to read with, i assume when shes 12 or 13, so just a few more years(and also assuming shes interested).
I don't think these books should be recommended as much as they are. Most people don't really have the attention span for LotR and the prose gets too much for them. I love Tolkien's universe and have read everything from the HoME to the Silm but I think fantasy fans would do much better to watch the movies rather than read the books and have this grudge towards this series that many people I know irl have.

I read The Hobbit in order to read The Lord of the Rings and I cannot understate the fact that it was a slow... slower... slower still burn. I rated it a burned-me-out 7(or maybe 6.5). And hoping that the story is gonna pick up some pace, started reading The Fellowship of the Ring... I think that's enough? No? Well than... this book is modest enough to let the (sleeping) tortoise win while while killing the rabbit by resting on it's back. I rated it a pushed-me-into-a-grave 6(or 5.5).
The next two books would help me fall asleep and calmer for a long time, I hope.
This comment makes it sound like you did not really read the book.
I think people have lost the ability and stamina to actually read the classics. This is more in line with Austen, Dickens, or Dostoevsky than Abercrombie or GRR Martin. If you would read any of those, give it a chance.
@@captainnolan5062 I read The Hobbit about 3 months ago and the Fellowship of the ring was the last book I read. Currently I am reading Senlin Ascends(first book of the Books of Babel trilogy). This would be the 50th book of my life. I started reading 2 years ago on my new Kindle Paperwhite. I will turn 18 on 8th May and am targeting to finish Senlin Ascends before that. I have completed it about 33 percent. It is an amazing book and you may read if you actually have ever picked up a book to read. Thank you.

I am truly glad that you are reading books now (I have not yet read Senlin Ascends, but it is on my list - thanks for the recommendation). Unfortunately, you are growing up in a world that has contributed to people becoming impatient (especially our youth, like you), and has created people that do not appreciate the beautiful art of description in fiction. However, I would suggest that you at least read The Two Towers before you give up on The Lord of the Rings. Good luck with your continued reading!
I tried it, I've read the first one and DNFed the second one. These books bored me.
I started several times and always get stuck somewhere in the second book.. but after tons of content online I still have a good grasp of what's happening in the books..
Funnily enough, the silmarillion was much easier for me to read. Just smaller interconnected stories with conclusions to every story. So it didn't drag as much

I've read Fellowship and am in no hurry to read the other two. I've also read The Hobbit, and that was better, but still not amazing.

That's unfortunate. Don't think about it as a fantasy novel persay, but rather a classic work (like Dickens, Austen, or Fenmoore Cooper). Maybe that will help if you change your expectations.
